...Muckraker news There were various issues that occurred during the progressive era. Some the issues were economic and social problems. Many of the people during this time suffered and died because of these issues. This society faced issues such as poverty, greed, racism and a lot of violence. It wasn’t a big deal during this time, but when it was all over people started to realize the horrible actions that had occurred. There were multiple issues that took place during the progressive era. Some of these issues were child labor, factory conditions, and political machines. The first issue that occurred during the progressive era was child labor. Child labor was one of the most depressing issues during the progressive era. Children from various ages would work 8-hour shifts in unhealthy factories while earning barely any money. The put the children to work because they were smaller than your average adult and they could easily work in smaller spaces. They were easily controlled and they worked for less money than an adult would so of course the owners were very fond of this. What they failed to realize was that they were robbing this child from their childhood. Most children working in these factories were forced to grow up and act like an adult. They didn’t get to enjoy being young like most Americans did in this day of age. This is a very sad issue because nobody deserves to have their childhood taken from them. This didn’t end until the early 1900’s after the Great Depression...

...Andrew Crempa 3/16/75 Prior to the period of 1900-1920, Americans perceived the rapid transformations of society to be insufferable and, likewise, prognosticated instability and emerging chaos. However, by the turn of the twentieth century, these perspectives evolved into a rather optimistic view. The Progressive Era thus commenced. This movement brought both political and social innovations that invoked the desire to enact order and justice on the currently strained society. These staunch “progressivists” believed in society’s capability to advance, grow, and enhance through various reforms at the national level. These reformers, along with the federal government, proved effective in their quest for betterment of society: their efforts resulting in both successes and limitations. One of the most prominent issues dealt with the meat packing industry and the closely associated issue concerning the safety of medicines. The meat factories were the epitome of filth: dirty and soggy floors, rarely washed tables, and ill-ventilated rooms. Utterly ignorant of cleanliness and the danger of their work place to their health, workers shoveled fallen meat scraps into machines for chopping: combining despicable leftovers into the meat (Doc B). Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle revealed these atrocities and others including how employees often became victims of tuberculosis and various other illnesses (O.I.). His vivid description of the unsanitary and life-threatening conditions reached...

...active role in the lives of citizens providing assistance and help to those who are in need of it is something that is present in government on all levels. For example, one could argue that middle class tax cuts are a progressive idea, as it is providing economic relief to those who require it the most, as middle class individuals who are those who are mostly workers and individuals who are not working at the level of an industrialist. When progressivism is seen on a local level it is based out of government helping those who need it the most. Think of local governments that organize food drives or ask shoppers to donate a can of food to a food pantry. These are progressivist ideas in action as they help people to realize that the government can take direct and positive action in helping its citizens. Progressivism also helped redefine the role of American politics locally by instituting such things as secret ballots and non-partisan elections. Progressive reform began at local or city level because it was easier to implement compared to state or national reforms. Urban corruption form political machines were a major focus resulting in the reorganization of local government using the commissioner and city manager styles of management. Allen 2 Progressives redefined the role of American politics state wide also. Reform governors such as Theodore Roosevelt, Kobert Lafollete, and Woodrow Wilson all helped get reforms passed in their respective states. Also reforms first...
