...Running head: POLYGAMY Polygamy: The impact on Arab families in Israel Laura Kline Pennsylvania State University-York Dr. Darling HDFS 315Y Abstract Polygamy is a common form of marriage for Bedouin-Arabs in Israel. The unique structure of this form of marriage can create problems for wives and children. It can benefit the family members as well. There are multiple factors that can influence whether being in a polygamous family is advantageous or detrimental to those family members. The reasons behind polygamous marriage are examined as well. The marriage practice known as polygamy is viewed many different ways in different societies. In societies such as our own, polygamy is seen as a taboo that is not widely understood or accepted. In fact, in the United States polygamy is not legal and polygamous marriages are not recognized. Polygamy is a general term that refers to the two types of polygamous marriages. Polygyny refers to the marriage of one man to two or more women, which is the type of polygamous marriage this paper will cover. Polyandry refers to a rare type of marriage in which one woman marries two or more men. Some other societies view polygamy as an acceptable and sometimes necessary form of marriage. One of these societies is the Bedouin-Arabs in Israel, where polygamous marriages are common. These polygamous families are Muslim. The Islamic faith encourages men to have two or more wives if they can sufficiently support them (Al-Krenawi...

...Isis Sneed Argument for Polygamy “Polygamy has been corrupted by outside views and should be accepted as freedom of expression instead of being condemned.” If I were to go up in front of a large audience and read this aloud, it would without a doubt cause an uproar. Polygamy is a very controversial issue that deals with religion, rights, and even safety and psychological issues. Polygamy is not considered normal, especially in the westernized countries, yet some cultures do practice it and seem to be fine. People may be quick say why polygamy is bad but has anyone ever thought of why the practicing of polygamy can be good? First let’s being with what polygamy is and what all it entails. Polygamy is the practice of having more than one spouse at one time and even more specifically it can be multiple marriages, not just one husband with many wives or one wife with many husbands. It is evident that even people in the bible practices polygamy. Abraham had more than one wife, as did Jacob and King Solomon. Here in the United States those that practice polygamy are mainly Mormons to which they believe God wants his people to be fruitful and multiply. At one point in time some Mormons decided to stop the practicing of polygamy and became known as “mainstream Mormons” or members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Those that practice polygamy often live together and also include their own communities. Each community or group has a prophet and the prophet is responsible...

...The polygamy is a word that comes from Greece and if we translate it, the meaning will be “often married”. The polygamy has an interesting meaning where the marriage is done with more than just two partners as it happens at most societies. In most countries out there the polygamy is not a practice that is tolerated and the laws are usually making it illegal. This word is usually referring to the type of marriages where there are two or more spouses, but in the vast majority it will refer to two wives or more. At the same time there are also tons of cultures from all over the world that have absolutely no problem with accepting polygamy as a normal thing and this means that there are no laws to prevent men to have more than one wife or even when a woman has more than one husband. The polygamy term can create a lot of confusion, especially since people confuse it with the bigamy term. The bigamy however will only refer to have two wives, while the polygamy refers to having two or even more and they all live in the same house. Other terms that refer to this domain are polygyny – There in this situation a man will have many wives at the same time. The term polyandry refers exactly to the same thing as the polygyny, except for the fact that the wives will have at the same time more husbands. Group Marriages – Are yet another interesting term where there is one single family unit, but with many husbands and wives all at the same...

...| Introduction The term polygamy, meaning "the practice of multiple marriages", is used in related ways in social anthropology, sociobiology, and sociology. Polygamy can be defined as any form of marriage in which a person has more than one spouse. In social anthropology, polygamy is the practice of marriage to more than one spouse simultaneously. Historically, polygamy has been practiced as polygyny, meaning one man having more than one wife; or as polyandry, meaning one woman having more than one husband. In sociobiology, polygamy is used in a broad sense to mean any form of multiple mating. In a narrower sense, used by zoologists, polygamy includes a pair bond, perhaps temporary. Polygamy as stated earlier is the situation in which one man is either married to or involved in sexual relationships with a number of different women at one time (Magubane, 2003). This was the most common form of polygamy practiced by Mormons in the 19th century, and practiced today by self-identified fundamentalist offshoots (West and Jean, 2002). Polygamy existed all over Africa as an aspect of culture or religion. Plural marriages have been more common than not in the history of Africa. Many African societies saw children as a form of wealth thus the more children a family had the more powerful it was. Polygamy was and still is thought of as a part of empire building. It was only during the colonial era that plural marriage was perceived as taboo. Esther Stanford, an African...

...Dallas Nelson Rebecca Settle ENL111-302 July 14, 2014 Polygamy Is Not A Party The newest sensation to watch on television these days are two shows on TLC called “Sister Wives” and “My Five Wives.” These shows deal with the topic of polygamy and how it is supposed to benefit everyone, especially women. These families want to show the rest of the world that their way of life is healthy. In the United States, when looking for the prospect of finding a husband most women aren’t looking to share, so it’s expected that polygamy would be frowned on by most communities. However, there are still a small amount of families that chose to live as polygamists in the United States, illegal or not. Some are forced into plural marriages and some choose this life. Either way, the mental health of the wives is likely to be negatively affected as this lifestyle causes mental issues such as low self-esteem, anxiety and depression because it is an illegal, morally ambiguous, cult-like life that offers a false sense of security and jealousy. Polygamy is a federal crime and a state level crime in most states. The United States was built on Christian morals making marrying several women not only a crime but also a moral issue therefore causing a great amount of controversy amongst most citizens. In fact, up until November of 2013 in Utah where polygamy is most common, not only ways it illegal to have more than one marriage license, it was also illegal to live in a house where a...

...Polygamy in the South West Hawaii Pacific University PSCI 1400 June 13, 2008 MCP Term 4-08 Article #4 Polygamy in the South West Polygamy has been a problem in our country for over one hundred and fifty years. In 1862 the first Anti-Bigamy law in the United States, The Morrill Bill, was signed by Abraham Lincoln. Our government has since passed several laws to discourage polygamy, and yet they still battle polygamist sects to this day. I believe that our government’s main concern is not the multiple marriages, but the children affected by them. Young girls are being forced in to marriages with much older men, to have sex and bare children. Young boys are excommunicated, and thrown out of their communities to make more young girls available to older men. Women and girls are being forced to marry first cousins, half-brothers, and uncles. There have been several cases of incest and in-breeding, which has led to children being born with severe abnormalities, from physical deformities to mental retardation, and genetic diseases. They continue to bare these children regardless of warnings from physicians. Despite all the laws against polygamy and to protect children, our efforts to enforce these laws have made very little impact. These polygamist sects continue these practices in spite of arrests and heavy fines by the government. Former Fundamentalist LDS Church leader Warren Jeffs sect is recently the most notorious group in the news today. For the past several years...

...Polygamy: What is right and what is wrong? Polygamy is when a man is married to more than one woman at a time. This term is not to be confused with bigamy, where the man is married to separate women, and have separate lives, whereas polygamy the multiple families live under one roof. With shows on TV about polygamy, such as Big Love and Sister Wives, polygamy has been under the radar. There are also cases such as the YFZ Ranch that was owned by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), a Mormon “ranch” that practices polygamy, where over 400 women and children were taken from the ranch. One of the major comparisons to making polygamy legal is the legalization of gay marriage. The first article against polygamy I read was by a Canadian blogger, called clearcut blogging. I know a blog isn’t as resourceful as an actual article but I found it very interesting. This blog gave reasons for why polygamy is wrong. The blogger talked about how polygamy is not about rights: it's about the power over and control of one group by another. One of the points that the blogger made that I think is a good one is that most North American "families" in polygamous situations are on welfare or food stamps. The men in polygamous relationships cannot financially support all the women and children, and the women are generally not permitted the freedom to choose a career and work. This shows that in a modern society, polygamous marriages are not healthy or stable institutions...

...Polygamy: Deviant or Not so Much? Polygamy: Deviant or Not so Much? Jennifer L. Chadwick Grand Canyon University: Everyday Sociology June 23rd, 2012 Polygamy: Deviant or Not so Much? Polygamy is a marriage that includes more than two spouses. If a man has two or more wives, it is called polygyny. If a woman has two or more husbands, it is called polyandry. A marriage that includes multiple husbands and wives is often called a group marriage. The difference between polygamy and bigotry is that spouses in polygamist relationships generally know each other and often live together. In a polygamist relationship, only the first wife is a legal marriage and the subsequent “marriages” are spiritual but not recognized as legal unions. Bigotry is the practice of a man having multiple wives in different states that usually do not know about each other. It is more of a legal issue because only the main or first wife is eligible to receive benefits such as social security payments and pensions. Polygamy was a common practice among Mormons for many years starting around 1831, but in 1862 Congress declared it to be illegal. Many Mormons have continued the practice since then but generally stay out of the public eye and keep to themselves as to evade persecution and arrest. In 2010, TLC began to televise an American reality show titled Sister Wives. The show follows the lives of a Polygamist family who lives is Utah. The husband, Kody Brown has four...

...Stereotyping Abstract Stereotyping is a general opinion regarding traits of particular groups as a whole. In stereotyping there is no room for individuality, only assumption based on the groups traits. A common stereotype in Utah involves the Mormon religion and the assumption that anyone from Utah is Mormon. Studies indicate there are not nearly as many Mormons in Utah as most people think. When developing stereotypes, one must be able to recognize traits and characteristics of a group. Stereotypes are not permanent and do have the potential to be changed. This process does take time since they are developed through experiences and observation. Individuals are not always aware of their participation in the use of stereotypes. Many people associate individuals with them unconsciously. Stereotypes are not always negative and can often benefit social situations when used in a positive manner. Stereotyping A stereotype is a belief developed regarding people in general. These beliefs result in categorizing people based on assumptions and the beliefs do not allow for individuality. Stereotypes can be positive or negative depending on the situation. These beliefs result from consistent traits that are noticeable in a group and which are easily recognizable. Stereotypes can be changed, but this can take a great amount of time and convincing. Many people have opinions related to stereotypes without the realization...

Valid lifestyle choice B. Flexible marriage VII. Conclusion: According to IslamReligion.com (2006), Islamic marriage is a legal arrangement, not a sacrament in the Christian sense, and is secured with an agreement. Matrimony in Islam lays right and corresponding responsibility on each spouse. Children in wedlock are given legitimacy and share inheritance from their parents. There are two kinds of marriage system, which is monogamy and polygamy. The meaning of monogamy is a system of marriage where a person has only one spouse while polygamy is where a person has two spouses and above. Polygamy can be defined as two types; one is polyandry, where a woman has more than one husband, and the other one is polygyny, where a man has more than one wife. However, only polygyny is allowed and polyandry is forbidden by Islam entirely (Why Islam, n.d.). Polygamous marriage Islam has bring some impacts to the Muslims such as psychological...

...Saints. This religion is a branch off of Christianity and has some similar beliefs as other Christians but the most interesting thing about Mormons is that the men have multiple wives. They believe in polygamy and the wives call themselves “sister-wives.” At first I thought this religion was very odd. I thought that it almost sounded cult-like instead of it being a religion. The interesting thing about the followers of this religion is that they know people think it is odd. A friendly Mormon woman, Joyce Broadbent, said, “I know it seems weird to outsiders, but from my experience, sister wives usually get along very well. Oh sure, you may be closer to one than another or someone may get on your nerves occasionally, but that’s true in any family. I’ve never felt any rivalry or jealousy at all.” I found this statement very interesting. I first thought it was interesting that she notices that polygamy seems odd to outsiders. Much of the time, I believe that people may be ignorant to their beliefs and think that it is the norm and everyone else is odd or out of the loop. I thought this statement was interesting also because to think that someone has to compete for their husband’s attention with other wives is just a foreign thought to me personally. I have never really heard of polygamy until three years ago. When I first heard of it I thought it was very odd. I always thought that if anyone was to get married, it should be to only one person. But I believe that is me being ignorant...

...Sexual Revolution Evolution Intimacy is not free in the modern world. Political change, social change, systems of oppression, and globalization all contribute to the shape and to the limit of people’s intimate lives. The oppressive regulation of marriage and sexuality by states and cultures can really affect intimacy and incite sexual revolutions. In feminist studies Professor Leila Rupp’s lecture, Tickell and Peck were cited as defining globalization as a notion based on an increasingly borderless market, where market rules and competitive logics predominate. In another lecture, Rupp stated that sexual revolutions are linked to and caused by: globalization, economic forces, technology and culture. Rupp expresses that many changes in behavior and attitude have been related to these factors. Many sexual revolutions according to Rupp are caused by resistance to oppressive governmental and cultural regulation of sexuality and the diverse ways that people, both individually and collectively, resist regulation and bring about change. People are agents and resist individually and collectively the perils of oppression. Two sexual revolutions addressed were that that took place in the United States in the 1910’s and the 1960’s. Gender roles were extremely limiting and constricting especially from the perspective of many females. Females were limited to household jobs and conservative dress in addition to their overall conservative behavior. On top of women’s restrictions behaviorally...

...research methods November 25, 2014 Introduction The earliest relationships among humans were certainly those between men and women, who came together and produced children. In the earliest days, such a relationship began to be called “marriage.” In the Judeo-Christian tradition, based on the book of Genesis, marriage began in the garden of Eden when God made one woman, Eve, out of one man, Adam. Marriage has been explained differently by various cultures throughout history as to whether or not it should be monogamous or polygamous. Scholars explain this in different ways. W. Schmidt’s theory asserts that marriage began as monogamy and decayed into polygamy later on. The opposite thesis of this theory is that of J.J. Bachofen. Bachofen argued that marriage began as a random selection of a partner subsequently leading to polygamy and group marriages. From group marriages, marriage moved to monogamy. These two views show the two different poles of understanding about the origin of marriage: as either monogamous or polygamous. On the other hand, Köstenberger and Jones argue that placing too much premium on the freedom of man has led to a decay in the understanding of marriage. They state that “many hail the decline of the biblical-traditional model of marriage and the family and its replacement by new competing moralities as major progress.” This paper will focus on monogamy as the ideal example of marriage from creation. Also, the paper will make a case for monogamy, which is...

...practices can affect their manners and personalities as a whole. With habits such as polygamy and celestial marriages, the Mormon community has established such a distinctive way of living that has allowed them to emerge from other religions. Their seclusion from other cultures as well as their extreme devotion to their faith has made Mormonism come out as a job full of requirements rather than just simple spiritual theology. In the following composition, I aim to inform everything about their nuptial believes, ceremonies, and demands. With that said, I will back up my claim of why I believe the Mormon society is exceedingly strict due to their pious way of living, their expectation to raise conservative individuals, and their closure to other communities. Mormon´s earnest wish to fulfill religious obligations is an essential part of the society. Take polygamy as an example. When the doctrine was first explained back in the 1840´s by Joseph Smith, majority of the members felt repulsed by the proposal. People where then motivated by verses from the bible stated for them to follow their patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob which were told to have more than one wife. As time went by and a better explanation was given, Latter -day Saints manage to understand it as God´s will. Even though they didn’t quite understand why, they were willing to convict plural marriage because God told them to. Polygamy immediately evolved into an extremely important facet of Mormonism in the 19th century...
