...“Building a future of freedom requires love of the common good and cooperation in a spirit of subsidiarity and solidarity”- Pope Francis. This quote is one of the many ideas Pope Francis has on religious freedom. It means that the world is unable to reach religious freedom everyone must have love for the common good and cooperation to other religions. Religious freedom has been a very hard thing to accomplish but I don't think it's completely reached yet. We need to put a stop to religious discrimination. We need more than religious freedom, we need an end to religious discrimination Anti-semitic attacks put Jewish people in a lot of danger. One giant thing that has happened to Jewish people is anti-semitic attacks happening around the...

...Pope Francis I whose birthname was Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected the Pope in March, 2013. Francis is the only one to ever take over while the previous Pope was still alive. He is an advocate for the poor and marginalized, and when it comes to politics and environmental issues, he is not afraid to initiate dialogue and take action where he deems necessary. One of the most significant actions was his Encyclical, Laudato Si, that he wrote to his Bishops explaining his take on the scientific debate about climate change. Pope Francis is known to make daily headlines. In a short period of time, his methods and philosophies are bridging the gap between some of the Catholic Church policies and modern times. Jorge Mario Bergoglio is the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, and is the first Pope ever to be elected from the Americas. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 17, 1936 and was 76 years old at the time of his election. He was ordained a priest in 1969 and soon after became Argentina's superior of the society of Jesus. This is very...

...The Catholic Church Attempts Bringing Their Own Back On the Same Sex Marriage Issue Abstract The following paper will argue for the Catholic Church against those Catholics within the institution what agree with same sex marriage. In fact, a little more than 50 percent of Catholics according to a recent survey by Pew Research accept and support homosexuality and same sex marriage (Lipka, 2014). There will be four opposing arguments make by the magisterium, which is the teaching of the Catholic Church, against same sex marriage. These arguments include; the teachings which prohibit homosexual activity, teachings that need to include those that promote the dignity of the person, the good of marriage as a social institution, and their religious liberties as they exist today. Pope Francis declares that homosexuals are good people they just practice immoral acts that are not accepted within the institute of marriage (Hale, 2015). Arguments are based on the magisterium and our religious liberties. There is hope that that those Catholics in agreement of same sex marriage will return to the beliefs followed by the magisterium following the reading of this information. Introduction The Catholic Church Attempts Bringing Their Own Back On the Same Sex Marriage Issue The Scriptures are not silent within the Catholic Church (Montoya, 2000). He claims that homosexuality in the eyes of the church is treated as a violation according to Scriptures, and a major one standing out is...

...abilities from what I learned from the following four leaders. The four leaders I choose: Pope Francis, Jeff Bezos, Alexander the Great and Abraham Lincoln. I choose these four because of the style of leadership I feel they are the best in: leading by an example, being a risk taker, using strategy, and never giving up (determination). Pope Francis is very effective by setting an example. He is humble. He wants to be a Pope who for the people. He is not someone who wants fluent his position which makes him a popular Pope. He would rather drive in a FIAT 500 then a limo. (What did the leader do well ) "Francis hates any members of the clergy who sit in offices and push paper," Krames says. As a bishop in Buenos Aires, Jorge Mario Bergoglio (as he was then), would dress as a plain priest and go out at night to talk with people. "When he became pope he told one of his archbishops, 'I can't do that anymore, so you're going to do it for me.' He doesn't want a pristine church, he wants a church that's going out in the streets to find people and help them." Likewise, Francis famously chose not to move into the papal apartments but to remain in a guest suite at the Vatican, "to live in community with others," according to a Vatican representative. “[1] “The reformist Pope immediately set his sights on the Vatican’s finances, aiming to clean up a regular source of scandal. For the Pope—who took his name from the saint who devoted himself to a life of poverty—financial reform was...

...Same Sex Marriage Recently the discussion of same sex marriage has been a hot topic in both the political and religious arenas. This controversial issue has caused many citizens to take a solid stance on same sex marriages based on his or her morals, beliefs, and viewpoints. Popular reasons that citizens considered when deciding their stance are civil rights, religion, parenting, and financial matters. This paper will break down the pros and cons of each of the reasons listed and attempt to come to a conclusion of should same sex marriages be legalized in the state of Californians. Civil Rights The Constitution of the United States was written in 1776, which during that time there were no gender specifications noted pertaining to the recognition of a legal marriage. Same sex marriage debate is so large that in 1996, President Bill Clinton signed for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which clarified that marriage is between a man and woman. The main reason gay and lesbian couples are fighting hard to legalize same sex marriage is so those couples will be allowed to and benefit from the same government, financial, and legal stances as heterosexuals marriages. Several states allow partnerships or civil union for same sex couples, however, they are denied certain rights given to heterosexual couples (National Conference of State Legislatures, 2013). Because of the growing debate of same sex marriages, President Obama administration said that it would no longer defend...

ABSTRACT The main objective of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the composition and characteristics of corporate governance on the financial reporting quality of Portuguese companies. The major reference case studies on the relationship between corporate governance and the financial reporting quality are not validated by the results obtained. The results show that the board composition changes and its degree of independence do not produce any influence on the quality of the accounting information. Our study shows that although the main international guidelines relating to the rules of good governance have been followed closely by Portuguese institutions, the actual implementation of these rules did not occur. 2 1. INTRODUCTION The aim of this paper is to contribute to the study of the influence of the type of corporate governance on the financial reporting quality in countries with a tradition of continental accounting. Despite the profuse literature about this topic, adapted to Anglo-Saxon environments, its applicability to companies with different structures, specifically companies in Latin markedly based on Roman...

...Final Paper Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton were both very influential figures concerning science. They both discovered ground breaking things in the physics world. Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the general theory of relativity. This is one of the biggest parts of physics alongside with quantum mechanics. Sir Isaac Newton was an English physicist and mathematician who are commonly referred to as one of the most influential scientists of all time as well as a key figure in the scientific revolution. Newton formulated the laws of motion and the universal gravitation that dominated scientists’ view of the physical universe for over the next three centuries. He also has demonstrated that the motion of objects on the Earth and that the celestial bodies could be described by the same principles. When he was deriving Kepler’s laws of planetary motion from his mathematical description of gravity, Newton removed any of the people’s last doubts about the validity of the model of the cosmos that was heliocentric. Near the start of Albert Einstein’s career he was beginning to think that Newtonian mechanics was no longer enough to reconcile the laws of classical mechanics with the laws of the electromagnetic field. While he was doing this it led him to his special theory of relativity. Thus he realized that the principle of relativity could also be extended to the gravitational fields, and this sparked his subsequent theory of gravitation in 1916...

...For my Social Justice Paper I will be researching Abortion in the two religions Christianity and Judaism. For Christianity I selected to research the Roman Catholic branch of Christianity. Abortion is not a modern issue. It dates back to the early days of religion, where the Ancient Jews believed that God created the child in the mother, and brought it to life. The Palestinians, and later, the Greeks and Romans practiced infanticide, sacrifice and abortion. In the Roman Empire, a child had no legal status until accepted by the head of the family. The anti-abortion stance of the Catholic Church began in its early days (The Teachings of the Twelve Apostles) states "You shall not procure abortion. You shall not destroy the newborn child". Christianity...

...I chose procreation as a topic for this paper for a few reasons. First, because of complicity of the issue. Scope of this problem almost unlimited and correlates not only with modern legal and ethical general acceptable principals, but also with core issues of human existence. Second, I do believe, that understanding of origin of procreation and ability to build personal approach in this issue plays significant role for every professional in the Health Care System. Even if in real life situation some of us will never directly participate in solving such problem, still establishing firm personal position on this issue will benefited everyone who involved in running of human services. Third, I think that in the scope of course “Legal and Ethical issues in Health Care”, procreation could be a best example to justify my personal opinion on the social role of ethics and its priority over the social role of legal system. In comparing law and ethics, many people thinking about law as a sphere of clearly identified and easy to recognize points, while sphere of ethical issues for many, more-less limited to the individual stand points in terms of what is good and what is bad. However, it is an ethics established law, not law established ethics. Especially in the procreation dilemma, it turns out ethics plays a big part in all aspects of breeding, in the sense that ethics makes our choices relevant to other people. The decision to have or not to have children has a profound impact on all...

...THE ACCOUNTING REVIEW Vol. 79. No. 4 2004 pp. 967-1010 Costs of Equity and Earnings Attributes Jennifer Francis Duke University Ryan LaFond University of Wisconsin Per M. Olsson Duke University Katherine Schipper Financial Accounting Standards Board ABSTRACT: We examine the relation between the cost of equity capital and seven attributes of earnings: accrual quality, persistence, predictability, smoothness, value relevance, timeliness, and conservatism. We characterize the first four attributes as accounting-based because they are typically measured using accounting information only. We characterize the last three attributes as market-based because proxies for these constructs are typically based on relations between market data and accounting data. Based on theoretical models predicting a positive association between information quality and cost of equity, we test for and find that firms with the least favorable values of each attribute, considered individually, generally experience larger costs of equity than firms with the most favorable values. The largest cost of equity effects are observed for the accounting-based attributes, in particular, accrual quality. These findings are robust to controls for innate determinants of the earnings attributes (firm size, cash flow and sales volatility, incidence of loss, operating cycle, intangibles use/intensity, and capital intensity), as vi/ell as to alternative proxies for the cost of equity capital. ...it is the reflection of the age, which it belongs to. Literature of any age and era shows the prevalent trend of the period when it was created and connects at its best to that era. The uniqueness of the literature of Saint Kabir is that it transcends all boundaries and limitations of time and place. In spite of the fact that his literature belongs to the period of 15th century it is still relevant, remembered, quoted and discussed with passion and fervor not only among the connoisseurs of art and literature but also among common man and youth. This article is an attempt to throw light on the various dimensions of Kabir Das’s literature and how it is still effectively communicated and in turn is used for effective communication. This paper contemplates on the varied aspects of kabir’s literature. Kabir’s literature is known for elements of mysticism, spirituality, concept of love, his objectivity in imparting moral education, his attack on vices of human behavior, hypocrisy and materialistic attitude. All these aspects are dominantly reflected in his literary works and are still relevant in today’s social scenarios which are well communicated in the form of his well remembered ‘Dohas’ and poetry. Hence, it is concluded that Kabir’s literature, in spite of being so old and classical is timeless and well applicable and connected with today’s era. His ‘Dohas’ makes an integral part of our day to day communication. Hence, it can be said that, Kabir Das has communicated with...

...“Saint Giovanni Bosco” In a modern day world where we see so many people focused on themselves and motivated by accumulating wealth, power and recognition, it was a nice change to research and write my report on Saint Giovanni Bosco, better known as John or Don Bosco. As you will see from reading this paper, Saint John Bosco was an admirable and selfless individual, who dedicated a large part of his life to helping others in need. He was an Italian, Roman Catholic priest, educator and writer, but his most important role in life was his lifelong focus on the creation of betterment and education programs for poor, disadvantaged and delinquent street children. Many of these children were considered “throw aways” by society. Saint John Bosco became the champion for these forgotten children and treated them like his own. There is no doubting that he deserved to be made a Saint. He helped save the lives of thousands of young children and offered them an opportunity to live a good and meaningful life. We definitely need more people in our modern day world to follow some of the incredible acts of selflessness and charity that we have witnessed from the life of Saint John Bosco....

BASED ON SEXUAL ORIENTATION: SHOULD THE GAY COMMUNITY BE ACCEPTED IN OUR SOCIETY GLOBALLY? What is sexual orientation? According to the American Psychological Association (APA), sexual orientation is an enduring, emotional, romantic, sexual or affectional attraction to another person. Basically, Sexual orientation is about who attracts us. This attraction may lead to love hence marriage. The issue of same-sex marriage is an argument that we have heard of and have strong opinions on. We believe that homosexual couples should have the same marriage rights as heterosexual couples. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Marriage is a basic human right. You cannot tell people they cannot fall in love." While he said this in reference to the...

...WAYLAND BAPTIST UNIVERSITY THE LIFE AND INFLUENCE OF IGNATIUS LOYOLA PAPER PRESENTED TO DR. GARY MITCHELL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR RLGN5354 SCHOOL OF RELIGION BY MARK D. RIGG PLAINVIEW, TX OCTOBER 15, 2015 THE LIFE AND INFLUENCE OF IGNATIUS LOYOLA Introduction This biographical research paper will focus on the life of Ignatius of Loyola. It is the intention of this writer to deal with three major concerns regarding this post-New Testament Christian personality. First concern: to provide some background and personal history. Next, to set forth the contributions of Ignatius and the significant impact he had on the Church in general among his contemporaries, right up to the present day. Finally, the writer will reveal how the life of Ignatius relates to and has personally influenced his own. Background and personal history Iñigo Lopez de Oñaz y Loyola, whom we know as St. Ignatius, was born the youngest of thirteen children in northeastern Spain in 1491. He was raised in a noble Basque family of high Catholic piety but lax in morals. His father had several children by another woman, and his grandfather's lawless behavior led to the top two floors of the Loyola castle being demolished by order of the crown. Iñigo hardly knew his mother, Marina Saenz de Licona. As was the custom of the time, “A few days after his birth Iñigo was handed over to a wet-nurse, Maria de Garin, wife of the blacksmith living in a cottage...

...LEORNADO DA VINCI AND HIS ART [pic] His early childhood Leonardo da Vinci is usually regarded as an artistic genius who possessed great ability in art and understanding of the human physical features and natural sciences as depicted in his art. Leonardo da Vinci was also an accomplished musician and scientist. No other artist of his generation had such exceptional ability and left behind such a wealth of graphic work. He was somehow controversial and as a young man he was accused of being a homosexual (Frank Zöllner 2002 p.7). However even though most of his works were of exceptional quality he had a tendency of not finishing his works and sometimes fled due to social problems. Leonardo da Vinci was born in 15th April 1452 in the village of Tuscan in Florence (Leonardo 2002 p 3). He was the son of ser piero da Vinci, a young lawyer and Caterina. He was of noble origin form his mother’s side (Leonardo 2002 p 4). His mother bestowed upon him not only the beauty of his person but also very many other gifts that placed him high above ordinary people. It is said that he was somehow a genius and usually solved with ease whatever he put his mind to (Leonardo 2002 p 4). When he was still young he enrolled in the study of very many different things but he usually abandoned them once he had jut began to know them. One of the courses he studied was arithmetic and after a few months he had understood it so much that he used to come up with problems and difficulties which...
