Pope Francis said, “Women have much to tell us… Women are capable of seeing things in a different angle. Women can pose questions that we men cannot understand” (Quotesberry n.p.). Pope Francis understands how important women are to the Catholic Church. There are many different powerful women in the Church. Even from the beginning of life women have played an important role in the Church. This is evident in women from Eve to Mary, to the woman that lives down the street, every single one of them is essential to the Church! Mary plays a major role in the Church as the mother of God. His first miracle, the wedding at Cana, as stated previously was performed because his mother asked him too. This is seen when the bible states, “When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it’” John 2:3-5 (New American Bible). Jesus did not think it was time for him to do his first miracle, but he did it out of respect for his mother. Jesus, on his way to Calvary, stopped so Veronica could wipe his face. Jesus’ face appeared on Veronica’s cloth. This was radical during this time. Women were considered beneath men and it was very radical for Jesus to stop for a women, let alone pay attention to her. Why are they important? Saints are important because they show an example for Catholics to follow. Some women Saints show great strength in their faith in God which shows the strength of women in difficult societies. Two examples are Saint Maria Goretti and Saint Agnes of Rome. Saint Maria Goretti was born on October 16, 1890 in Corinaldo, Ancona, Italy. Saint Maria Goretti was one of six children, and when she was young her father died of malaria. She had an eighteen year old neighbor named Alexander that decided to rape her in 1902, she was twelve. She fought back saying that what he was doing was a sin and that he would go to hell for doing it. He then started choking her, and stabbed her 14 times. She stayed in the hospital for 2 days before she died. At the hospital Saint Maria Goretti forgave Alexander herself and asked God to forgive him. While in prison Alexander had a change of heart and reinvented himself. Maria was declared a Saint in 1950 by Pope Pius XII, Alexander was in the crowd.
