...From the early days of written literature, literary works have had a positive and negative effect on popular culture. Since Ralph Waldo Emerson, who has been considered profoundly wise by Americans to include Abraham Lincoln (The Independent, 1995), scholars and literary writers have had substantial influences on culture. According to C. S. Lewis (n.d.), “Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become” (Objectives for HKDSE, n.d., p. 969). Literature has been proven to sway how and what we think. It addition, some science fiction authors or popular works have increased the creative genius of some leading to advances in technology. The story of Luke Skywalker is no exception to the rule of literary influence. The instant success of the Star Wars franchise debuted in 1977 with the release of the first movie in the six movie series, numerous cartoons, comic books, and a cult following that will not go away for the foreseeable future. The story begins as a poor young farmer searches for a lost droid and ultimately evolves into the greatest well-known galactic battle of the 20th century. Lauded as the last Jedi warrior, Luke Skywalker, enlists the help of humans, droids, and aliens to wage a battle of good against evil. The evil, also known as the dark side, proves to be a formidable adversary that ultimately...

...As we can notice, paranormal power has been a more and more common topic in contemporary popular culture such as films, TVs series, especially literatures, many fiction novels and mystery books have been the holy grail of their fans and scholars. People are showing greater interest in paranormal things which include vampire, werewolf, wizard, alien, superhero, or psychic abilities like telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, and psychometry ever than before. On the other hand, according to David W. Moore’s statistic in 2001, about three in four Americans profess at least one paranormal belief, which is very unexpected for me. As far as I can see, there must be an inseparable relationship between these two phenomenon. What are the reasons behind...

...Writing a Literature Review What is a Literature Review? A literature review is a survey and discussion of the literature in a given area of study. It is a concise overview of what has been studied, argued, and established about a topic, and it is usually organized chronologically or thematically. A literature review is written in essay format. It is not an annotated bibliography, because it groups related works together and discusses trends and developments rather than focusing on one item at a time. It is not a summary; rather, it evaluates previous and current research. Purpose A literature review is written to highlight specific arguments and ideas in a field of study. By highlighting these arguments, the writer attempts to show what has been studied in the field, and also where the weaknesses, gaps, or areas needing further study are. The review should therefore also demonstrate to the reader why the writer’s research is useful, necessary, important, and valid. Audience Literature reviews can have different types of audiences, so consider why and for whom you are writing your review. For example, a lot of literature reviews are written as a chapter for a thesis or dissertation, so the audience will want to know in what way your research is important and original. Highlighting the gap in knowledge which your research aims to fill is particularly important in this instance because you need to convince the reader that there is an opening in the area of study. A literature review...

...Popular American Culture Paper Throughout this paper, the reader will get a better understanding of culture and popular culture, along with their definitions and examples of each. The reader will be told three major trends in popular American culture and their roles. Also, the reader will understand how popular American culture affects personal decision making. The reader will gain a better understanding of these three topics after absorbing the paper in its entirety. What is culture? What is popular culture? What is culture? The answer is: "Most social scientists today view culture as consisting primarily of the symbolic, ideational, and intangible aspects of human societies. The essence of a culture is not its artifacts, tools, or other tangible cultural elements but how the members of the group interpret, use, and perceive them. It is the values, symbols, interpretations, and perspectives that distinguish one people from another in modernized societies; it is not material objects and other tangible aspects of human societies. People within a culture usually interpret the meaning of symbols, artifacts, and behaviors in the same or in similar ways." (Banks, 1989) What is popular culture? The answer is: “Popular culture is the accumulated store of cultural products such as music, art, literature, fashion, dance, film, television, and radio that are consumed primarily by non-elite groups such as the working, lower, and middle class.” (Crossman, 2011) What are three major...

...Popular Literature Ayana Thomas SOC/105 May 14, 2013 Luis Rangel-Ortiz Popular Literature Culture can become a huge part of someone’s everyday life and have a great impact on their well- being. Culture can describe someone’s personality, the way they dress, talk, or the types of foods can identify someone’s culture. Popular culture is something that changes with the times. The way popular culture is today, is very different from who it may have been portrayed many years ago. This paper will not only talk about popular culture in general, but it will analyze a certain piece of work that signifies popular culture. The popular fiction novel that I choose to critique is a very well known book called To Kill a Mockingbird, published by author Harper Lee in 1960. This novel takes place in a small segregated fictional town in the south, called Maycomb, Alabama. Harper based this novel on her life experience growing up in the south as a young child and what it was like to be separated between the whites and the blacks. To Kill a Mockingbird, is about five characters, with Scout, a six year old little girl, and her brother Jem a ten year old boy, their father Atticus, who was a defense attorney for the local courts, and their neighbor Boo Radley. To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in the era of the Great Depression, and where segregation was a big thing. The book displays what it was like in the 1960’s to defend a African American person and stand up for their rights...

...The Legendary Life of Rudyard Kipling Rudyard Kipling was one of the greatest writers of all time. He was a gifted writer and a huge celebrity, and has provided us with countless writings that will continue to be enjoyed by future generations. There are two perspectives when it comes to Kipling’s canonization; those that believe based solely on his writing abilities think he should be canonized, and those who saw him as an only an outspoken political figure do not. The questions surrounding his use of a swastika show him to be a possible Nazi sympathizer and curve his support of canonization. The purpose of this research paper is to provide the insight and the facts to support the stature of his writing abilities, and to prove that on the merit of his writing alone, he is a true literary canon. Despite his political incorrectness, he should be considered a talented and remarkable author based solely on his literary creativity. Kipling was born in December of 1965 in Bombay, British India; which is now known as Mumbai, India. He was an English poet, short story writer and novelist (Wikipedia). He was born to Lockwood and Alice Kipling, who were both highly respected people in their time. Kipling was in love with India and the people that inhabited it. Some of Kipling’s earliest and fondest memories are of him and his sister Alice’s trips to the bustling fruit market with their nanny, or her telling them Indian nursery rhymes and stories before their nap in the tropical afternoon...

...Running head: WEEK THREE INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 1 Popular Literature Paper SOC/105 October 10 2012 WEEK THREE INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 2 The following paper will describe to the reader a brief overview, followed by a little bit about the author, and then explain how this type of popular fiction fits with other literature in the same genre. Comic books of yesterday and today have introduced a lot of new and interesting characters. The character that I selected to right about is the Incredible Hulk. The Incredible Hulk was introduced to the world in a comic book back in 1962. This character, Bruce Banner, was a scientist that was working with atomic weapons when an atomic bomb went off and exposed him to an enormous amount of gamma radiation. When he was exposed to the radiation, it turned him into a savage and extremely strong animal of a human being. Normally when Mr. Banner becomes enraged the Incredible Hulk is exposed and only when the Incredible Hulk calms down does he turn back into Bruce Banner. Although the Hulk's color has varied just a bit over the time that he has existed, the majority of the time he is the favorable and most popular green color. Whenever Bruce Banner turns into the Incredible Hulk, he is then capable of immense strength, minus the brains. Strong emotions such as anger, terror and grief are also triggers for...
