UNIX®/Linux® versus Mac® versus Windows®
There are several computer operating systems available on the market, and it is sometimes difficult to choose. Therefore, it is important to compare the system capabilities to make the decision easier. The three biggest players in the operating systems market are UNIX®/Linux®, Mac®, and Microsoft® Windows® with Windows® holding the largest market share (Boitor & Brătucu, 2011). These three operating systems are capable of multi-processing and have similar capabilities; however, and it is important to compare and contrast how they handle memory management, process management, file management, and security, which are critical system functions. Discussing memory management, which is a vital component in operating systems, is first.
Memory Management
Memory management refers to the way a system makes use of the computer’s RAM (Random Access Memory). Many of the operating systems in use on computer systems have positives and negatives in their use of memory attributes. “Memory management is usually divided into three areas: hardware, operating system, and application…although the distinctions are a little fuzzy. In most computer systems, all three are present to some extent, forming layers between the user's program and the actual memory hardware” (Ravenbrook Limited, 2001, p. 1).
There are several types of memory, including main memory, file system memory, and swap space (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Deployment Guide, 2012). How each of these types of memory is used is dependent on the OS (operating system). The kernel for instance, is a combination of the RAM, CPU (Central Processing Unit), and I/O (Input/Output) devices. UNIX®/Linux® systems use several complex algorithms for memory management, which allow the system to make efficient

...M ------------------------------------------------- Memory Management POS/355 August 12, 2013 Cynthia Wood Alicia Pearlman, Advanced Facilitator, University of Phoenix August 12, 2013 Cynthia Wood Alicia Pearlman, Advanced Facilitator, University of Phoenix Memory management requirements deal with relocation of processes, protection of the memory accessed from a process, sharing of memory for multiple processes, logical organization of structural for memory, and physical location of memory. The common types of memory are main memory and secondary memory. Main memory separate into two parts, the operating system and the user portion of the memory. User portion of memory sectioned off to accommodate multiple processes, which are waiting for engagement. Managing memory in a multiprogramming system is extremely important and requires main memory, on the user’s side, to share among the processes. Process stored on the main memory waits for transfer to an I/O device. To get the most value and most use of the processor’s time, it may become necessary to swap processes in and out of the main memory, for those processes not in a Ready or Running state. “The requirements that memory management is intended to satisfy.” (2012, 306) If swapping does not occur...

...UNIX, Linux, and Windows Server Critique POS/420 Name Professor Date University of Phoenix Abstract The following sections in this paper focus on analyzing operating systems for Riordan Manufacturing Inc. that specializes in plastic molding and design. Team B concentrated on five main areas of UNIX, Linux, and Windows Server. The five areas include Security, Administration, Networking, Performance, and Programmability. The team explains the existing systems, followed by comparing advantages and disadvantages of each operating system. The comparisons provide insight for Riordan’s IT specialist and administration considering which system to implement. Interesting topics that relate to security weaknesses, and advantages that UNIX® and Linux® compare against the operating giant, Microsoft Windows Server®. Security At the present time, Riordan Manufacturing’s network configurations consist of a heterogeneous UNIX and Windows environment. UNIX has been around for more than 40 years and is known for its’ robust power and scalability. According to the Open Group, “Security, which is often seen as a weakness for UNIX-based systems, is ensured using dedicated communication lines and secure communications protocols, along with strict authentication procedures” (para. 42). This means UNIX, just like Windows, requires configurations to make it a more secure system. Setting up file permissions, user access controls, as well as shutting down network services not currently active...

There is now an identifiable trend in industry toward downsizing that is replacing expensive mainframe computers with more cost-effective networks of personal computer that achieve the same or even better results. This trend has given rise to the architecture of the Client/Server Computing. The term Client/Server was first used in the 1980s in reference to personal computers on a network. The actual Client/Server model started gaining acceptance in the late 1980s. The term Client/Server is used to describe a computing model for the development of computerized systems. This model is based on the distribution of functions between two types of independent and autonomous entities:...

...Chapter 1 Structure and Functions of a Computer "Hardware: the parts of a computer that can be kicked." ~ Jeff Pesis After completing this chapter, you will be able to: 1. Explain the importance of computer literacy. 2. Define the term computer. 3. Identify the components of a computer. 4. Compare the uses of various types of: input devices, output devices, and storage devices. 5. Describe categories of computers and their uses. Structure and Functions of a Computer 1 1.0 Introduction A computer is an electronic machine designed for the storage and processing of data. The machinery is called hardware, and this highly sophisticated equipment needs equally sophisticated programs (called software) to become a working computer system. Modern society has come to depend very heavily on the use of computer systems. Banks, businesses, government departments, industries, shops, people at home and school all rely on computer to play a vital role in their daily activities. These activities are centered on information. In business, the computer system has been used a lot and replaced filing cabinets as means of storing information, and clerical workers as a means of processing it. By storing and processing information on a computer system, these businesses can function more quickly and efficiently, because information can be found and collated much faster. Discovery Learning: A computer was also called a data processor. Why? 1.1 Major Parts and Functions A Computer is...
