...First Amendment: Religion and Education Grand Canyon University: POS: 500 October 20, 2015 Religion and the First Amendment An examination of the First Amendment legal issues that arise when a student turns in an essay and the displaying of religious nature for an assignment will provide insight into how the First Amendment applies to classroom assignments. Each reason will provide important insight, information, and court cases to better help in giving a view of the first amendment in regards to religion and education. Legal Issues Regarding Grading of Assignment When grading a student essay, there are some legal issue that need to be considered. As a teacher, you cannot not accept a student’s work due to it containing anything related to religion. A school district has to abide by the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. In my school district, all students have a right to express themselves whether it is on a religious topic or something related to religion. A teacher should not grade a student’s essay on any religious topic based on their own beliefs, penalized, nor rewarded, but grade it by using regular academic standards and the content of the work (Saccopoulos, 2008). A school should never give the impression that they endorse any religious belief over another belief (Teaching Tolerance, 2014). While looking into the legal issues related to this scenario, the next step is to determine the proper displaying of student’s work. Appropriateness of Displaying...

...R/ST 341i: MW 3:30 pm Final Essay-1 The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Lin-chi One of the greatest Zen Masters of all time, who spoke powerfully to awaken without compromise, was Ch’an Master Lin-chi. Among the most important texts of Zen literature, the Zen Teachings of Master Lin-chi details the insights and exploits of the great ninth century Chinese Zen master Lin-chi, one of the most highly regarded of the T'ang period masters. This essay discusses about some main themes in the Record of Lin-chi. “The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master” depicts the exchange between Lin-chi and the monk-questioner in much more vivid terms. Following the monk's question: "Who is the true man with no rank?” the passage continues Lin-chi provocations with "the Master got down from his chair, seized hold of the monk and said "Speak! Speak!" (Watson 1). The monk tried to say something. The Master let go of him, and said: "The true man with no rank-what a dried shit stick!" He then returned to his quarters." Lin-chi is really saying that the essential Buddha is the One who controls the physical body. This "true man without rank" has no form and is definitely not a fixed thing. The "true man" is intrinsically free from the basic qualities of material and mental phenomena. The One who sits upon this lump of red flesh is free of impermanence, suffering, and insubstantiality — what Buddhists call "the three marks" of conditioned phenomena. True nature is intrinsically free, now and forever ( Watson...

What Cultural Factors Must U.S. Sports Franchises Overcome to Increase Popularity Abroad?

...When researching our question of “What cultural factors must U.S. sports franchises overcome to increase popularity abroad? “And “Why?” you need to see things through the eyes of people from overseas. First how do our sports fit into their lives? , remember some of our sports differ in names. Soccer in the US is generally called football is most of Europe and Asia where as in America Football is a totally different game. This is the problem the NFL has overseas people have traditions set when it comes to soccer and rivalries already exist and these are two cultural factors a U.S. franchise must overcome, not to mention must people overseas don’t like the fact that we decided to call our sport football as the foot isn’t nearly the biggest aspect of the game. Some of the biggest obstacles are cultural difference. Just because it’s popular here in America doesn’t mean it will be a hit in other countries. There are many cultures abroad, and it’s nearly impossible to predict what all those cultures will enjoy. Market research comes into play heavily when deciding to take our sports overseas. Years ago US teams were mainly comprised of US athletes. But now as the U.S. sport franchises try and go global they are scouting and recruiting foreign athletes, which makes not only that team but also it might make that sport popular with that country of which these foreign players come from. Just like with any business wanting to go global they have to be willing to adapt to that countries...

...stating: ““She did something wonderful mar-velous . . . . She cried”” (66). It is unclear whether Buchanan sheds tears as a form of emotional response or if she is her eyes are merely watering as a response to their sensitivity from posing. Warhol’s art is tricky in the way that it is working with an arbitrary idea or conception, but it still holds on to a very societally charged framework in which people can achieve glamourous-ness “by following a certain script (or fashion or diet or make-up method) which they claim will make us “similar” to the stars we admire” (45). Interpreting Buchanan’s screen test, particularly trying to do so through the lens of Warhol and with the insight of Weingart, the tear(s) can signify the pain and hardship of “pos(ing) or perform(ing) as oneself under the constraints of a cultural gaze. Though, make up is such a surface level component in the production of our identity performance, as a young woman in...

They have millions of employees that literally help run the country we all know as home. Their jobs range from postal services, public broadcasting, and to being in control of student loans. The federal bureaucracy plays such a significant role in our everyday lives that sometimes we do not even realize it. My essay will explain five ways in which the federal bureaucracy regulates my everyday life. I will explain the five agencies that are associated with these regulations and give an in depth explanation of the agencies specific job description and how they affect my life. The federal bureaucracy affects my life more than I knew. I was very surprised to learn that almost every move I make and every think I do on a daily basis is based on the federal regulations. My fiancé is in the process of starting his own business so one of my first errands I or we have to run almost every day is to the bank. The bank that I use is run by the Federal Reserve Board (FRB). When I am home I wait for the mail to come because clients send receipts for invoices they receive and I have to keep track of all of them to ensure our books are straight and that all payments have been made. This goes for our monthly bills we get in the mail as well. The United States Postal Service is in charge...
