MEMORANDUM
To: FedEx Executives & Board
From: Henry J. Maier/ CEO FedEx Ground Date: September 30, 2014
Subject: Daily Service Reduction in Rural Areas
After careful deliberation, FedEx Ground will serve only three times a week to rural areas with a population less than 4,500 per fifty square miles.
Our decision is based on recent research on economic data that illustrates the decline in time, labor, and resources if we provide our services every single day.
Our expected savings will benefit FedEx in many ways:
Corporate Benefits
• An estimate of 45% savings in the next two years
• Maximizing our resources availability for urban areas by reduction in rural areas.
• Minimizing our explicit and implicit costs
Employee Benefits
• An estimate of a 10% increase in all benefits, such as dental and health benefits No job loss
• No job loss
• An estimate of a 15%-35% in salary increase to ALL distribution centers and drivers to increase retention
FedEx Ground needs your full support to implement this strategy. Countless hours have been spent on research and data and have showed that we would save nearly $15 million in over the next five years. The alternative would be reduction in jobs, payroll, and resources. These reductions will stunt the growth of the company and prevent us from making a profit. Unfortunately, due to our options being limited, we must go through with this decision. If you have any questions regarding this change or would like to give your input in the decision, feel free to contact my office by phone or email. Thank you for your attention and cooperation.

Goal Setting in an Organization - Fedex

...Goal Setting in an Organization - FedEx Name: Institution: Date: Introduction FedEx express is a renowned company whose headquarters are in the US (Berkeley, 1962). Since its inception, the company managed to move greater heights, thus becoming a giant in the provision of freight, and other carrier services. However, these great achievements did not originate from a vacuum, but through the firm’s concerted efforts. As such, this research paper provides an insight into one of the company’s organizational behaviour process. Main Body Like other multinationals, FedEx Express Corporation does not operate in a vacuum, despite its major success story. The firm does not operate in a vacuum because various external factors affect its operations. Some of the external factors include political factors, labor pressures and technology shift. Technologically, since the inception of freight and carrier services by different companies, things have not been stagnant. For example, with the inception of modern technology FedEx Express embraced many changes in its operations. Some of the new aspects adopted by the corporation include online booking of freight, and other cargo delivery services (Berkeley, 1962). Through this platform, the customers are able to book for transportation of their goods, and other services online, anywhere across the globe. Further, through this platform, the clients are able to verify the status of their various transactions within a short time,...

Fedex Company Analysis

...Company Analysis: FedEx Iveta Stoycheva MNGT 370 Dr. Charles Funk 12/07/2010 FedEx Corporation specializes in overnight delivery of high-priority packages, documents, and heavy freight. The company created the overnight air-express industry virtually singlehandedly in the 1970s; its success was such that by the 1990s it faced the sincerest form of flattery: increasing competition from rival carriers However, FedEx's continued mastery of logistics and its ability to track packages during the shipping process has enabled it to retain its leadership role in the express air cargo industry, as well as act as a moving warehouse for numerous corporate and individual customers. It operates in 211 countries, and serves all of the United States, providing 24-to-48-hour delivery of valuable, time-sensitive cargo to any destination worldwide. FedEx was founded as Federal Express Corporation in 1971, by 28-year- old Memphis, Tennessee, native Frederick W. Smith. Smith, a former Marine pilot, originally outlined his idea for an overnight delivery service in a term paper he wrote for a Yale University economics class. He felt that air freight had different requirements than air passenger service and that a company specializing in air freight rather than making it an add-on to passenger service would find a lucrative business niche. Speed was more important than cost, in Smith's view, and access to smaller cities was essential. His strategies...

...transporting goods and services. The businesses that can leverage technological advances are in a position to garner market share and add value to their shareholders. FedEx has become a world leader in the parcel delivery business. The name FedEx evokes thoughts of getting packages to customers the next day. FedEx now is used as a verb to tell customers that a shipment will be sent so that it is received the next day. Delivering a product on-schedule is the result of multiple business processes working seamlessly to create a Value Chain that yields a firm greater profit over costs (Dess, Lumpkin, & Eisner, 2007). A primary activity of the Value Chain is Supply Chain Management (SCM). Supply Chain Management is the oversight of materials, information, and finances as they move in a process from supplier to manufacturer to wholesaler to retailer to consumer ((2006). ...Non-cash Transactions 9 Conclusion 10 Works Cited 11 FedEx: Power of Global Trade Introduction The purpose of this paper is to analyze the annual report of a publicly traded company. I have chosen to review FedEx. This report will be reviewing the 2011 Annual Report issued by FedEx. The choice of FedEx is twofold. The first factor being that I am a little partially bias toward FedEx because I worked for one of their companies, FedEx Express, for over three years. FedEx Express was a fabulous company to work for because they offered a competitive wage and excellent benefits to part time hourly employees. The company’s ability to offer those competitive wages leads into the other factor, their impact on the global economy. FedEx is a massive corporation with reach to every market within the global economy. Their services are literally the life line that facilitates global trade. Without the air cargo industry, the global economy would be severely hindered. According to the FedEx 2011 Annual Report, 30% of the global GDP in 2010 was reliant by international trade of goods. In 1991, international trade was only represented by 3.7% of the air cargo industry. Based on FedEx analysis, in 2015 the international trade will be 17.7% of the air cargo industry. That growth in international trade is directly related to companies within the air cargo market, such as FedEx, continually expanding and developing more efficient means for delivery. Analyzing...

...FedEx CEO Fred Smith on ... everything May 11, 2012: 5:00 AM ET Smith sounds off on China, the U.S. economy, the value of a good name, and why the government shouldn't pay for a liberal arts education. By Brian Dumaine, senior editor-at-large Fred Smith sees fast growth ahead in the developing world. Fred Smith sees fast growth ahead in the developing world. FORTUNE -- When Fred Smith founded FedEx in 1971, he had just returned from the Vietnam War, where he had served as a Marine platoon leader and then a pilot, and he was casting around for something to do. As legend has it, a paper he had written at Yale -- he doesn't remember the grade but is pretty sure it wasn't a good one -- laid out the idea for a hub-and-spoke system for delivering time-sensitive items like computer parts. He borrowed money from his sisters, leased some jets, and started his service. Today FedEx (No. 70 on the Fortune 500), with headquarters in Memphis, has 255,000 employees, 688 planes, and more than 90,000 vehicles that operate in some 220 countries and regions. Here's the world according to Fred Smith. Edited excerpts: Q: In 2000 you started morphing from your traditional air express delivery business into ground and into freight. What was the thinking behind that strategy shift? A: Well, in 2000 we were probably competing in a $50 billion annual [sales] market space. Today we're directly competing in about a $350 billion to $400 billion marketplace. Going into ground and freight...

Mba532 Leadership

...MBA532 Leadership Unit 8 Manning suggests that while women tend to be hypercritical of themselves, men are often more confident of their abilities than they ought to be. Briefly agree or disagree. Then, address how you, as a leader of an increasingly androgynous workforce, would remedy such varying self-perceptions. In other words, how would you formulate an effective strategy to lead those two groups while maintaining consistency of approach to treating all equally? Be specific in how would you get men to have a more realistic assessment of their abilities and convince women to focus less on perceived imperfections. I agree that women are more hypercritical of themselves and some probably think less of themselves because of social expectations. Society expects women to carry all of burdens of raising a family, cooking, cleaning, and being a good wife. That is a lot of pressure for women to deal with on a daily basis. Women in the workplace do not make the same money as men that are doing the same job. Women are defined by their appearance first and their abilities last by society. Men for the most part have been the bread winner of the family, and the head of the family. Men made all of the decisions about how the money would be spent, while women held their hand out for their allowance. Some men on the other hand are more confident in themselves because women allow them to be confident in themselves even when they are wrong. When I first became a Team Leader, I was...

...FREDERICK W. SMITH August 11, 1944 marks a special day in history, not because a local, tiny hospital recorded another birth at their facility, or that the humble little town in Marks, Mississippi added another “member” to their thriving population of about 1,500; it marks a day when a little boy, born of modest means, would grow and learn how to make an honest dollar and eventually lead the corporate world, through savvy business relationships and exemplary leadership practices, to a place never before thought possible, the place of overnight logistics with next-day, on-time delivery. Frederick Wallace Smith, the son of a successful businessman, grew up in a tiny town in rural Mississippi. His father, James Frederick Smith, owned a chain of restaurants known as Toddle House; he also owned Smith Motor coach Company (renamed the Dixie Greyhound Lines after the Greyhound corporation bought a controlling interest in 1931). Fred Smith’s father died, however, when the boy was only 4 years old, leaving him to be raised by his mother and uncles. –Kouzes and Pousner (Kouzes, 2003) Now, some may say that the longstanding legacy of hard work, honest business practices and sound leadership ethics died with the passing of Smith’s father; I, however, beg to differ. I believe that the young Fred Smith, despite his early age, saw a man of character and a leader in his father who, in his time, helped shaped the face of fine dining and cross-country travel the way we’ve come...
