...Lee English 1302- 7:30 am August 5, 2014 The Smallest Things Can Make A Difference I have chosen to study “Post-Its (Notes on Marriage)” by Winnie Holzman and Paul Dooley. This is a short drama in which a man and a woman go through some ups and downs in their relationship and it is being told by the post-it notes they left for each other. I believe this piece of literature is important because it shows the little details in a person’s life and how they add up together. It is a great example in how such few little details can add up to how much you love someone. I have chosen this because I enjoy drama, character development, and it’s ending. This is a drama that may seem “basic” but it holds so much depth in it when it is given complete attention. This text is also extremely relatable because the characters are referred to as “man” and “woman”. Therefore, it can be anyone, which allows the text to become more personal to the audience. This drama starts off with a cute and comedic banter between a man and a woman. As they both enter the room and approach the table, the man notices that the woman does not sit down because she is waiting for him to pull out her chair, so he does. After she is seated, the man stands and waits by his chair. The woman realizes what he wants and after a while goes to seats him as he did her. After this, the man reads the first post-it., “Had an early meeting, couldn’t bear to wake you. Close front door hard or it won’t lock. P.S: Last night was...

...Reading Response 1: Making it in America Richa Parikh 997543154 The transition from Fordism to Post-Fordism in the United States marked a significant change in the organization of businesses. Standard Motor Products(SMP) was initiated in the early 1900s as an after-market automobile parts manufacturer headquartered in Long Island City, Queens. United States was in the midst of an industrial revolution, and concepts of Taylorism and Fordism had barely diffused. Businesses had more control over deciding which products to produce and they primarily marketed to a particular societal class. This allowed room for mass production of standardized products which would lead to mass consumption. SMP thrived through their division of labour and economies of scale that this model of consumption advocated. Then came the burst of globalization, which facilitated access to new markets in order increase profits and shareholder value. Powerful multinationals which exploited these markets from its onset grew considerably in size. As SMP was small in comparison to this competition, it could not influence discount policies from its suppliers and thus, it had to cut costs elsewhere to keep its business profitable. Cutting down costs by expanding into regions with a cheaper labour pool was the only option they had to ensure their survival. Based on the capitalist premise that underlines the economy of the United States, it is through competition that the businesses improve and evolve. For this...

...Post It In the Office or In the Bedroom As time has gone by, advertisement agencies have evolved to appeal to the masses, but as the trends have changed, Aristotle’s three methods of persuasion Ethos, Logos, and Pathos have remained constant throughout the years. As Ethos appeals to the audience’s moral compass and character, Pathos appeals to their emotions, and Logos appeals the logic of the individual in order to jointly make an impression on each reader. These three methods of persuasion have remained throughout the evolution of advertising, and with the impact they allow advertisements to make, they will continue to be a constant aspect of advertising in the future. This Post It advertisement is a humorous appeal to the everyday reader. The average person, young or old, cannot wait for the weekend and the adventures that come along with it. This particular aspect of those adventures deal with the morning after releasing all of that weekday angst. That awkward moment when you wake up and want to know what happened, where it happened, and who with. Whether they had a one night stand or simply were too inebriated to remember a new friend’s name, everyone has had an awkward moment like this pictured above. The note attached to the woman’s forehead seems to be the key to avoid such an awkward situation and being a bad host. This advertisement implies that with Post It notes in hand, the reader will not have to worry about seeming like a bad person and that if unavoidable,...

...“If I had thought about it, I wouldn't have done the experiment. The literature was full of examples that said you can't do this.” - Spencer Silver on the work that led to the unique adhesives for 3-M Post-It Notepads. Innovation has been described by The Oxford Dictionary as the introduction of new things, ideas or ways of doing something. The Post-it Note is a product so conceptually simple, that in the technologically advanced time we live in, we have been almost desensitised to its brilliant innovation. The innovation of the Post It Note went through a number of distinct stages and processes. In this assignment I will attempt to give a clear and cohesive analysis starting from the earliest ideas of the Post It right through to the products available today. 3M The physical invention of the post it spanned over a period of 10 years, however, I believe the earliest derivation of the modern day Post It Note can be traced back to the very establishment of the 3M Company itself. In 1902 the business got off to a rather bad start when a group of investors by mistake bought a mountain containing worthless mineral to start a business to mine corundum to manufacture sand paper). Unsurprisingly the company did not generate profit for 14 years. Seemingly spurred on by their less than successful origins, 3m have since always strived to create a working environment in which innovation can flourish. Brand (1998) on the topic of 3m states that “to guarantee such conditions are in place...

...Post it Notes – Case Study Questions Question 1 In the development of this product, how did the creative thinking process work? Describe what took place in each of the four steps. . The Post-It Notes case has clearly illustrated the 4 phases in creativity development and each step has demonstrated by the inventor of Post-It Notes as described below: * Background or knowledge accumulation This phase was demonstrated by Art Fry who is the inventor of Post-It Notes whereby he recalled about the adhesive invented by Dr. Spencer Silver from a seminar he attended in the past. He approaches the R&D department to gather a background information and knowledge about adhesives that developed by Dr. Spencer Silver. * The mind incubation process This incubation process occurs while Art Fry singing in the church choir. Most of the time, the bookmark kept failing out of his hymnal, causing him to lose his page while performing. This prompted him to find a solution or something that could adhere to the page but not tear it. He went on to explore the possibility with the helps from R&D team and managed to find a low-tack adhesive that turn out to be a perfect solution to prevent the bookmark falling out. * The idea experience As Fry’s idea of applying the low-tack adhesive on the bookmark was proven an effective solution, he begin to realize that the same concept could possible turn into a new product. * Evaluation and Implementation This phase was demonstrated...

...1. What is Humanism? What is Post structuralism? Humanism refers to the belief of human-centered, and not centered by god. It is said that in the pre-humanist western culture, god was presumed to the origin of the universe, and the center of meaning. After the 17th – 18th centuries, the figure of god was slowly replaced by ‘man’, as it becomes the center and measure of all things. Humanism is also centrally concerned with ‘reason’ (Rationalism), where it enables us not only to think, but also to act correctly. Moreover, it also emphasizes on individualism. According to the humanist system, individuals are unique and autonomous by nature, rational and free. Humanism also embraces the idea of ‘general principles’ (Idealism), these principles are believed to be equally applicable to all people, at all times, in all places (Universalism). Besides, these principles must also be able to be proven to be true in and through careful observation and rational, objective methods of argumentation, known as ‘Empiricism’. Last but not least, humanism is founded on dichotomous logic, where the world is centered with a serious of oppositions. (E.g. Male vs. Female, Good vs. Bad). Post-structuralism is referred to ‘the crisis of humanism’, where there is a diminishing belief in rationality, absolute truth, objectivity, universal principles and dichotomous logic. It claims that people cannot always be rational and objective, as we are always affected by our emotions and results in being more...

...Zakaria Post American World Book Review Few would disagree that the previous U.S. administration of George W. Bush Jr. plunged America’s international reputation to an all-time low. Even as the country staggers to recover international goodwill under President Barack Obama, a homegrown credit crisis, captured most strikingly in the collapse of several iconic institutions of American industry like Citigroup and General Motors, has brought the U.S. economy to a standstill. Few would doubt that America will eventually recover from both crises. Be that as it may, the unipolar moment, centered on the preeminence of American power, purse, and presence may well and truly be over, or so we are often told. What powers will take the place of the U.S and how will these new players and forces be configured? This is the question that Fareed Zakaria attempts to answer in his latest tome, The Post-American World. The continued viability of American global dominance has been the subject of great intellectual debate over the past decade or so. Fareed however, is not interested – at least not explicitly – in contributing to the debate on whether America is still the sole superpower, nor is he keen on using that debate as a point of entry. Indeed, as he makes poignantly clear in the first sentence of the book, his interest is in “the rise of the rest,” and it is only in the final third of the book (circa p.182 onwards) that Fareed ponders “how America will fare in the new world.” The Post-American...

...Post Production report My story board for the opening sequence would have been easy to create a moving image from as it gave clear to illustration of what I wanted the sequence to look like. I also noted a range of transitions and camera movements to make it clear how I wanted each shot to look, what I wanted the sequence to be paced etc. The music choice of ‘Hans Zimmer – Dream is collapsing’ was good as it was more upbeat than the classical song used in the first two shots and created suspense. I chose to subvert Todorov’s narrative structure which most of the films I analysed followed and started at a point that was not equilibrium as the main character was in danger from the start and ended up seriously injured. The image I used from my posters were inspired by my storyboard. The image used on my teaser poster is inspired by the second shot of my storyboard as a sense of mystery is created as you can only see a small amount of the persons face. I changed the shot into a mid shot for my cover poster as you can clearly see the convention of ‘Business wear’ used in spy films. Doing this made the genre of the film more recognisable even though there was not much information on the teaser poster. I super imposed the image onto a white background to make the whole image brighter and I used high key lighting on the image to make image more eye catching. I lastly covered my background image in a filter which gives the image a similar effect to something that has been pixilated...

...The Post-American World We have entered a new age of economic growth. Fareed Zakaria explains in his bestseller, “The Post-American World”, that we are currently experiencing the third power shift in 500 years. In “The Post-American World”, Zakaria shows us where America stands when compared to rapidly growing countries. America can no longer hold its position of acting director on the world stage with countries rapidly catching up. It is now America’s duty to provide suggestion pertaining to problems arising of rapid growth. We can no longer police the world. “The world is moving from anger to indifference, from anti-Americanism to post-Americanism. The fact that new powers are more strongly asserting their interests is the reality of the post-American world. It also raises the political conundrum of how to achieve international objectives in a world of many actors, state and nonstate.” (The Post-American World 2.0, Page 39) We have now entered the third of three power shifts. First, there was a shift of power to the western world during the Renaissance. We call this “Rise of the Western World.” Next, The United States became a global superpower during the Rise of the United States. The US dominated with its “secret sauce” consisting of enhanced global economics, capitalism, individual rights, science, technology, and education. Since The Rise of the United States, many countries have found their way to growth and modernization. Japan was the first to adopt western methods...

...Canada as a Post-Industrial Country Canada’s practices of work and work values have been evolving throughout history. From the early days when agriculture dominated the economy, to the gradual transition into manufacturing and processing, we can see that Canada’s economy is always changing. More recently, we are seeing a similar shift from manufacturing to the service sector of the economy. This paper provides an analysis of Canadian society and whether we can be considered a post-industrial country. A society tends to be classified according to the degree to which different groups within that society have unequal access to rewards such as resources, status, or power. Although humans have established many types of societies over time, I will focus on defining two main categories including industrial and post-industrial society. Industrial societies are driven by the use of machines and factories to enable mass production. They are generally characterized by the use of external energy sources to increase the rate and scale of production. Industrialization brought about changes in almost every aspect of society. As factories became the center of work, urbanization became desirable and large cities emerged. Wage work and job specialization allowed more efficient means to manufacture goods, but also lead to a more complex division of labour. Post-industrial societies are based on information, knowledge, and the selling of services. This society develops at a stage when the...

...The Global Post-Apocalypse Response Paper The foreign movie I watched is a French zombie movie called ‘La Horde’. I had actually watched this movie a few times with subtitles and when reading the assignment immediately thought of this film. This one review written by Felix Vasquez Jr mentions how it is not quite the same as other zombie movies due to lack of emphasis on the characters. ““La Horde” is one of the many zombie flicks that just doesn’t understand a good zombie movie has to be about the people in and around it and less about the zombies”. In this movie the zombies take center stage and you cannot get into the story. However it also mentions in this review how all the audience wants to see in a movie like this is gore. “Necks are chomped on, bodies pile up, and the zombies all look menacing as they gather around the high rise prepared to feast on whatever crosses their paths” This movie is based in Paris in 2008 around the exact same time the economy fell and the EU had to bail out fellow countries of the European union to the financial situation. This movie could be in context to what happened during the financial crisis. The characters in this movie done whatever they had to do to survive and to keep their friends alive. It also shows that sometimes you need make unlikely alliances to achieve something and in this case the police had to make an unlikely alliance to stay alive. The plot revolves around a group of policemen who embark on a mission seeking...

...This essay is an attempt to examine A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, within the critical theoretical framework of Chris Weedon’s essay, ‘Feminism and the Principles of Post Structuralism’. At the heart of feminist post structuralism lies the theory of post structuralism itself. The theory offers a way to study the conditions of how knowledge is produced. To understand an object it is necessary to study both the object and the systems within which it is produced and lives. Post-feminist structuralism seeks to examine the production of knowledge as it impacts on gender. The pervasiveness of male discourse is a particular target for post-structuralist feminism. What I hope to achieve is an analysis of the theory in relation to the character of Catherine Barkley and her romantic relationship with the novel’s narrator and protagonist Frederick Henry. For poststructuralist theory the common factor in the analysis of social organization, social meanings, power and individual consciousness is language. Language is the place where actual and possible forms of social organization and their likely social and political consequences are defined and contested. Weedon in Storey, ed. (555) However, within Hemingway’s novels language is used to different effect, or rather the omission of it is. Hemingway’s aversion to theory is discussed in Owens-Murphy’s essay on pragmatism. She quotes Scott Donaldson as saying both Hemingway and his characters...

...An ex post facto law is a law that retroactively changes the legal consequences (or status) of actions that were committed, or relationships that existed, before the enactment of the law. In criminal law, it may criminalize actions that were legal when committed; it may aggravate a crime by bringing it into a more severe category than it was in when it was committed; it may change the punishment prescribed for a crime, as by adding new penalties or extending sentences; or it may alter the rules of evidence in order to make conviction for a crime likelier than it would have been when the deed was committed. Conversely, a form of ex post facto law commonly called an amnesty law may decriminalize certain acts or alleviate possible punishments (for example by replacing the death sentence with lifelong imprisonment) retroactively. Such laws are also known by the Latin term in mitius. A law may have an ex post facto effect without being technically ex post facto. For example, when a law repeals a previous law, the repealed legislation is no longer applicable to situations to which it previously was, even if such situations arose before the law was repealed. The principle of prohibiting the continued application of such laws is called Nullum crimen, nulla poena sine praevia lege poenali, especially in European Continental systems. Some common-law jurisdictions do not permit retroactive criminal legislation, though new precedent generally applies to events that occurred before the judicial...
