Post-Op Infection Paper

Having surgery recently I was very concern about developing a post-op infection and thankful that I did not. I was provided with DYNA-HEX 4 by the hospital with instruction to start using two days before surgery and the morning of surgery in hope to prevent an infection. Infection prevention before, during and after surgeries is so important. Patient’s morbidity can depend on surgical infections. Infections can be referred to as hospital-acquired infections; however, they are now known as health care-associated infection (HAI) (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2016). The etiology of HAIs can be caused by patient’s body or be introduced to the patient by medical staff. Each facility has infection control policies and procedures; however, these policies

Evidence & Expert Interview Paper

...Evidence & Expert Interview Paper Kimberly Russell Chamberlain School of Nursing Instructor Sniffen NR 447 Collaborative Health Care Evidence & Expert Interview Paper Introduction I have chosen two SMART goals to research and put into action by the end of week six of class. SMART Goal 1 is the leadership development goal and will standardize the surgical time-out procedure to include all required elements as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and meet the requirements of the Joint Commission Universal Protocol. I chose this goal for myself to ensure that all nurses are consistently including all required information each and every time in the surgical time-out procedure and as a result will increase patient safety regarding wrong site surgery. SMART Goal 2 is the organizational planning goal which is to educate all staff on the required dry time for surgical skin prep liquids used in the operating room. I chose this goal after the sales representatives from Duraprep and Chloraprep gave an in-service and I realized that we were not allowing appropriate surgical skin prep dry time which puts our patients in danger for a surgical fire and increases the chance of post-op wound infection. Goal 1: Leadership Development Through my leadership development goal I will standardize the time-out procedure to include all the required elements as recommended by WHO. I will accomplish this by creating an “All Stop” for time-out...

Agent Policy Paper

...Agent Policy Paper Risk Management is defined as policies and procedures put in place to enhance infection control, patient safety, and quality of service. In healthcare there is always the risk of something getting out of hand and hurting a patient or even the staff of the facility. My facility is a Nursing Home/ Long-Term Care Facility about 2/3 of the residents are just elderly people suffering from ailing health, dementia, or Alzheimer’s. The other 1/3 is post-op recovery patients that need some where to recover before they head home; the average recovery time is 6-8 weeks. My facility has no one person dedicated to Risk Management. The closest we have is an Infection Control Nurse who is responsible for ensuring that no outbreaks of any sort happen and if it does happen it is her responsibility to ensure that the outbreak is contained as well. The Infection Control Nurse is also tasked with administering and keeping updated all records of TB tests. Upon asking her, I was informed that the current standards and policies were given to us during our initial employee orientation. My role as a Respiratory Therapist it falls to me to assist all the new patients as they come into our facility to determine their respiratory needs. Also in case of any code situation, it is the responsibility of the on-duty RT to take charge and stabilize the patient until Emergency Medical Services arrives and then transfer custody of the patient to EMS to deliver them to Emergency Department...

Curiculum Development Paper

...Curriculum Development Paper Identification of the educational need and rationale. Prevention is better than the cure, medical technology and development of hospitals as the focus of health care practice. The CDC estimated a total of 1.7 million patients in the hospital that gets a nosocomial infection and 99,000 will die from the infection. This results to one patient death in every five minutes, hospitalized patients Hospital acquired pneumonia is currently the second most common nosocomial infection in the United States and is associated with high mortality and morbidity (Seymann, 2008). Higher rates of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP), functional decline, pressure ulcers, and falls are a few factors that leads to prolonged bed-rest . HAP Iis a pneumonia that begins within 48 hours after hospitalization and does not incubate at the time of admission. Because individuals with hospital-acquired pneumonia usually have underlying illnesses and are exposed to more dangerous bacteria, it tends to be more deadly than community-acquired pneumonia (Seymann, 2008). Those at risk include patients with a compromised immune system, are HIV positive, have been hospitalized for more than two days, reside in a nursing home, have COPD, diabetes, heart failure, are elderly, alcoholics or have other underlying disorders (Smeltzer, et al). A new report regarding the high death rate due to hospital acquired pneumonia was a an issue that could not be ignored by congress in light of the...

...Final Exam Study Guide Important to Know the function of anterior and posterior pituitary gland. Anterior Pituitary Gland: (Adenohypophysis) The anterior pituitary gland regulates several physiological processes including stress, growth, reproduction and lactation (Adrenal, liver, bone, thryroid and gonads). -It is regulated by negative feedback and the hypothalamus. Major hormones: ACTH: Stimulates the adrenal cortex. TSH: Thyroid stimulating hormone, promotes secretion of thyroid hormone. FSH: Follicle-stimulating hormone, promotes growth of reproductive system. LH: Luteinizing hormone. Promotes sex hormone production GH: Growth hormone, promotes growth, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. PRL: Prolactin, Milk production and progesterone/estrogen. -Hormones are secreted from the hypothalamus to the A. Pituitary so these hormones can be released. Posterior Pituitary Gland: Mainly axons extended from the hypothalamus. These axons contain and release neurohypophysial hormones oxytocin and vasopressin. Oxytocin: Targets the uterus, and mammary glands causing contractions and lactation. Vasopressin (ADH): Antidiuretic hormone, arginine vasopressin, argipressin. ...action. Nurses have long used tradition rather than evidence in making decisions about beside care; to convince them to switch practice, it is useful to draw a comparison between the efficacy of these disparate routes. Our study designed a research question based on the PICOT model for the cardiac floors and designed procedures using the Kotter and Cohen’s Model of Change. In order to study the effect discussed in our PICOT question, a web search was conducted and the quality of each pertinent study reviewed. Introduction In the nursing staff of an adult Cardiac Surgical Care unit, how does the buy-in from the staff for Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) changes in a new Coronary Arterial Bypass Graft (CABG) pathway affect the decreases in infection rate among this patient population when compared to the old way of delivering patient care through nursing tradition in a six month time frame? The formation of a guideline for practice in nursing is not a new occurrence; books and manuals have been a reality for many years. However, in the past these resources lacked the evidence for standards of care, which traditionally have been based on professional consensus and tradition. The Joint Commission has recognized processes that can be measured regarding patient outcomes and care in order to meet standards for Medicare qualification. These standards, known in cardiac care as the Surgical Care Incision Protocol (SCIP), help to guarantee that cardiac surgical patients receive the best standard...

Rup Paper

...RUP1 Project Shawna Setzer Western Governors University Nursing In the Modern World Nurses of today have to make countless choices on how to provide the best care for each patient they care for. A nurse has to maintain a professional appearance and attitude while balancing making ethical decisions and putting aside own values and morals to given the best possible to care to each patient assigned to them each day. Some nurses assume the role as a charge nurse and have to make choices on how to divide the patients up to make it fair for safe each patient. In order to obtain these skills a nurse has to graduate for an accredited school of nursing and pass a state board. Each state has their own rules and regulations to maintain a current license. For example in the state of Washington the Washington Department of Health and Welfare regulates all nursing licenses and renewals, it also regulates the standards of care provided. The Department also has the right to take disciplinary actions against nurses. If a nurse chooses they can become certified in a specific field of nursing. These programs are private organizations such as the Association of Certified Medical- Surgical Registered Nursing. In order to qualify for this organization a nurse has to work a certain amount of hours in the stated field and take another test to prove that they have the knowledge to care for patients in this field of nursing. Nurses who are certified...

...then placed back in the tunica vaginalis and sutured. Postoperative, antibiotic (Tribrissen) and analgesic (Metacam) were given for three days following surgery. Lactated ringers solution were given to rats during this time, to prevent dehydration post surgery.Three groups of rats were used in this study, and underwent subcutaneous injections of testosterone or sterile vegetable oil for twenty one days. On Day twenty one, the sexual response bioassay was performed on all animal models using Apomorphine, to stimulate an erectile response. Apomorphine is a dopamine receptor agonist drug that stimulates dopamine in the brain, works in combination with the nervous and muscular system centre which increases sexual responses. Apomorphine has been used in veterinary medicine as an emetic in canines, and has been used to treat drug addictions, parkinson’s disease and erectile dysfunction or “hypomobility” conditions in humans. Apomorphine has been reported to produce erections with little adverse effects (10). In this study Apomorphine was used as stimulant for an erectile response in all three groups of the study. A yawn was indicative that the apomorphine was taking effect in the rats; with some models having erections, based on their post operation status. This sexual function assay study on Sprague dawley rats, is related to the sexual function in humans, and the underlying causes of erectile dysfunction. Humans typically experience two main types of erections: Reflexogenic and...

Banana Used as Fertilizer

...THE EFFECTIVENESS BANANA (MUSA X PARADISIACA) PEELS USED AS FERTILIZER APPLIED IN DIFFERENT KINDS OF PLANTS SAMPLES RESEARCHER: BERLENE GAIL H. LAMA CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Background of the study A banana peel, known as a banana skin in British English, is the outer covering of the banana fruit. As bananas, whether eaten raw or cooked, are a popular fruit consumed worldwide, with yearly production over 145 million tonnes in 2011, there is a significant amount of banana peel waste being generated as well. Banana peels are used as feedstock as they have some nutritional value. Banana peels are widely used for that purpose on small farms in regions where bananas are grown. There are some concerns over the impact of tannins contained in the peels on animals that consume them.[3][4] Banana peels are used as feedstock for cattle, goats, pigs, poultry, rabbits, fish and several other species. The specific nutrition contained in peel depends on the stage of maturity and the cultivar; for example plantain peels contain less fibre than dessert banana peels, and lignin content increases with ripening (from 7 to 15% dry matter). On average, banana peels contain 6-9% dry matter of protein and 20-30% fibre (measured as NDF). Green plantain peels contain 40% starch that is transformed into sugars after ripening. Green banana peels contain much less starch (about 15%) when green while ripe banana peels contain up to 30% free sugars. Banana peels are also used for water purification...
