The sound of music and chanting fill your ears. The sight of dancers gracefully moving across the floor grabs your attention. The food from the feast makes your eyes water. This, is a potlatch. A potlatch is a magnificent party celebrated by the Native American tribes of the Northwest. They took lots of planning and were a big deal. At most potlatches everyone would get a gift. The more important the person, the better the gift. At most big event potlatches you would get to feast, dance, trade, tell and hear stories, and many wedding took place. These huge parties usually took place at the Kitsap Peninsula and the Puget Sound Area where each tribe could trade various items. Potlatches were very important to the Natives of
