...Poverty remains the most critical social problem that needs to be addressed. Philippines' poverty line marks a per capita income of 16,841 pesos a year.[1] According to the data from the National Statistical Coordination Board, more than one-quarter (27.9%) of the population fell below the poverty line the first semester of 2012, an approximate 1 per cent increase since 2009.[2] This figure is a much lower figure as compared to the 33.1% in 1991.[3] The decline has been slow and uneven, much slower than neighboring countries who experienced broadly similar numbers in the 1980s,[4] such as People's Republic of China (PRC), Thailand, Indonesia (where the poverty level lies at 8.5%) or Vietnam (13.5%). This shows that the incidence of poverty has remained significantly high as compared to other countries for almost a decade. The unevenness of the decline has been attributed to a large range of income brackets across regions and sectors, and unmanaged population growth. The Philippines poverty rate is roughly the same level as Haiti.[4] The government planned to eradicate poverty as stated in the Philippines Development Plan 2011-2016 (PDP). The PDP for those six years are an annual economic growth of 7%-8% and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Under the MDGs, Philippines committed itself to halving extreme poverty from a 33.1% in 1991 to 16.6% by 2015.[4] Contents [hide] 1 The causes of poverty 1.1 Rapid population growth 1.2 Unemployment 2 See also ...

There are nine steps in writing a term paper, which will be illustrated with brief examples. Step 1: Select a Subject Step 2: Narrow the Subject into a Topic Step 3: State the Objective Step 4: Make a Preliminary Bibliography Step 5: Prepare a tentative Working Outline Step 6: Take Notes Step 7: Prepare a Final Outline Step 8: Write a Draft Step 10: Prepare Final Copy STEP 1: SELECT A SUBJECT To select a subject for a term paper, ask yourself the following questions: • • • • • Am I interested in the subject? Is the subject appropriate for my class? Is the subject too broad? too limited? Is the subject manageable in terms of length and deadline for completing the paper? Is the subject likely to be covered adequately in books, journals, or newspapers? your answers should be YES to most of these questions. It is where the warmth of acceptance is present and the foundation of love is seen. When everything seems to be wrong, the family should be the one who makes it right. Nevertheless, families should be intact. Bonds are strongly held together and there is no sign of separation. Unfortunately, there are instances that a family is incomplete. The inseparable feeling is not felt. How come this happens? Are there any circumstances that a broken family can trigger for a child to be affected negatively? There are a lot of effects that could happen...

INTRODUCTION A ddresing the widespread poverty problem is the single most important policy challenge facing the Philippines. Not only is poverty high compared with other countries in East Asia, but also its reduction is so slow that the country has become the basket case in the region. Proposals peddled to address the poverty problem are plenty—and keep growing. At one end of the spectrum are proposals contending that the root of the problem is simply the lack of a respectable economic growth. Putting the economy on a high-growth path is prescribed as all that is needed to lick the poverty problem. At the...

...Poverty Reduction Strategy and Poverty Monitoring: Philippine Case Study By Celia M. Reyes and Lani E. Valencia* I. Introduction The overarching goal of development efforts is the improvement in the quality of life of the people. The Philippines is no exception. Being one of the nations who participated in the Millenium Summit in September 2000, it has committed to achieve 48 targets including eradication of poverty. In addition to international commitments, the Philippines has been working toward poverty reduction for decades. It has even included targets on human development and poverty reduction in its medium-term development plans. The growing consensus is towards a comprehensive approach to poverty reduction. Rapid and sustained economic growth is needed to improve the quality of life of the population; at the same time targeted interventions aimed at reducing poverty are needed to reach the very poor and marginalized sectors of the economy. With poverty reduction as main goal of the government, the demand for poverty statistics has become more important. Several poverty monitoring systems are being conducted both at the national and community level providing income and non-income based measures of poverty. These have become the basis for social and economic development plans and programs of national and local governments. The objectives of this paper are to examine the poverty situation in the Philippines and to assess the country’s poverty reduction strategy and policy...

...Poverty in the Philippines This term paper. We will tackle a topic about Poverty. All of us know Poverty but where the word poverty comes from? Who is the person behind this word? What is the reason why there’s poverty? It is because of the poor people/Urban people or because of the Corruption here in the Philippines? Is it because of the Unemployed people or is it because of laziness to find job that fits their skills? The word poverty comes from old French poverté (Modern French: pauvreté), from Latin paupertās from pauper (poor). The English word "poverty" via Anglo-Norman povert. There are several definitions of poverty depending on the context of the situation it is placed in, and the views of the person giving the definition. And Mahatma Gandhi once said that “poverty is the worst form of violence.” Today, more than half the population on Earth is living in poverty. Some people may think that poverty is being hungry and homeless, but poverty has deep roots spread throughout the countries and making it even more implanted in the people. The causes of poverty are several, and each country can have causes that differ from other countries. But still, the main causes of poverty can be narrowed down into three main ideas, social causes, political causes and economic causes. First is the social causes of poverty can be narrowed down to two main topics, overpopulation and education. Overpopulation, as defined by Fight Poverty organization is when a number of people live in a...

...better understand the Philippines’ current situation and where we were forty years ago: 1. There has been no major change in inequality in 1985 to 2009. Philippines’ income distribution has not worsened but it has not improved as well. 2. The poverty situation went down but the improvement was due to changing the methodology in calculating its percentage. However, NSO data says that the poverty incidence is growing and yet our MDG is to reduce poverty by half in 2015. 3. Employment situation as per NSO says that only 2.8 million are unemployed however, the recent survey conducted by SWS says 11 million are unemployed. ECOP estimates a good 77% are employed in the informal economy while DOLE estimates are at 45%. 4. Philippines’ poverty, unemployment and underemployment may be worse had there been no OFW diaspora. It has been discussed as well the economic history of the Philippines, what happened and what went wrong. During the 1950’s the Philippines experienced rapid industrial transformation and was considered second to Japan in Asia. However, in today’s economic situation, we are considered as a straggler. A lot of neighboring countries emerged and left the Philippines behind. It was mentioned that corruption, damaged culture and colonial mentality, and closed-economy were theories of inflation on failure to develop. The truth maybe a bit of each theory. Starting from Marcos and the succeeding Presidents, their Medium-Term Philippine Development Planning (MTPDP)...
