...Week 3: Leadership and Power Paper LDR/300 The Prime Minister’s Powerful Better Half Mini Case Ho Ching, the wife Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore’s current prime minister and son of a founding father of the country, is the Chief Executive Officer at Temasek Holdings; who according to the text, “was ranked 18th of Asia Most Powerful Business People and 24th of Forbes World's Most Powerful Women” (Hughes, Ginnett, Curphy, 2009). While this demonstrates the power capacity of Ho Ching as a leader; it does not establish the level of influence that she commands or her skills to apply influential tactics necessary to be able to modify followers’ attitudes and behaviors in the desired direction. In order to determine whether Ho Ching is an influential and competent leader or simply a positional leader; one must review and establish what are the sources of power that she possess, as well as her individual characteristics, and her capacity to apply the influence tactics to change the attitudes, values and behaviors of others. Ho Ching is a Stanford-educated electrical engineer, this in itself already demonstrates that Ho Ching is an intelligent individual, and intelligence is a commonly used characteristic to describe potential leaders. Furthermore, according to Nahavandi (2009), “It is clear that the complex task of leading requires a person with cognitive ability to remember, collect, and integrate information, analyze problems, develop solutions, and evaluate...

...of Leader Power and the Ethical Boundaries that Govern Their Use Eva Oyieyo Judith Risa Felice Renfro Oklahoma Wesleyan University The Five Types of Leader Power Leadership and power are closely linked. People tend to follow those who are powerful. And because others follow, the person with power is usually the leader. But leaders have power for different reasons. Some are powerful because they alone have the ability to give you a bonus or a raise. Others are powerful because they can fire you, or assign you tasks you don't like. Yet, while leaders of this type have formal, official power, their teams are unlikely to be enthusiastic about their approach to leadership. On the more positive side, leaders may have power because they're experts in their fields, or because their team members admire them. People with these types of power don't necessarily have formal leadership roles, but they influence others effectively because of their skills and personal qualities. Do you recognize these types of power in those around you – or in yourself? And how does power influence the way you work and live your life? In this paper, we will discuss the 5 types of leader power, what each means, how a leader uses each of the 5 powers and the ethical boundaries that should govern their use. One of the most notable studies on power was conducted by social psychologists John French and Bertram Raven, in 1959. They identified five bases of power listed below:...

...Economics Shaleka McClelland ECO/365 May 27, 2013 Tarron Khemraj Economics “Economics is the study of how human beings coordinate their wants and desires, given the decision-making mechanisms, social customs, and political realities of the society. (University of Phoenix, 2008, para.2 ).” In other words, economics is about making choices. It is not just about money and economizing, it is about weighing different choices or alternatives. Most choices involve money but most do not. Economics plays a role in peoples personal and organizational decisions every day. Important choices are how much time to devote to work, to school, and to leisure, how many dollars to spend and how many to save, how to combine resources to produce goods and services and how to vote and shape the level of taxes and the role of government. Economics also addresses the collective behavior of businesses, industries governments and countries. Economics is divided into microeconomics and macroeconomics. Microeconomics analyzes the market behavior of individual consumers and firms to try and understand the decision-making process of firms and households. It is focused on the interaction between individual buyers and sellers and the factors that influence the choices made by buyers and sellers. Macroeconomics study the economy as a whole and is concerned with problems of inflation, business cycles, unemployment, and growth. Law of Supply and Demand Microeconomics focuses on patterns...

...influence, power and leadership styles by using the concepts and theories as they relate to the study in the class. I then discuss the encounters, which I face directly or indirectly within my present or past employment. Lastly, I will discuss how will I use my personal experiences, along with what I have learned about motivating and leading others, in the future. Describe your own styles of influence, power, and leadership utilizing the concepts and theories presented in the text and video lectures. I am very much influenced by McClelland’s theory, which clearly states that regardless of our gender, culture, or age, we all have three motivating drivers, and one of these will be our dominant motivating driver. This dominant motivator is largely dependent on our culture and life experiences. This theory helps me structure my motivation and my well being. I use the following characteristics: Achievement | * Building a strong need to set and accomplish challenging goals. * I take calculated risks to accomplish my goals. * I like to receive regular feedback on my progress and achievements. | Affiliation | * Wanting to belong to the group. * We all want to be liked. Favors collaboration over competition. | Power | * I may desire to control and influence others. * I would like to win arguments. * I do enjoy competition and winning. * I would like to enjoy status and recognition. | As far as power is concerned. I prefer to base on personal power as described...

...The Connection between Power and Leadership Kevin Ralston Everest University What is leadership? What is Power? Is there a connection between the two? Leadership is defined in many different ways. One of the leading experts in management, Peter Drucker was said, “The only definition of a leader is someone who is a follower” (Kruse, 2013). Bill Gates once said, “As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others” (Kruse, 2013). The actual definition of leadership is the state or position of being a leader (McGraw-Hill, 2003). Power is defined as one person’s control over another person (Baumeister & Bushman, 2013). The idea of being in power is a strong influence on people’s behavior. It is addicting. Most people who have power seek to gain more power. Look at Adolf Hitler. He grew to power in Germany and decided he wanted more so he made a plan to take over the world. He was a powerful man but a ruthless leader which made people fear him instead of respect him. A good leader gains power through the respect of others. A great leader is an effective leader who uses his power to encourage and he gains the respect of others by being respectful toward those below him. There is a connection between power and leadership. If a manager is power hungry and treating others as his slave for his own gain then he is a bad leader. If a manager uses his power of authority to encourage his team to increase productivity so that they all look...

...Benjamin Genous DeVry University Week 6 Assignments –Case Study Management 303 1. Brief describe the five kinds of power available to leaders and/or managers. I. Reward power, means an employee believes they are going to get some type of reward for doing their job. The reward could be pay, days off, etc. The employee believes the reward will be coming from the supervisor. II. Coercive power is a supervisor intimidating an employee to do the work or they can be fired or demoted. This can be compared to someone having a power trip complex. III. Legitimate Power, does an officer believe that the orders being given are true even if they may be coming from a higher power that does not normally give out orders to the police. An example used is an officer receiving powers from the Chief of Police and the commanding officer follows through to make sure their officers are conducting the instructions. The officer believes in his commander as he works with them all of the time and although the Chief is the highest manager, the officer knows that the commander is the one who will be making sure follow through takes place. IV. Referent power is when one person has an attraction somehow to the person giving the power. The individual will basically do anything the person with power says because the attraction is so strong. An example could be a group of teens with one teen just trying to become one of the members and they tell him to jump off a bridge. The outsider...

...“Forget China, India and the internet: economic growth is driven by woman” The Economist, 12 April 2006 Until the late 1980s, women remained invisible as managers, and mostly few regretted their absence. But the last two decades of the 20th century saw rise of women in management. And ‘this is the first time in history that women have been working alongside men in the same job and the same companies, with the same levels of education, the same qualifications, and comparable ambitions’ (Adler and Izraeli, 1994). But, there are barriers which thwarts talented women from advancing to senior leadership positions. Women are generally considered politically naïve and someone who wields soft influential tactics such as joint action to gain power. This ‘old boys club’ thinking is supported by the cliché that ‘men are bad but bold, and women are wonderful but weak’. (Huczynski & Buchanan, 2013)This review sheds light on a woman’s journey from an executive to a managerial position in ABC. (ABC is India’s second largest IT Company, which provides business consulting, Software and outsourcing services). The review studies the barriers that impact her journey such as the phenomena: glass ceiling, the widespread stereotype that women lack ambition, aggressiveness, assertiveness and risk taking attitude. This review lays emphasis on the fact that an organization must use its best talent, irrespective of the gender...

...The Southwest Way: Leadership, Power, and Motivation When Herb Kelleher and Rollin King founded Southwest Airlines in 1971, their mission stated the “dedication of the highest quality of customer service delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and company spirit” (Smith, 2012). With that mission in mind, Herb Keller and Rollin King managed to make Southwest the only profitable airline in the United States (Smith, 2012). Southwest’s mission is not the only reason why the airline continues to grow. Without the way, Herb Kelleher former CEO of Southwest, had developed a particular leadership style, power base, and a set way the organization motivates its’ work force, the company would not be as successful as it is today. Leadership is “the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 377). When examining Kelleher’s leadership, he possesses two different leadership styles which both have similar characteristics. The first leadership style that Kelleher posses is a transformational leadership style. A transformational leader is a “leader who inspires followers to transcend their own self-interests and who are capable of having a profound and extraordinary effect on followers” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p 391). Transformational leaders tend to communicate high expectations, promote intelligence, and give personal attention by coaching. The second leadership style Kelleher possesses...

...Freedom, equality, justice and power are the foundation of leadership. Today's world is filled with diverse groups of people; they have different cultures, nationalities and personalities. Because of this diverse environment we deal with change very often, in the workplace, school and at home. John Maxwell once said, "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." A leader means someone who has ability to lead a group of people, someone who people follow and idolize. And leadership is one of the rare and precious human capitals, especially in today’s society. Without leaders to guide and shape decisions society, the world will be mess up. Leaders are usually respect by youth, people in same age, and elders, they may make some bad choice sometimes, but they still deserve these respect. By being a leader, a person can have many different options to take. People are not born like a leader, but the options they got through the growth make them became leaders. If people have quality to know what are freedom, equality, justice and power, they must became a good and effective leader soon or after. Freedom is to live without any shackles. People are born free; they have free to speech, write and think. “Freedom is not a matter of choice, it is a destined path, an undying yearning for the peace of one's soul until attainment.” (Churchill, 2003) Good leaders can give another people freedom while give themselves freedom. Free is the easy word to say but...
