Comparative Essay - the Book Thief

...Paige Ghesquire ENG 3UI – 05 Ms. Wright May 23, 2015 The Kite Runner: The Power of Words “The power of words, written or spoken, have life. They can change the world.” (search quotes). The power of words should not be underestimated. Liesel proves this to be true in the novel and the film The Book Thief. She uses words to develop relationships with her foster father, Hans Hubermann; Max Vandenburg, the illicit Jew in her basement; and her neighbours. In the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak there is much more relationship development compared to the film The Book Thief directed by Brian Percival. This consequently causes the theme of the power of words to be less prominent in the film. The novel The Book Thief develops the relationship between Liesel Meminger and her neighbours more than the film The Book Thief therefore minimizing the theme. First, Liesel and Rudy become best friends, “Insane or not, Rudy was always destined to be Liesel’s best friend.” (Zusak 48). Rudy introduced himself to Liesel as soon as she moved in, he developed a liking for her and they soon become best friends. Rudy used his charming, and sometimes insulting, words to win over Liesel. This develops the theme because it shows that even if one does not want to like someone, their words can change them into a likable person. Second, Liesel and Frau Hermann develop a relationship, “When she came and stood with an impossibly frail steadfastness, she was holding a tower of books against her stomach...

Tempest

...is the theme of power and control demonstrated through out the tempest. In “The Tempest” , power is demonstrated through various forms. Shakespeare presents the theme of power through the social power held by Sebastian and Antonio as they demonstrate the abuse of their power towards those they may deem socially lower. Shakespeare also presents power through Prospero’s magic and manipulation as he crafts his return to as the duke of Milan as well as his treatment of Miranda and Prospero. Prospero is a character that throughout the play consistently seeks to maintain and gain power, and as such has sought to regain power that was taken away from him in the form of his dukedom. His study in magic may have been the cause for this loss of control, however to some extent, magic has made sure he has maintained his power. The concrete nouns of “thunder” and “lightning” used as stage directions firstly demonstrate Prospero’s manipulation of the elements through his magic. This ties in with the theme of power as Prospero shows the extent to which his magic can reach. His manipulation of the elements is consistent throughout the play and portrays him as trying to play god in influencing nature, these nouns portray Prospero as a character to be feared as these nouns emphasises the wrath and power of Prospero’s magic. The clause “I made shake” reinforces how Prospero views himself and also how influential and fearsome his magic was. The pronoun “I” emphasises Prospero’s power further...

The theme of power is used in the Relationship of Petruchio and Katherina. It is used because, around the time that this play takes place; the men had more power over the women. This is shown in many ways throughout The Taming of the Shrew, one of which is during Petruchio and Katherina’s conversation. “Petruchio: Good Lord, how bright and goodly shines the moon! Katherina: The moon? The sun! It is not moonlight now. Petruchio: I say it is the moon that shines so bright.” (4.5.2-4) In this conversation, Petruchio is telling Katherina that it is the moon that is out and shining; however, Katherina, refusing to believe so, insists that it is the sun. Basically, Petruchio is telling Katherina that it is what he says it is, and is technically telling her what to think. Therefore, this is showing how Petruchio uses power over Katherina....

The Tempest Research Paper

...Often called William Shakespeare’s farewell to the stage, The Tempest is considered to be one of his greatest plays. The Tempest is not set in reality, but in a mysterious world that melded everyday people and material with a beautiful fantasia. The Tempest features many fantastic themes, three of them include power and control, man versus monster and colonization. Out of all of the themes in The Tempest, these three themes are the most prevalent. The theme of power and control mainly ensues within Prospero, himself. This is prevailing in the way he treats his servants, Caliban and Ariel. Prospero says many nasty things to Caliban such as, “Thou poisonous slave, got by the devil himself. Upon thy wicked dam, Come forth!” (I.ii.383-384) From...

Charlottes Web

...characters in “Charlotte’s Web”, Fern “Arable” and Mrs. Arable are two characters who are symbolic of their own themes: Inequality & Injustice vs. Power & Control, respectively. Fern “Arable” is the little girl who is introduced in the first few pages. Fern is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arable, and the sister of Avery “Arable”. The last names of the children are in parenthesis because Fern and Avery are not given proper last names in their introductions, unlike their parents. Fern’s purpose in the story “Charlotte’s Web” is to illustrate two important themes: Inequality and Injustice. Within her character development, Fern is shown as someone who feels that the world is unjust and unfair. She is also shown as someone who is not an equal being within her family, which is inferred when she isn’t given the proper title of a last name, whereas her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Arable, are given that respect. Fern isn’t presented as “Fern Arable”, she is merely Fern; a little girl. There are many examples in just the first few pages of “Charlotte’s Web” that show how Fern represents the themes of Inequality and Injustice. The illustrations by Garth Williams on page 2 show Fern pleading desperately with her father to spare the life of the runt piglet. Sometimes, pictures do speak louder than words, and Williams’s illustration shouts volumes of the power struggle Fern faces while trying to make the world a fair place. Furthermore, the language that is used on...

Power And Authority In The Truman Show, Directed By Peter Weir

...One of the main themes of The Truman Show is power and authority. The director, Peter Weir is able to develop these themes by using techniques such as dialogue, setting, and characterisation. There is also the motif of Christof being like God which runs throughout the movie. Peter Weir uses dialogue to develop the theme of power and authority in The Truman Show. “Look at that sunset, Truman. It’s perfect … that’s the Big Guy. Quite a paintbrush he’s got.” This line is spoken to Truman by his best friend Marlon when Truman tells him that he wants to leave Seahaven. Marlon tries to convince Truman to stay by emphasising the beauty of Seahaven. He refers to ‘the Big Guy’, which is normally slang for God when he is actually talking about Christof. Through this quote, Weir is able to show the audience that Christof is so powerful that some of the characters liken him to God. Weir does this in another quote which is spoken by Christof when he introduces himself to Truman. “I am the creator … of a television series.” Christof adds “… of a television series,” after announcing to Truman that he is the creator. Peter Weir uses the slight pause to show the viewer that Christof himself has a God complex....

Their Eyes Were Watching God Analysis

...Zora Neale Hurston’s novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, is heavily embellished with themes and motifs that contribute to it being an eccentric piece of work. The novel prompts insightful questions over whether or not love and independence can coincide and brings up themes of sexuality and power. One thought provoking aspect of Hurston’s writing is her frequent application of nature to the novel’s symbols and motifs. A great deal of the symbolism in the book is portrayed through nature; such as, the pear tree, the hurricane, and the horizon, which are all aspects of nature that Hurston utilizes. Along with nature, Hurston uses physical attributes as well. The roles of the pear tree and Janie’s hair aid Hurston in creating the significant themes...
