Power in Lydman & Associates (L&A)
Smita Mhatre has recently been recruited by Lydman & Associates for the position of Senior Manager. She has been given the charge of heading the Department of marketing. Malcolm, a top technology manufacturing company has approached L&A for a marketing strategy solution to launch their new product line. Malcolm requires the marketing strategy to be rolled out at the earliest in order to get a competitive edge in the market.
Anshuman Gupta, the Associate Vice-President (AVP) has oriented Smita about the project of Malcolm and has stressed on the importance of delivering the marketing strategy at the earliest. Smita needs to bring her marketing team to work as efficiently as possible. The team comprised of – 1. MBAs from prestigious institutes who possessed high intellectual knowledge 2. Individuals with work experience ranging from 5-10 years 3. Freshers out from private MBA colleges
She observes that there is a wide diversity in the team and brining the team together was a challenge. To add to the challenge, Smita was just 3 years senior to most of the team members and even younger to some team members who had 5-10 years of work experience. She received different kinds of responses from each group. Soon she realized that she was facing difficulties in influencing the team. While the freshers adhered to her, the MBA and the experienced set of team members didn’t comply with her. Smita was faced with a challenge of being able to deliver a marketing strategy to the client at the earliest and therefore needed the team to work cohesively.

The purpose of this essay is to establish how much power leaders need to be effective. Although effective leaders rely more on personal power than on position power, some position is important in order to get the job done. The amount and type of power required depends on the situation, whether the influence is upward, downward or lateral, whether goal congruence exists, the size and make-up of the group as well as the targeted outcome (compliance or commitment).
