...Formal Visual Analysis of Yamantaka Vajrabhairava Yamantaka Vajrabhairava is a sculpture of a buffalo-headed figure with multiple heads, hands and legs. Although the creature communicates an energy which may at first seem menacing because of its face and the objects either held in its hands or stomped underfoot, when one includes the image of the peaceful man surmounting him, one will realize that it is using this energy protectively rather than aggressively. Before I prove my argument, I am going to provide a more detailed description of the sculpture. This whole object is standing straight, communicating a sense of majesty at first glance. It is raised on a table with a pedestal, but it is as wide as the arm length of a 10-year-old child and should reach an adult’s chin if resting on the ground. Because it is huge in size, viewers need to go to both of its sides in order to be able to perceive every part of it clearly, but its front is more busier than the back, meaning that it is usually seen from the front. Although covered with a layer of paint in dark blue, red and gold, this sculpture is made of wood because its wood grain is fairly visible. Besides the buffalo face, this figure has six other faces in blue, red, yellow, white, grey and black. At the very top of Yamantaka’s head is the head of a peaceful, amiable man adorned with a crown and beautiful jewelry; the body of this man is not included in this sculpture. Its 34 hands are stretching out and holding a number of...

...Social Factors Society begins and ends with cheetahs. When blues legend 'Bare Foot D' remarked 'awooooh eeee only my dawg understands me' [1] he could have been making a reference to cheetahs, but probably not. While the western world use a knife and fork, the Chinese use chopsticks. Of course cheetahs cleary plays a significant role amongst the developing middle classes. Primarily cheetahs builds trust among the people. Society is powered by peer pressure, one of the most powerful forces in the world. As long as peer pressure uses its power for good, cheetahs will have its place in society. Economic Factors Our world is driven by supply and demand. We will study the Custard-Not-Mustard model. For those of you unfamiliar with this model it is derived from the Three-Amigos model but with greater emphasis on the outlying gross national product. Inflation cheetahs Clearly the graphs demonstrates a strong correlation. Why is this? Of course inflation will eventually break free from the powerful influence of cheetahs, but not before we see a standardised commercial policy for all. Many analysts fear a subsequent depression. Political Factors Machiavellian politics is rife. Are our leaders justified in pursuing and maintaining political power? Comparing international relations since the end of the century can be like observing...

...identifying three self-assessment tools; a food journal, exercise log and sleep log, along with providing rationale for the chosen instruments. I will also address the Transtheoretical Model (TM), which stages I have gone through and which stage I am currently in. These tools and stages along with a wellness diagnosis will help me to develop a personal health plan. The outcomes of the interventions will be discussed and will include personal achievements and success. Personal Health Assessment and Health Promotion Plan The definition of health is very subjective; it can vary from person to person. What one person might consider healthy another might consider being average. I define good health as a complete circle of one’s physical, emotional, spiritual and mental well-bring. Personal health assessment is a key building block in understanding your own health. Once there is an understanding one can make plans for improvement. According to Pender “a thorough assessment of health and health behaviors is the foundation for tailoring a health promotion-prevention plan” (Pender, Murdaugh, & Parsons, 2011, p. 89). Once my definition of health was clearly defined, I took a closer look at my personal health beliefs by completing the Health Beliefs Survey (Appendix A). I was not surprised to discover, I scored higher than normal for personal control of health and exercise. I scored below average on powerful others and chance. I look at these results and agree with them 100%. I do...

...Sleep is one of the richest topics in science today: why we need it, why it can be hard to get, and how that affects everything from our athletic performance to our income. Daniel Kripke, co-director of research at the Scripps Clinic Sleep Center in La Jolla, Calif., has looked at the most important question of all. In 2002, he compared death rates among more than 1 million American adults who, as part of a study on cancer prevention, reported their average nightly amount of sleep. To many, his results were surprising, but they've since been corroborated by similar studies in Europe and East Asia. Kripke explains. Q: How much sleep is ideal? A: Studies show that people who sleep between 6.5 hr. and 7.5 hr. a night, as they report, live the longest. And people who sleep 8 hr. or more, or less than 6.5 hr., they don't live quite as long. There is just as much risk associated with sleeping too long as with sleeping too short. The big surprise is that long sleep seems to start at 8 hr. Sleeping 8.5 hr. might really be a little worse than sleeping 5 hr. Morbidity [or sickness] is also "U-shaped" in the sense that both very short sleep and very long sleep are associated with many illnesses—with depression, with obesity—and therefore with heart disease—and so forth. But the [ideal amount of sleep] for different health measures isn't all in the same place. Most of the low points are at 7 or 8 hr., but there are some at 6 hr. and even at 9 hr. I think diabetes is lowest in 7-hr. sleepers...

...emotional care in the world but if we not sleep, we can't live an ordinary life and maintain health. For this crucial time, there shouldn’t be any disturb to get good sleep. There are various kind of sleep disorder such as insomnia, Sleep apnea or Narcolepsy, which are enemies of good night sleep. In this report, I would like to cover the importance of good, proper sleep to overcome various sleep disorders and why sleeping in the dark is crucial for human. In addition, the reason why I put this sub topic, why we should sleep in the dark room, because I’m the coward who can’t tolerate and sleep in the darkness. I desperately want to dig up the answer, how dangerous it is, to break my negative habit. First of all, Importance and purpose of sleep. Why human is sleeping? Many psychologists and sleep investors try to figure out why we sleep since ages ago. Basically, while we are sleeping, body start to repair cells and to strengthen the immune system and other crucial functions to live an ordinary life. But researchers have yet to discover any fundamental purpose of sleep. Is it to refresh the body? Frankly, muscles don't need sleep, just irregular periods of relaxation. Is it to refresh the mind? The brain get benefits from a good sleep but there is no agreement among researchers about what exact form that benefit takes. Normally, we have two cycles of sleep, one is described by rapid eye movement--the REM sleep. The other is called non-REM sleep. Humans generally take about 90 minutes...

...I could not sleep. I was ready and prepared to leave. I was done with my parents. Done with shouting, munching noises, and overall uncomfortableness. Staring at the ivory ceiling, I pictured myself with friends on the beach of Bali as the soft white sand tickles our feet. For the first time, I would go on a trip without my family. As I silently went over my packing list for the millionth time, I slowly fell asleep. Yes, goodbye to embarrassing family trips. Growing up in a second-generation entrepreneurial family, parental affection was an issue. With a father constantly traveling between continents and an overly strict mother, my childhood was not filled with warm embraces and bedtime stories. I was loaded with extracurricular activities since kindergarten, from piano to drawing classes to Chinese calligraphy. These were "jobs" to me where I was required to sit for hours on end, trying to fulfill my parents' expectations and bearing reprimands when I failed. Love was a distant word, and family vacations seemed meaningless because of the uneasiness that filled every moment. This time, travelling was different. With a flexible schedule, I was able to visit places that...

...7: States of Consciousness CHAPTER PREVIEW Consciousness is our awareness of ourselves and our environment. Conscious information processing enables us to exercise control and to communicate our mental states to others. Beneath the surface, unconscious processing occurs simultaneously on many parallel tracks. Our daily schedule of waking and sleeping is governed by a biological clock known as circadian rhythm. Our sleep also follows a repeating cycle. Awakening people during REM sleep yields predictable “dreamlike” reports that are mostly of ordinary events. Freud’s view that dreams can be traced back to erotic wishes is giving way to newer theories, for example, that dreams help us process information and fix it in memory or that dreams erupt from neural activity. Studies of hypnosis indicate that, although hypnotic procedures may facilitate recall, the hypnotist’s beliefs frequently work their way into subjects’ recollections. Hypnosis can be at least temporarily therapeutic and has the potential of bringing significant pain relief. Hypnosis may be an extension both of normal principles of social influence and of everyday splits in consciousness. Psychoactive drugs also alter consciousness. Depressants act by depressing neural functioning. Although their effects are pleasurable, they impair memory and self-awareness and may have other physical consequences. Stimulants act at the synapses by influencing the brain’s neurotransmitters. Their effects depend on...

...public therefore not only does it account for the majority of the company’s sales, but it also helps set it apart from other sleep aids. The market for items that help you sleep is massive with over the counter things in pill & liquid form, nasal sprays used for when you are sick, prescriptions from your health care physician, vaporizers, humidifiers that emit steam, and even surgeries to open your nasal passages; however, breathe right sets itself apart by being an FDA approved product that is drug free and is easily applicable for its users. Also relating to their success is their ability to adapt to the different cultures when they promote their products. As they experienced with marketing the product here in the United States vs. marketing in the United Kingdom, everything plays a part including packaging. Where the dark packaging worked in the United States because many Americans were able to connect that with sleeping and rest, the packaging in Europe had a negative impact with customers because they connected it with being enclosed in a dark space. Taking this into consideration, they changed the package into a lighter, brighter packaging which helped their sales. Continuously researching the consumers and customers in order to provide tailored market has proved positive for the company’s image and their sales. 2. As a brand, how powerful is...

...Hardman 11/8/2012 Psych 111 Dreaming A dream is a succession of images, sounds, ideas and emotions that we experience involuntarily while sleeping. Everyone has dreamed at least once in their life, even if they don’t remember it. As a matter of fact everyone experiences six to eight dreams per night, and out of the eight hours of sleep we’re supposed to get each night, two of them are spent dreaming. People aren’t the only animals that can dream. Actually, every mammal is known to have dreams at night, and even some birds. Dreams usually occur during the “rapid eye movement” stage of our sleep, when brain function is high, almost as high as when we’re awake. We most likely remember the dreams that we have during the REM stage because the brain is functioning at such a high rate, but we also dream during other stages of sleep. Those dreams are just harder to remember because the brain is not functioning at the level that it would be during the REM stage. As we all know, dreams can range from exciting and pleasurable, to scary and terrifying. I know that I personally have woken up terrified from a dream, and didn’t want to go back to sleep because I didn’t want to encounter what I was dreaming about again. Usually, we can’t control what we dream about. However, it is a proven fact that a person can induce lucid dreaming if they work at it. Lucid dreaming is when the person who is dreaming is aware of the fact that they are dreaming, and can therefor control their dreams...

...most effective but least humane; violence. The maintenance of power over others in society is highly dependent on the ability of those in control to distort and abuse language. This is highly evident in our civilization, not only modern society but going back thousands of years. Both powerful individuals, and groups of people and establishments all use language as a means of control, and through deception such propaganda allows power to be maintained. In George Orwells Animal Farm, we see the pigs use their intellectual ability to take control over “Manor Farm”, and turn it into “Animal Farm”. Animal Farm is promised to be carefree and easy, Old Major tells the animals “almost overnight, we could become rich and free”. This is a powerful statement, used to entice and excite the animals, which is soon contradicted with “it might be in a week or in a hundred years”. However due to Old Major’s skilled ability to manipulate language he quickly follows up with “justice will be done!” to ensure he hasn’t lost his audience. Again, in the novel manipulation of language is used, as in the case where the pigs are able to influence their “comrades” because they are inferior. Education is a very powerful tool to create power, when leaders deny citizens to education it gives them the power to manipulate rules and regulations to suit themselves....

...The purpose of the research: Cartwright decided to carry out a more extensive study involving a very personally relevant suggestion prior to sleep to see if the topic of the suggestion would then appear in the person’s dreams that night. Cartwright argued that if you were to make a pre-sleep wish about something that was personally relevant to you, it would be more likely to enter your dreams in some way. Research Methods: The participants of the study were 17 paid college students. 10 of which were male and 7 of them were female, all claimed to be good sleepers. All 17 participants slept 2 nights in the sleep laboratory to get used to their surroundings. Next the participants were given a deck of 70 cards, each card containing 1 personal adjective. The participants were the asked to sort the cards into seven categories, ranging from 1 (“least like me”) to 7 (“most like me”). After they finished they were then given another deck identical to the one before, and asked to sort this deck as they would for the person...

...night. With recurring dreams, the message may be so important and /or powerful that it just will not go away. The frequent repetition of such dreams forces you to pay attention and confront the dream. The dream is trying to tell you something. Such dreams are often nightmarish or frightening in their content, which also helps you to take note and pay attention to them. Recurring dreams are quite common and are often triggered by a certain life experience or situation or a problem that keeps coming back again and again. These dreams may recur daily, once a week, or once a month, but whatever the frequency, there is little variation to the dream. It usually points to a personal weakness, fear, or your inability to cope with something in your life – past or present. The repetitive patterns in your dreams can reveal some of the most valuable information on yourself. It may point to a conflict, situation or matter at work or at home, a situation in your waking life that remains unresolved or unsettled. Some urgent underlying message in your unconscious is demanding to be understood. Dreams are strongly associated with sleep. They may occur in all stages of sleep including the REM sleep and NREM sleep. It is implied that dreams are prevalent during the REM sleep, and the REM dreams can be recalled more easily than the NREM dreams. A human adult usually spends a total of 1% to 2 hours each night in REM sleep by spreading it over several periods. Thus, we may experience several...
