... Modern South Asia: History, Culture, Political Economy Bounded by the Himalayas and the Indian Ocean the vast South Asian subcontinent contains a teeming population that constitutes a fifth of humanity. Boasting one of the world's oldest civilizations it has had a tumultuous modern history. In the living museum of the subcontinent's history there are paradoxes galore. A common heritage and environment notwithstanding, South Asia presents a picture of social complexity, economic disparity, cultural diversity and political heterogeneity. This course will examine the formation and the shifting contours of the rich mosaic of modern South Asia. A semester's study permits an analytical rather than a comprehensive survey of the society, economy and politics of the subcontinent. Beginning with a rapid overview of India's premodern and early modern history, the bulk of the course will concentrate on the changes and continuities during two centuries of British rule from the mideighteenth to the midtwentieth centuries. A short concluding segment will be devoted to postindependence developments. Primarily a lecture course, time will be available at the end of each class for questions and discussion. It is important to read ahead in order to participate in some of the major debates in South Asian history and historiography. The following books have been ordered for purchase at the College Bookstore: Required: 1) Sugata Bose and Ayesha Jalal, Modern South Asia: History,...

...What are the global ‘North’ and ‘South’ and why they are increasingly unrelated to geographical locations? Like many other concepts within the social sciences, globalisation is a highly debated and controversial issue with a diversity of opinions ranging across a broad spectrum. At one end of the spectrum, there are those who view globalisation as the source of many of the major social problems currently affecting developing countries. At the other, are those who view it as a process that will dissolve boundaries between nations and promote global unification. Similarly, definitions of the terms ‘Global North’ and ‘Global South’ are just as varied with the term ‘globalisation’ also carrying many different and often contrasting meanings. According to Modelski, Devezas and Thompson (2008, p.13), globalisation is not a new concept but rather, diachronic, or ‘a process in time’. The authors viewed globalisation as a historical process, the understanding of which required tracing it far back into the past (Modelski et al. 2008, p. 13). However, Heywood (2007, p. 143) suggests, that because globalisation refers to such a wide range of things, e.g. policies, strategies, processes or an ideology, it may be concluded ‘slippery and elusive’ understanding of globalisation arises from its involvement in so many different areas of academia and the extensive and continuing discussion therein surrounding its properties. Regardless of different views on the definition and scope of globalisation...

A. Akanni and A. A. Adams Department of Agricultural Economics, College of Agricultural Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University, P.M.B. 2002, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Nigeria Received: December 27, 2010 / Published: July 20, 2011. Abstract: Cashew nuts market in south western Nigeria is characterized by price fluctuations through space and time. This may be linked with the large number of market intermediaries who act between the primary producers and the markets. The sample for the study comprised 250 cashew nuts marketers who were randomly selected from the five south western states of Nigeria. About 76 % of the cashew nuts marketers had up to secondary school education and 86% of them had 15-year marketing experience and below. Pricing efficiency of the marketers was highest in Ogun state with average efficiency level of 85.1 % and least for Oyo state (68.9%). In all, 720 tonnes were transacted in the region with 206 marketers handling maximum of 2 kg per month per individual. Gini-coefficient estimate of 82.3% implied that there was a concentrated market for the cashew nuts. To further increase the pricing efficiency of the commodity it is necessary to reduce the costs incurred on various physical aspects in marketing system...

...Expected Outcomes 8 Planned Timetable 9 Conclusion 9 References 10 Introduction South Asia accounts for over 17 percent of the total world’s population. Although, there are varying definitions of the South Asian region, for the purposes for this research, the focus would be on three countries which are Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka. India, the second most populous country in the world and the tenth largest economy is expected to bypass the US economy by in the next three decades along with Germany, Italy, France and other economic giants. The fact is that western markets are quickly saturating and have realized a significant potential for their growth...

It will discuss whether it was advisable for the South African government to increase government spending during the 2006 and 2007 financial periods. The mains views that will be discussed will be based on how an increase in government expenditure affects the aggregate expenditure curve, what is the result of this on the GDP gap and also its effect on the inflation rate. Economic theories prove that an increase in government expenditure shifts the aggregate expenditure curve upwards which increases total aggregate expenditure and real GDP. I disagree...

...Invictus, directed by Clint Eastwood, is the true story based on the life of Nelson Mandela during the first year of his term as President of South Africa in 1995. This essay will focus on Invictus and critically analyse leadership knowledge, skills and behaviours displayed within the movie. The essay will use the transformational leadership theory to relate to these qualities and outline how they can influence culture within an organization. Further, the essay will highlight how the elements of leadership, including emotional intelligence, teamwork, communication, patient centered care, and education, impact on nurses and on patient outcomes. Invictus focuses on the captain of the Springboks South African rugby team, Francois Pienaar, and Nelson Mandela, who after serving a prison sentence from 1964-1990, was released from prison due to the fall of Apartheid, which eventually resulted in his election to the Presidency in 1994 (von Tunzelmann 2013). Apartheid, meaning ‘the state of being apart’, was a system of racial segregation in South Africa, enforced through legislation by the National Party governments, under which the rights, associations, and movements of the majority black natives were limited and Afrikaner minority rule was maintained (Merriam-Webster 2014). As the new President, it was evident that Mandela yearned for the people of South Africa to unite, rather than being divided into two groups, the Afrikaners and the black natives. Mandela believed that the country would...

...| | | Experiential Analysis A Reflective Structured Essay Introduction A successful organisation is built on the communication that develops between its constituents (Dietz & Den Hartog 2006). Encouraging efficient communication within any organisation can prove a difficult task, especially when faced with the complexity of a diverse workforce. The organisation being considered is a small accounting company (‘The Company’) located in Zimbabwe, South Africa. Due to its ‘multiplicity of traditions and skin tones’ (Brand South Africa 2011), South Africa has been portrayed as a ‘Rainbow Nation’ since the end of the Apartheid era. When diversity is not managed and monitored carefully, differences can lead to highly counter-productive communication dilemmas. Two fundamental aspects of diversity will be discussed: Firstly, cultural differences are common throughout The Company and have proven to be an issue of emotional and economic importance. Five of Hofstede’s (1994) dimensions of culture can be used to explain the reluctance of employees from different countries to effortlessly integrate their personalities and ideas within The Company. Power distance, individualism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity and long-term orientation will be analysed in terms of their affect on interpersonal communication...

...Problems and Perspectives in Management, Volume 12, Issue 4, 2014 Emmanuel K. Oseifuah (South Africa) Activity based costing (ABC) in the public sector: benefits and challenges Abstract Peter Drucker (1986), in “Management: Tasks, responsibilities, and practices” states that business enterprises and public-service institutions, are organs of society which do not exist for their own sake, but to fulfil a specific social purpose and to satisfy need of society, community, or individual. To achieve the above objectives, managers of these institutions must plan, control and make decisions about the resources entrusted to their care. A key element of efficient organizational decision making is to use reliable information, both operational and managerial accounting data for analysis and decision support. This can be achieved by using activity-based costing (ABC) method. The underlying premise of ABC is that resources are consumed by activities to produce outputs or products and services (US General Services Administration, 2006). It focuses on the allocation of indirect costs to products and services, which was traditionally done on arbitrary basis. ABC is useful in two situations: areas with large and growing indirect and support costs (Krumwiede, 1998a; Becker, Bergener and Räckers, 2010), and areas with a large variety in products, customers and processes (Cooper, 1988a, 1988b; Groot, 1999). The unique characteristic of public sector organizations as overhead-intensive...

There is talk of region-wide FTAs, and there are east-Asian initiatives on financial and monetary cooperation. But grand visions for Asian regional blocs are not achievable. Regional economic integration is most developed in east Asia, but only because of manufacturing supply chains linked to global markets. South Asia is the most malintegrated region in the world. And east and south Asia are much less integrated in finance than they are in trade and FDI – due to highly restrictive national policies governing financial markets. Asia’s existing FTAs are “trade light”. They are largely limited to tariff cuts, but have barely tackled non-tariff regulatory barriers in goods, services and investment, and are bedevilled by complex rules of origin requirements. An APEC FTA initiative has gone nowhere – entirely predictable given such a large, heterogeneous grouping. An east-Asian or a pan-Asian FTA, by discriminating against third countries, would compromise regional production networks linked to global supply chains. Moreover, huge economic gaps and enduring political differences will stymie...
