Although I indicated my desire to pursue a pre-professional emphasis in medicine, I enjoy learning about social injustices and how to manifest solutions to solve these issues. The combination of Chicano/Latino Studies and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention courses come close enough to describe my ultimate goal of serving low-income communities. By actively participating in the academic settings, I will grow intellectually whereas the diverse student body of USC will help me develop my interpersonal skills. In addition to taking advantage of the university’s rigorous courses, I intend to participate in a wide variety of service projects and student organizations in order to push myself out of my comfort zone; I find experiences more impactful

...Takako Hirokawa, Noah Finkelstein, and H. J. Lewandowski† Department of Physics, University of Colorado Boulder, Boulder, CO 80309 (Dated: March 4, 2014) In response to national calls to better align physics laboratory courses with the way physicists engage in research, we have developed an epistemology and expectations survey to assess how students perceive the nature of physics experiments in the contexts of laboratory courses and the professional research laboratory. The Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey for Experimental Physics (E-CLASS) evaluates students’ shifts in epistemology and affect at the beginning and end of a semester. Also, at the end of the semester, the E-CLASS assesses students’ reflections on their course’s expectations for earning a good grade. By basing survey statements on widely embraced learning goals and common critiques of teaching labs, the E-CLASS serves as an assessment tool for lab courses across the undergraduate curriculum and as a tool for PER research. We present the development, evidence of validation, and initial formative assessment results from a sample that includes 45 classes at 20 institutions. We also discuss feedback from instructors and reflect on the challenges of large-scale online administration and distribution of results. I. INTRODUCTION Laboratory courses offer significant opportunities for engagement in the practices and core ideas of science. Laboratory course environments typically have apparatus, flexible...

...required: The Personal Statement and the Study/Research Proposal. These essays serve very different but complementary purposes. Unless noted, the following information comes straight from the Fulbright Web site. THE PERSONAL STATEMENT (1 Page) The following information is applicable to both Study/Research and ETA applicants: The Personal Statement should be a narrative giving a picture of you as an individual.  Remember, applicants are not interviewed on the national level. The Personal Statement is your opportunity to “talk” about yourself and to tell the committee more about how you came to this point in your life and where you see yourself in the future.  There is no single “right way” to approach the Statement; rather candidates will consider what they think is important for people reviewing the application to know about them. The Statement can deal with your personal history, family background, influences on your intellectual development, the educational and cultural opportunities (or lack of them) to which you have been exposed, and the ways in which these experiences have affected you.  Also, you may include your special interests and abilities, career plans, and life goals, etc. It should not be a recording of facts already listed on the application or an elaboration of your Statement of Grant Purpose.   It is more of an autobiography, and specifically related to you and your aspirations. Adhere to the following format: • Statement length is limited...

Communication Opinion Paper

...communication is a part of everyone's daily lives and is practically impossible for it to be avoided. With that in mind, since communication plays such a big role in our success in our professional and personal lives, it is important that everyone knows how to communicate effectively in order for there to be a shared understanding of the information that is being communicated to avoid any consequences or misunderstandings. Learning to become a skilled communicator requires learning the elements necessary for effective communication. The elements of the communication process are; sender/ receiver, encoding, decoding, message, channel, and feedback. However, we all know that individuals communicate differently and convey their messages differently according to their audience or environment. For example, if an instructor is communicating through small talk his or her tone and vocabulary would differ from communicating through informational talk. The same goes for when an individual communicates with someone they are close to, such as their friends or co-worker. Even though the tone and style of communication may be altered to fit the audience, the process of communication has to stay the same to be effective. Learning how to become an effective communicator will make health care professionals be able to gain trust in a reluctant consumer and be able to handle cultural differences among patients as well. Overall, this will make their employment more possible and help them build...

University Health Services: Walk-in Clinic

...University Health Services: Walk-In Clinic Evaluation of The Triage System Implementation ------------------------------------------------- Background and Introduction It had been 1 year after University Health Services (UHS) of Harvard implemented the triage system to improve its quality of service. During pre-triage system, the clinic got a lot of complaint from its patients mainly about the waiting time between sign-in and treatment as some patients (22%) had to wait more than 35 minutes to make first consultation with a nurse. In some cases, patients had to spent more than 55 minutes just to wait for a prescription renewal. Additionally, it was also reported that some patients cancelled their visits to the click due to long expected wait. Patients described the Walk-In Clinic as cold, inefficient and impersonal. Although the last statement could be debatable as the walk-in clinic is not intended as a personal and exclusive health services. Service evaluation identified that some procedures in pre-triage had contributed to the bottleneck and duplicate services which had caused longer waiting time for the patients.
