The disease I believe should be the focus of the next “Centers for Disease Control and Prevention media health campaign” is Prediabetes.
What is Pre-diabetes? In the article Prediabetes, it states that, “Prediabetes is a “pre-diagnosis” of diabetes—you can think of it as a warning sign. It’s when your blood glucose level (blood sugar level) is higher than normal, but it’s not high enough to be considered diabetes” (Hess-Fischl, n.d). My three reasons are number of people with prediabetes, prediabetes in Teens, and what to do when a person is diagnosed with prediabetes.
In all around the world there are many people who are diagnosed with prediabetes. These people who diagnosed with prediabetes are at higher risk of having type 2 diabetes. The higher rate of people who are diagnosed with prediabetes is American Indians/Alaskan Natives …show more content…
She went to the doctor for something different and that day the doctor sent her to get some labs done. She went to get the labs done and few days later she went back to the doctor and the doctor told her that she had prediabetes. Since diabetes runs in my mother’s side family my sister thought that probability it was genetic. The doctor explained her that just because some of the family members had diabetes it didn’t mean that she was going to get if from them. My sister said that the doctor told her that she was diagnosed with prediabetes because of her body weight. Since my sister is overweight, that was the main cause for her to be prediabetic. According to the article, Diabetes on the Rise Among Teenagers states that, “teenage obesity and overweight rates had leveled off in recent years and that teenage rates of high blood pressure and high cholesterol had not changed greatly, it found that the percentage of teenagers testing positive for diabetes and prediabetes had nearly tripled to 23 percent in 2007-8 from 9 percent in 1999-2000.” (Rabin,

Organzitional Change

...an effort to contain cost, disease management programs employ nurses, dieticians, and physicians to provide diabetic education, resources, and incentive programs as a collaborative effort to assist members with this chronic disease (Edwards, 1999). The United States Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 25.8 million individuals of all ages have been diagnosed with diabetes. This chronic disease is the seventh leading cause of death. Medical treatment for a diabetic is twice as high as it is for a non-diabetic patient. The United States Department of Health and Human Services estimated that in 2007 medical treatment for diabetics cost $174 billion dollars (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2011). This paper will provide documentation of a declining disease management program and the development of a change within the organizational program. The goal of the change will provide patient, physician, nurse collaboration, diabetic education, and, assistance with self-management to close gaps in care (Amundson, O'Connor, Solberg, Asche, Woods, Parker, & Crain, 2009). Mercy Care Management is a large integrated health care system with a self-funded insurance plan. Fifty percent of the annual net is spent on members with chronic disease. Diabetes is one of the top chronic disease categories cost drivers. Since the inception of the program, the cost of care has continued to move in an upward trend. Thank you! =) In America, the fact that fast food restaurants are located at every corner many people becomes obesity leading to huge risk factors. The various issues of unhealthy living lead to multiple life threatening diseases, such as diabetes. When people hear the news that they have been diagnosed with diabetes, it makes them feel frightened. In 2011, statistics show that in United States 25.8 million of children and adults has diabetes (American Diabetes Association, 2012). American Indians and Alaska natives have a higher percentage of adults with diabetes than other ethnicities (Collazo-Clavell et all. 2009). Diabetes is a serious life-long illness caused by high level of glucose in the blood. This condition is when the body cannot produce insulin that is located in the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that moderates the blood level. Diabetes affects the process of how the body uses blood sugar (Collazo-Clavell et all. 2009). Glucose is significant since it is “the main source of fuel” (Collazo-Clavell et all. 2009). There is no cure for diabetes but there are ways to lower the risks. Although diabetes is a disorder, it can also lead to other factors such as heart attack, kidney failure, or death. A person with diabetes has to maintain a healthy lifestyle including eating the right food, exercising, controlling their blood sugar level, and be optimistic. Diabetes...

Childhood Obesity

...Childhood Obesity Shakia Bennett ENG 122: English Composition II Marsh Bechwith-Howard April 15, 2012 Childhood Obesity: Whose Fault is it? The Ashford library, ebooks, and newspaper articles are where the sources on childhood obesity came from. When doing research on childhood obesity, nutrition and parenting were some of the main reoccurring topics of childhood obesity. This paper will focus on unhealthy and healthy eating habits of obese children, and the effects of parenting towards childhood obesity as well as ways to overcome childhood obesity. In the United States there has been a rise in childhood obesity, but whose fault is it? Some parents blame fast food restaurants such as McDonalds, saying their food is unhealthy and the portions are too big. However, on the first part the blame for childhood obesity should be on the parents. Although fast food restaurants do paly a small part in childhood obesity, it is up to the parents to determine what they allow their children to eat. Parents should stop blaming fast food restaurants for childhood obesity when healthy eating habits should be enforced at home. Childhood obesity is a rising serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. Approximately 15 percent of U.S. children, ages 6–11, and 16 percent of U.S. adolescents, ages 12–19, are obese (Encyclopedia of Special Education, 2006). Childhood obesity occurs when a child is above the normal weight for his or her age and height. Obesity appears...

The article goes on to state that according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), “about 26 million individuals in the U.S. or 83 percent of the population have had a diabetes diagnosis (p. 6). Unfortunately this number will only begin to keep climbing and affect future generations to come. Professor Nam Han Cho wrote in a report on diabetes that “if current demographic patterns continue, more than 592 million people (worldwide) will be affected with diabetes within a generation” (Brass, 2014, p.7). Diabetes can be divided up into four categories including the following: Type 1 DM, Type 2 DM, gestational diabetes, and pre-diabetes. This paper will discuss the aspects of Type 1 diabetes. Self-Management in Chronic Illnesses: a Concept Analysis

...Self-Management in Chronic Illnesses: A Concept Analysis Dianne Rinehardt Chamberlain College of Nursing NR501: Theoretical Basis for Advanced Nursing Practice November 2015 Self-management in Chronic Illness: A Concept Analysis Globally, the human species is experiencing longer life-spans. As the number of persons with extended lifespans increases, so does the prevalence of those living with chronic illnesses. With the inception of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010, there has been a paradigm shift in the focus of healthcare from treatment to prevention. The origin of this paradigm shift occurred when traditional provider-directed/patient compliant approach failed to produce the outcomes that were expected (Udlis, 2011). Transforming healthcare from a treatment modality to one of prevention assumes that each person will be actively engaged in the prevention of chronic illnesses. Dorothea Orem’s self-care and self-care deficit nursing theory is based on the premise that people are naturally inclined towards self-care and that nursing should be focused on identifying and correcting any self-care deficits. Orem defined self-care as, “care that is performed by oneself for oneself when one has reached a state of maturity that is enabling for consistent, controlled, effective, and purposeful action” (Orem, Taylor & Renpenning, 2001, p 149). Orem’s self-care and self-care deficit theory is directly applicable to the concept of self-management...

...Effects of Exercise on Diabetes Exercise in the Treatment and Prevention of Diabetes Western Governors University Abstract Article Larose J; Sigal RJ; Khandwala F; Prud'homme D; Boulé NG; Kenny GP. (2011 January). Associations between Physical Fitness and Glucosylated Hemoglobin in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetologia, 54(1), 93-102. Retrieved May 17, 2012, from MEDLINE database. 20953579 Background Information Exercise and physical activity has shown to be a significant factor in the management and treatment of diabetes. What is unknown is how benefits from physical activity directly correlate to glucose control as manifested in low glucosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in diabetic people. The study aims to prove that the decrease in HbA1c is a result of greater aerobic fitness and strength in patients that are performing aerobic or anaerobic exercise. Secondly, it is related to the changes in strength and aerobic fitness that are performing cardiovascular exercise and resistance training. Review of Literature The purpose of the article is to assess the correlation of reduced HbA1c to physical activity. It is hypothesized that this reduction is related to the changes and increase in aerobic fitness and strength in diabetic people who are engaged in aerobic and anaerobic exercise. The result from the study showed that the link between the changes in glucose control during exercise training is not that high nevertheless; physical activity...
