...Investigating the presentation of speech, writing and thought in spoken British English: A corpus-based approach1 Dan McIntyre a, Carol Bellard-Thomson b, John Heywood c, Tony McEnery c, Elena Semino c and Mick Short c a Liverpool Hope University College, UK, b University of Kent at Canterbury, UK, c Lancaster University, UK Abstract In this paper we describe the Lancaster Speech, Writing and Thought Presentation (SW&TP2) Spoken Corpus. We have constructed this corpus to investigate the ways in which speakers present speech, thought and writing in contemporary spoken British English, with the associated aim of comparing our findings with the patterns revealed by the previous Lancaster corpus-based investigation of SW&TP in written texts. We describe the structure of the corpus and the archives from which its composite texts are taken. These are the spoken section of the British National Corpus, and archives currently housed in the Centre for North West Regional Studies (CNWRS) at Lancaster University. We discuss the decisions that we made concerning the selection of suitable extracts from the archives, the re-transcription that was necessary in order to use the original CNWRS archive texts in our corpus, and the problems associated with the original archived transcripts. Having described the sources of our corpus, we move on to consider issues surrounding the mark-up of our data with TEI-conformant SGML, and the problems associated with capturing in electronic form the CNWRS...

...educational establishment that does not use it. Computers are becoming a more and more important within education as both a learning tool for students and for keeping records of all individuals at the school. Computers allow students to access more information more easily and the introduction of the internet means that this information is available to hand 24/7. Whether this is a good prospect or not is something that is debated frequently. For every factual and accurate piece of information that can be found on the internet, there are ten false ones. This has lead to a demand for school based websites and computer software that students can use without the risk of being fed false information. Computers allow students to collect this data quickly and efficiently and learn skills such as finding relevant information and producing it in a way that can be read by others. As most students will...

...Level 2 in Computing, now going to view my project on what I have achieved with studying these units in the last few months. My project will involve two assignments using the Excel application and two with Power Point. A) What did I decide to do for my Excel project? The two pieces of evidence that I am producing in Excel are two spreadsheets that will comprise the following: 1) A spreadsheet for an event that I organised while I was working at the Royal Bath Hotel as a Conference Supervisor. A social evening event for staff to get to know one another outside the work place. I liaised with contractors and suppliers in arranging the food, drink and to check the feasibility for a band and DJ via the club manager. A rough data input form was produced, a document of how the spreadsheet was being designed and what information was needed to process the assignment. 2) The second spreadsheet is an invoice for Conferencing and Banqueting Supplies for the Events Department at the Royal Bath Hotel with authority by the De Vere Group. As a Conference Supervisor I organised supplies for our Conference Rooms, to improve our services and to compete with other 5 star hotels. Every three months this invoice was sent to De Vere Headquarters for it to be approved. B) Why did I use this application? The Excel software for the event project has allowed me to calculate an average discount for supplies, on how much I was within budget and the Total Profit made for the...
