Stop! Put your hands in the air! Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd was an Oklahoma outlaw during the 1930’s. He robbed several banks in Oklahoma and the surrounding states during the Great Depression. Growing up in poverty lead Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd to live a life filled with shoot outs, bank robberies, and killings. His ruthless time was cut short when he was shot and killed by two FBI agents. During the dark days of the Great Depression, an outlaw by the name of Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd emerged into a life of crime. Pretty Boy Floyd moved to Oklahoma later after his birth where he grew up in extreme poverty. Due to The Great Depression, Floyd had to find an escape from his impoverished path. He came into Ohio were he robbed numerous banks until he was caught by law officials. Charles deserted Ohio and journeyed towards Kansas City, Missouri. Upon his arrival, Floyd blended with several other outlaws and adopted the machine gun as his personal trademark (Britannica). Floyd’s time with his fellow outlaws was cut short when he was nearly captured by police. After nearly being apprehended in 1931, Floyd headed back to Oklahoma to seek Shelter (Britannica). While suppressing in Oklahoma, he gained the name of “Robin Hood of the Crookson Hills”. In return for being sheltered, Floyd would buy food for the people that generously hid him while he was being tailed. People of Oklahoma admired Floyd because they felt like he was doing the banks justice. “In 1931 and 1932, Floyd robbed so many banks in Oklahoma that the bank insurance rates doubled” (The Carnegie Library). Floyd and Miller robbed several banks together during the late l920’s and early 1930’s. The two were accomplice until Miller was killed in 1931 in Bowling Green, Ohio (History). After Miller’s death, Floyd headed back to Kansas City where he murdered a federal agent during a raid. After this murder, Floyd became known as a national criminal. Floyd rapidly headed back to Oklahoma where he pursued shelter. The residents of Oklahoma never turned Floyd in because they perceived Floyd as doing the banks justice. After Floyd left Oklahoma, he headed back to Kansas City with friend Adam Richetti on June 17,1933. Their goal was to save their colleague Frank Nash from being imprisoned (FBI). Floyd is widely known because of his aid in the Kansas City Massacre. Floyd and Richetti had shot out with the two FBI agents, that had Nash imprisoned in the parking lot of the Union Station (FBI). In the process of trying to help Nash flee from the agents, he was shot and killed along with the two FBI agents.
