The two concepts of governance I’ll be looking are China and Japan. Prince Shotoku of Japan, who lived from 573 to 631CE was part of the mighty Soga family. He served as the prince during his aunt’s reign, Empress Suiko. There he issued the “Seventeen- Article Constitution, which was basically a code of conduct or morale which was done on Chinese based reforms. China’s governance on the other hand were based upon excerpts from Emperor Taizong. These excerpts were written in 648CE, near the end of his ruling. In Prince Shotoku’s “Seventeen Article Constitution”, the most important article is “harmony”. Shotoku used these “seventeen articles” as a way to promote Buddhism as the main religion and to reinforce he ideal of absolute power, control …show more content…
If the ruler is pure, people will respect and admire him. They have to be respectful, show kindness and have compassion. Emperors are most of the time didn’t have access to information outside of their palace. A wise emperor knows which person is right for which job. They’ll only be give the role if they are skilled enough to work. Another excerpt is to welcome advice, Emperor Taizong, for example, set up various way for so that has access to information outside of his palace, and so that he can listen to advice from the people under his ruling. A foolish emperor on the other hand wouldn’t go that far, they would reject any objections made against them. Flatterers and slanderers are dangerous. They cheat simply due to the fact they think other will get richer or gain honour before them. They get closer to higher bureaucracy by using sweet word and doing whatever they want. A ruler maintains their character throughout peacefulness and frugality. If the emperor goes off course, pampers himself with women, travel music etc., labour will have to increase to satisfy the emperor’s needs which then leads to dissatisfaction by the people. Armor and weapon are a countries tools for violence. Military cannot be used to its fullest extent at a particular time nor can they be eliminated. Starting with harmony. Quarrel must always be avoided, and harmony must be valued. The three treasures, which are Buddhist Law, Buddah and the (Buddhist) priesthood should be given respect and admiration as they are the salvation for all living things. Always listen to your sovereign’s commands for not obeying them has dire consequences. They are like gods and so should be listened to. Higher officials should make examples of themselves and make themselves role models. If they are not behaving disorderly, so will the inferiors. Be impartial when it comes to the outcome of cases or problems. They must not get influenced by power or money and treat the poor and wealthy as equal with one not be inferior than the other. Reward the people who do good and punish who do evil. Every man has their own work allocated. If corruption takes place, problems arise. If wise men are trusted, they get praised for the good work they do. Higher officials must attend court’s early in the morning and be the last ones to leave. If one leave early, work is left incomplete. Faith is the root of good and right. Have faith in everything you do for if you have faith in the lord, anything can be done. Let us have opinions. Our right can be someone else’s wrong and their right can be our wrong. Don’t argue with their views, arguments or opinions as they are different

The Queen

...and his pledge to modernise Britain, but he promises to respect the Royal Family. Three months later, Diana, Princess of Wales died in a car crash at the Alma Bridge tunnel in Paris. Blair's director of communications, Alastair Campbell (Mark Bazeley), prepares a speech in which Diana was described as "the people's princess". Blair gives his speech the next day and the phrase catches on. Within the next few days after Diana's death, millions of people across London display an outpouring of grief at Buckingham and Kensington Palaces. Meanwhile, the Royal Family are still at their summer estate in Balmoral Castle. Diana's death sparks division among members of the family, in which they observe that since Diana was divorced from her husband, Prince Charles (Alex Jennings) a year earlier, she was no longer a part of the family. Diana's funeral arrangements were thus best left as a private affair of her noble family, the Spencers. Charles argues that the mother of a future king cannot be dismissed so lightly, while the Queen authorises the use of an aircraft of the British Royal Flight to bring Diana's body back to Britain. In London, flowers pile up before the palace railings, which forces the changing of the Queen's guard to use another gate. British tabloids become inflammatory about the lack of a statement from the Royal Family. Charles leaves no doubt that he shares Blair's views about the need for a statement. As the Royal Family's popularity plummets, Blair's acceptance rises...

Machiavelli's the Prince

...The Prince, written by Machiavelli, was a guide for all the rulers of his time who wanted to become major powers and to find all the solutions to their political problems. In his book, Machiavelli mentions a great amount of key points that guide rulers to the road of success. One of the key aspects that Machiavelli talks about is fate and how it effects the decisions of a ruler. The following paragraphs will discuss how human affairs are governed by fate, and how fate can be contested. During Machiavelli's time, it was commonly thought that events were ruled by fate and by God only. Not only that, but men could do nothing to stop or protect themselves from those events. Machiavelli did believe in fate, but he did not believe in the fact the fate controlled all events that occurred to mankind. If that were so then princes would rule by chance. This is proven when Machiavelli states I am not unaware that many have held and hold the opinion that the events are controlled by fortune…cause of this, they would conclude that there is no point in sweating over things, but that one should submit to the rulings of chance. (Machiavelli, pg.79) Machiavelli argued that fate controlled one half a person's life but the other half was governed by the people themselves. Machiavelli strongly suggests that princes are fortunate when fate and time are in harmony with their procedures, but things fall apart when things begin to change and the princes do not attempt to adapt to the changes. Machiavelli...

Advice for Manager

...Advice for managers: Intrapersonal Skills Achieve and Maintain Confidence, Focus, and Positive Self-image Decreasing Self-Oriented Perfectionism Work on your self-esteem, and try to stop the automatic thinking that sets your sights so high that your efforts can never measure up. It is OK to be hard on yourself on occasion, but be sure to take some time to be proud of your successes as a manager - and as a person. Reflect seriously about how you perceive yourself. Note your own negative and positive self-impressions. Write down what you like about yourself, what your strengths are, the people to whom you are important, and why you are important to them. Also, keep track of your negative perceptions and try to figure out why you took that particular issue so seriously. Maybe it wasn’t so bad after all. Explore why you should be proud of yourself and review this list often. Keep a journal of your thoughts, moods, and daily activities. Observe your automatic reactions to events at work and how you feel about yourself during daily life. If you make what you see as a horrendous mistake and feel like the lowest, lamest, most despicable worm on the earth, then write down the event, how you feel about yourself, and how you interpret the situation. Next, consider the situation from other perspectives and write these thoughts down as well. Follow these steps to gain new insight about your perceptions: - Do a serious reality-check: Are other people thinking as scathingly about you? If...

Rhetoric of the Tao-Te Ching

...contrasting in relationship to literature, a number of pieces of can qualify. In particular, the idea of leadership is arguably one of the most written about topics with regard to comparing and contrasting. Throughout history, it can be argued that the majority of successful societies have been based upon effective divisions of leadership. Accordingly, in their pieces of literature, The Tao-te Ching and The Qualities of the Prince, Lao-tzu and Machiavelli have sought to convey a more complete and concrete understanding of their respective definitions and duties of a ruler (leadership). The theme of political leaders and their intricate relationship with society indeed validate itself within both texts. However, both Lao-tzu and Machiavelli approach this issue from almost entirely opposite positions, though sharing minute similarities. Lao-tzu appears to focus the majority of his attention on letting problems or situations take their course, and consequently good would prevail. On the contrary, Machiavelli advocates the necessity for a successful leader, or prince, to take control of his deeds, and the skills or qualities necessary to maintain power. Since both writers propose a question as to what is in essence the same dilemma, effective leadership, it becomes almost natural literary etiquette to contrast the two in an effort to better understand what qualities a prosperous leader must possess. Despite each author’s contrasting approaches to rhetoric, they agree that a ruler should...

Health Hazards in the It Profession

...Health Hazards in the IT profession When you tell someone you are in the IT profession they usually come back with something like “oh so you get to sit around all day playing on a computer!” The truth is there are lots of risks with “sitting around playing on a computer”. Being at a desk and in front of a computer can be just as hazardous as being a construction worker or a mover for a moving company. There are health hazards that go along with sitting all day. Blood clots from lack of movement, the lighting of the computer screen which cause headaches and eye strain. With a busy work environment, often time there is no time for a nice long lunch hour which leads to grabbing something quick and usually not the healthiest on the menu. This is just to name a few of the problems with being an IT. It’s hard to believe an industry such as Information Technology can actually be hazardous to your health. Did I mention stress? Although there are a lot of physical issues that come with the IT profession, I would like to focus on the stress of the IT profession. It was not long ago that I worked in an office environment and had no idea what it took to be an “IT person”. I was one of the many that complained about how long it took to get and IT person to look at my computer to see what was wrong with it. Until now, I had no idea. With the tighter budgets caused by the economic strain, there has been a problem with understaffing in the IT field. Unfortunately, understaffing...

Chilean Mine Collapse

...News Article Paper This article is about Prince Harry. He allegedly took nude photographs in Las Vegas during a trip. This article is discussing what happened during his trip, and whether he will be reprimanded once he returns home. He is the prince of England, and also a captain in the British Army Air Corps. There are a lot of speculations made in the article. Author’s Position The author’s position in this article is one of assumptions. He seems to be trying to make it seem as though Prince Harry will be in a lot of trouble upon his return to England. Stating that he brought “shame” to the British military. He also makes comments like “Harry seems to be having a blast in the photos, one displaying a pool table that Ministry only hopes really was used for a game of strip billiards.” Support The author uses past incidents with Prince William as support in the article. He also uses quotes from citizens of England, and Us Magazine. These are a long shot at best. The Royal Family did not comment on the incident. Nor did Prince Harry. Therefore, there is not much solid evidence used by the author as to whether or not the prince will be reprimanded upon his return. Reliability This article does not seem to have much reliability. It is overwhelmed with assumptions and over dramatizations. The article assumes that because he is a prince he will have consequences to pay for his actions. The article also has quotes from both the author, and citizens. Neither...

...Josh M Darling 9-27-13 MGT386-002 Diary 3 1.) What did you do this week? /What Happened? This week I stopped posting flyers about my $10 business. I received more business calls than I really had time for. I had a lot of people asking about the flyers and generated quite a bit of business from people I already knew with dogs. I had a total of 10 customers this week and had to buy a new $7 bottle of dog shampoo. 2.) What did you think about this week? I felt like this second week went well because I had 2 return customers along with 8 new contacts and generated a weekly profit of $93 ($100-$7 for the shampoo). Time was a big issue this week; I am taking 28 hours and have little free time. It was hard scheduling appointments because of the nature of my business. Going to people’s houses and performing a service generally calls for you to be on the client’s time, the same goes for most service industries. 3.) What will you do next week? Next week I will try and make more time for the business. I will not make any more attempts of advertising until I come up with a better way to schedule appointments, and or just leave the rest of advertisement up to WOM. I will also again follow up with the clients I had this week asking if they would like for me to come and perform my service again or at least at a bi-weekly rate. I also plan on incorporating nail clipping next week and making new prices. (10$ basic wash, $20 deluxe wash, groom, nail) 4.) Did you...

Graduation Speech

...Standing before you on this day reminds me of my 8th grade graduation. I sat on the stage listening to three of my peers give beautiful speeches that had nothing to do with any of the feelings I felt. The speakers harped on the nostalgia of leaving a school they had been at for nine years; I had only been there for three. They spoke on how they would miss seeing the same faces everyday and that they feared the days ahead – however, I was excited. When I thought about the future I saw all the things waiting for me to come and try. I saw the new friends I would make, the papers I would write, the softball games I would win, the clubs and activities I would join, the boy who would be my first kiss, and the wonderful people I would meet who would inspire me more than I realized at the time. Graduation is a time to look at what the future has in store for each of us. It is a time to take a look at what path our lives are going to take once the caps and gowns are taken off and we are thrust into an unknown future. Changes next year will vary greatly for each of us, they will come in the form of new environments, lifestyles, and schedules. And these changes will bring an abundance of questions. Will I be happy? Will I fall in love? Will I have a family? Will I be happy five or ten years down the road? Will I make a difference? Will I make a difference in my community? In my country? In the world? ...Sleeping Beauty Once upon a time there was a Queen who had a beautiful baby daughter. She asked all the fairies in the kingdom to the christening, but unfortunately forgot to invite one of them, who was a bit of a witch as well. She came anyway, but as she passed the baby's cradle, she said: "When you are sixteen, you will injure yourself with a spindle and die!" "Oh, no!" screamed the Queen in horror. A good fairy quickly chanted a magic spell to change the curse. When she hurt herself, the girl would fall into a very deep sleep instead of dying. The years went by, the little Princess grew and became the most beautiful girl in the whole kingdom. Her mother was always very careful to keep her away from spindles, but the Princess, on her sixteenth birthday, as she wandered through the castle, came into a room where an old servant was spinning. "What are you doing?" she asked the servant. "I'm spinning. Haven't you seen a spindle before?" "No. Let me see it!" The servant handed the girl the spindle ... and she pricked herself with it and. with a sigh, dropped to the floor. The terrified old woman hurried to tell the Queen. Beside herself with anguish, the Queen did her best to awaken her daughter but in vain. The court doctors and wizards were called, but there was nothing they could do. The Prince

...In The Prince, by Machiavelli, he discusses the nature of the prince, how he should arise to power if not inherited by blood, and the rules in which to rule his domain. He primarily wrote this for the sake of the Medici family who would later transcend history as an infamous banking family that produced not only a queen but two Pope’s. The contents of this book were extremely controversial and were not published until after Machiavelli’s death but to this day it still holds to some degree influential power. As a Prince one must appear to have righteous qualities such as mercy, kindness, faithful, etc. but that is only the outward appearance that he must give off. The Prince should always have the capabilities of doing evil, he must be able use these qualities without hesitation when the need arises. For example, in the case of generosity versus parsimony, he claims that being too generous will lead to his depreciation as well as loss of his own major resources, which will be needed to be made up for in taxes. While on the other hand, either discontinuing or limiting your generosity will not be good for your reputation. So the Prince would rather be more frugal than generous. Several other guidelines that an excellent Prince must follow is not that of what laws to pass or who to execute but that of the emotions. The Prince, Machiavelli claimed needed to be feared yet loved all at the same time. Fear keeps his people in place but taken too far and the people begin to hate you...
