McCandless sadly died on his journey, but touched many people’s lives through his similar ideals to the transcendentalists. Throughout his journey to Alaska he displayed his principles of non-conformity, dislike of materialism,and self-reliance. Although he had a strained relationship with his parents he always found ways to stray away from the normal ideals of society by never taking titles, changing his name, breaking laws and leaving his old life behind. McCandless often emphasized his hatred for money as he burned it donated every thing he had to charity, and carried only what he needed.
