...occurs in teenage girls, but it can also happen to teenaged boys and adult men and women. People with anorexia nervosa are obsessed with the thought of being and remaining thin. They lose a lot of weight and are terrified of gaining it back. Anorexia nervosa isn’t just a problem with food or weight; it’s an attempt to deal with emotional problems (Siegel 1). To completely understand and comprehend this horrific disease, you must consider the media that includes pro-anorexia websites that include negative support for suffering anorexics, celebrities in Hollywood, and teenager’s peers. Background information and the effects are also vital to the cause of this disease. If we look into any teenager’s experiences throughout middle school and right through high school there are all sorts of negative pressures: to drink, smoke, use drugs. But one of the least visible one of them is all is unforgiving demands to be thin and appear as the famous stars to in Hollywood. Teenager’s peers may put pressure on the so called ‘friends’ to view pro-anorexia websites in order to visualize how they want others to look and for unhealthy support in the cause of this appalling disease. There are many visible signs of a possible case of anorexia nervosa. A great number of suffering anorexics attempt to hide from anyone who will try and stop them or send them away to treatment. If no one helps, that person will die from the...

The story of Quaker Oats’ success is one of a company led by a strong management effectively growing in the face of increasing competition and economic cycles through internal and inorganic growth. Its non-beverage businesses were growing only at 1% in real terms. It had a 10% growth target set, and that target was accomplished through acquisition strategy. To maintain this growth rate the management felt that Snapple presented highly compatible product offering. Overall, the company has used a growth through acquisition strategy and diversification. Diversity is necessary to secure the whole company’s survival. In addition, Quaker Oats thought they had the resources to make Snapple expand internationally. Gatorade Acquisition - A Huge Success Purchase of Gatorade in 1983 (as part of the Stokely-Van Camp purchase) catapulted Quaker to the top of an untapped beverage segment that, to this day, dominates 80% of the market. This deal was vital to Quaker’s long-term success. The company attributed success to its global sales and marketing team. Quaker acquired Gatorade in 1983 for $238M. I did not understand that the pro-forma was a projection of your decisions that you were making in the current quarter. Had I closely analyzed my Pro forma statement in quarter two I would have seen that I had set my demand for my sales team at zero and overspent in production. My revenue was not enough to cover the cost of production and overhead. Just by doing the simple math using my Pro-forma sheet I could have quickly assessed that the Revenues of +$990,900 would not cover the Cost of production-$576,338 and an excess capacity cost of -$491,524. The details come from Japanese magazine Mac Fan, which were summarized on Tuesday by Macotakara. The report claims Apple's next-generation iPhone may sport a 1,920-by-1,080-pixel 5-inch display packing in 440 pixels per inch. It was claimed that Apple plans to make both sides of the screen as "thin as possible." That could allow the company to promote the "iPhone 6" as the first "phablet" able to be operated with one hand. The appeal of one-hand operation was already something Apple already focused on when it released the iPhone 5, sporting a larger 4-inch display, in 2012. That was an increase from the 3.5-inch display size found on all previous iPhone models. ...

...the operating margins shrink in an attempt to acquire 20% market share by 1990. To accomplish this, MCI will need to infuse huge capitals into their business. As per the pro forma statements, MCI would need significant amounts of capital to finance their plans. The figures range from $890 million in 1984 to $2.76 billion in 1987. Looking back at history, MCI has been known for issuing stock and debentures/convertible debentures. To finance their forecasts, MCI will begin by selling $481 million in common stock in 1984 the same way it did in the past. The share price is currently $47 per share and MCI needs to capitalize on the high value while it can. From 1985 to 1989, MCI will sell convertible debentures. A Convertible debenture is a type of loan issued by a company that can be converted into stock by the holder and, under certain circumstances, the issuer of the bond. The debentures allow investors to turn them into stock while at the same time allow MCI to issue more debt. Thus, each year from 1985 to 1989, MCI can take on more debt while converting older ones. The additional cash will provide for MCI’s growth plans and allow them to compete in a dynamic market. Pro Forma Statements Pro Forma statements are helpful in estimating future inflows and outflows. In any growing company, pro forma statements are vital in constructing future plans for growth. For MCI, we made assumptions based off growth in the case book. Also, we assumed that the economy was...

...We purchase products and services almost everyday of our lives. As consumers, we need to make the best decisions, so we don’t unnecessarily spend more money. I am going to discuss two products that my family and I have purchased in the past. The first product is an iPhone case/cover, which costs less than $25 and the second product is a MacBook Pro laptop, which costed well over $200. Although these products are of a different value, the purchasing process can be quite similar. When I purchased my iPhone 5, my next step was to buy a case to keep the phone protected from any accidental damage. Since I was at the Apple store at the time of the purchase, I decided to look at some of the cases that were offered. I liked the Otterbox cases because they seemed to be the most effective in protecting the phone. I knew that my screen would have a much better chance at survival with this case on, if I happened to drop it by accident. Although the Otterbox cases were made with great quality, the prices were a bit extreme ($50-$75), and I knew that once I walked out of the store and over to one of the cell phone case kiosks, that I may find the same case if not better for a cheaper and more affordable price. So that is exactly what I did. I went to the kiosk and started looking at some cases, which looked appealing, and when I asked the guy how much he sold his Otterbox cases for, he replied $40. Eventually, I was able to bring the cost down to $30 with no tax after some bargaining, but I...

...Introduction To The Computer The type of computer that we are choice for this assignment is notebook computer. A notebook computer is a battery or AC-powered personal computer generally smaller than a briefcase that can easily be transported and conveniently used in temporary spaces such as on airplanes, in libraries, temporary offices, and at meetings. A notebook is an extremely lightweight personal computer. Notebook computers typically weigh less than six pounds and are small enough to fit easily in a briefcase. Notebook computers generally cost more than desktop computers with the same capabilities because they are more difficult to design and manufacture. A notebook can effectively be turned into a desktop computer with a docking station, a hardware frame that supplies connections for peripheral input/output devices such as a printer or larger monitor. The less capable port replicator allows you to connect a notebook to a number of peripherals through a single plug. Notebooks usually come with displays that use thin-screen technology. The thin film transistor or active matrix screen is brighter and views better at different angles than the STN or dual-scan screen. Notebooks use several different approaches for integrating a mouse into the keyboard, including the touch pad, the trackball, and the pointing stick. A serial port also allows a regular mouse to be attached. The PC Card is insert able hardware for adding a modem or network interface card to a notebook...

...The MacBook Pro is a line of Macintosh portable computers introduced in January 2006 by Apple Inc., and now in its third generation. Replacing thePowerBook G4, the MacBook Pro was the second model, after the iMac, to be announced in the Apple–Intel transition. It is also the high-end model of theMacBook family and is currently produced with 13- and 15-inch screens, although a 17-inch version has been offered previously. The first generation MacBook Pro appeared externally similar to the PowerBook G4, but used the Intel Core processors instead of PowerPC G4chips. The 15-inch model was released in January 2006, a 17-inch model in April, both of which received several updates and Core 2 Duo processors later in the year. The second model, known as the "unibody" model, has a more tapered design and a casing made from a single block of aluminum. It debuted in October 2008 as the 15-inch MacBook Pro and the 13-inch aluminum unibody MacBook. The following January brought the design to the 17-inch model, along with the built-in battery that joined the rest of the MacBook Pro line in June, including the 13-inch model which Apple absorbed into the MacBook Pro line. Subsequent updates brought upgraded Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduced Intel'sThunderbolt technology. Apple released the third generation of MacBook Pro in June 2012 as a 15-inch screen size only. At the same time, slightly updated versions of the previous 13- and 15-inch unibody models were announced that will...

...Jane English states that from the liberal point of view the main argument of abortion is that its the woman's body and she can do whatever she wants with it. English then goes to refute this argument by saying “You cannot do as you please with your own body if it affects other people adversely.” (English, 128). As a counter argument to pro-abortion choice English then gives the argument that a fetus is not a person so therefore it would make it okay to kill the fetus. This is where English then uses the example that animals are also not a person but yet it still wouldn't be right to do as we please and kill animals. English then implements the counter argument that animals are killed for sport, food, and experimentation, just as long as...

...3 Components To A Successful Concept July 17, 2008 The only way to create a financially successful restaurant, in any market, is to have sales great enough to cover your costs--including your development costs. Today’s blog topic is my follow up to last week’s thoughts on seeing the unseen. Sometimes coming up with a concept seems like magic, but generally it is a result of a lot of research because seeing the unseen is more than hocus pocus. There are three components to examining a market and coming up with a successful concept: Economic Feasibility The economic feasibility is first looking at demographics and psychographics (sometimes values and lifestyles), some of which is statistical and some of it is pure observation. As an example, if the per capita income for San Francisco and Berkeley are the same, what really separates the two neighboring cities? The answer: Lifestyles. In San Francisco, you see the car of choice being BMW’s and Mercedes Benz, in Berkeley it would be Saabs and Volvos; for clothing in San Francisco it is probably Armani and Zegna, in Berkeley it is Levis and Patagonia. San Francisco values urban cool environments and in Berkeley it is sustainable and responsible kitchens. Everything works but the kind of restaurant you would do in Berkeley may not be as successful if done in San Francisco, or Kansas City or Atlanta. Part two of the economic feasibility is looking for the “best demonstrated” performance. Examine your trade area to see...

...Analyzing Pro Forma Statements FIN 571 September 11, 2014 Introduction This paper is the analysis of pro forma financial statements. Pro forma statements are forecasted or projected financial statements as a result of financial planning. The financial statements are based on the inputs and assumptions such as percent of sales model in which most of the entries vary directly with the level of sales. The attached excel spreadsheet includes pro forma statements for the next five years. This company decided to invest in the purchase of new equipment to help increase sales. The resulting projections are the focus of this paper. Analysis of pro forma statements will determine if the company requires any external financing to support its planned initiatives. Assumptions supporting each line for forecasted statements This paper covers a five year plan with the basic assumptions for the pro forma statements that the equipment purchase initiative will increase sales by 12% for the first two years, and then 5% for the next three years. The cost of sales including purchases, production and labor, and ending inventory will vary with sales, while beginning inventory comes from prior year ending inventory. Depreciation will increase by $40K for the additional equipment in year one. Fixed assets will not vary from year to year, except for $200K increase in equipment expected in the first year to support sales growth. Retained earnings for the prior year comes from previous year, and...
