...occurs over a bony prominence. A pressure ulcer develops as a result of prolonged pressure to these bony prominences such as the heels and sacrum. They develop once there is a combination of pressure and shear. This pressure is known to cause skin breakdown. In addition to being complex, pressure ulcers are prevalent, deadly, and costly to treat. Rosenberg (2002). One of the strategies used around health care facilities for ulcer prevention is repositioning every 2 hours. It is evidence-based that turning a patient every 2 hours will help prevent pressure ulcers from developing. During one f our monthly SGC meetings we identified this to be a big problem in our unit. As a team we analyzed different methods to correct this problem. We came up with a plan and addressed any possible barriers we would need to consider. In the following paper we will discuss the changes we plan on implementing and how we will address influencing factors for change within our unit. As one of the chairs for my units shared governance council I must address any existing issues in our unit. An issue that was brought up to our attention by our patient outcome facilitators was the fact that the rate of our unit acquired pressure ulcers had increased dramatically over the past quarter. We decided to bring this important matter to the meeting and open it up for discussion...

...Technology Solutions for Human Services Paper April Fraley September 9, 2012 BSHS/352 Don Iliff Technology Solutions for Human Services Introduction With every occupation barriers are encountered and the human services occupations are no different. There are many different areas in the human services occupations such as funding, services, planning and empowerment where barriers can and are encountered. Where funding and services are in the forefront and often looked at when changes are made, empowerment is placed on a back burner and sometimes even forgotten completely. Empowerment is an important part of the human services profession and therefore the barriers that affect empowerment associated with human services need to be looked at and addressed. Barriers Within human services empowerment is a key aspect of helping individuals seeking help. Human services professionals work with individuals in need of help that the individual is unable to achieve on his or her own. Where human service professionals have an array of information and guidance available to him or her, clients that seek out assistance from human services professionals do not. ...Water Control: Flooding Issues in Houston, Texas The purpose of this paper is to analyze and discuss the flooding problems in Houston, Texas. As a part of this analysis, this paper will assess the economical, political, and legal implications of Houston’s flooding. It will also explain the relationship that psychology has to environmental preservation, and will create a solution to the issue at hand. In the process of proposing a conceivable solution, this paper will discuss the economic, political, and legal barriers of the solution, how they can be overcome, and why this solution will be successful. Flooding Issues in Houston, Texas Houston, Texas is home to over two million individuals, and is the fourth largest city within the United States of America. It is located in the Southeastern part of the state of Texas, and sits roughly 50 feet above sea level. Houston is known for its famous nickname of the Bayou City, as it is home to over 2,500 miles of manmade rivers. These manmade rivers (bayous) are the city of Houston’s way of containing and channeling rain water to the ocean. This alternative drainage system was a much needed installation because of the city’s position, as compared to the sea level (Bayou Preservation, 2012). Currently, Houston suffers from severe flooding issues (i.e. flash floods, urban floods, river and bayou floods), and depending upon the area of town, the probability of high and slow moving floodwaters increase. As the city’s population...

...Select Strategy www.selectstrategy.com 1 877 HR ASSET 1 877 472 7738 Improving Performance by Breaking Down Organizational Silos Understanding Organizational Barriers Restructuring initiatives have become common rather than exceptional occurrences. Some are successful, others not. Once new organizational structures are in place, they typically have their limitations. Virtually every organizational chart or model, in medium to large sized companies, divides employees into business units and/or departments. This is necessary to focus skills and pool common interests and resources to achieve specific company objectives. There is however, a downside that is often not catered for – a silo effect which impacts performance. In this paper, the silo effect will be defined, the dangers presented by silos will be briefly outlined, and an approach and suggestions to reduce these silos will be discussed. The Silo Effect Defined Silos may be defined as groups of employees that tend to work as autonomous units within an organization. They show a reluctance to integrate their efforts with employees in other functions of the organization. The effect has the propensity to exist throughout a Company, or between subsidiaries within a wider corporation, resulting in division and fragmentation of work responsibilities within the organization. Departments and business units can fragment into even smaller silos based on strong personal bonds, and areas of commonality...

...Running head: PROBLEM SOLUTION: CLASSIC AIRLINES Problem Solution: Classic Airlines University of Phoenix January 21, 2008 Problem Solution: Classic Airlines “Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders” (Kerin, 2006). Marketing is a fundamental key to any businesses success and involves determining the needs, wants and desires of consumers and satisfying them to the best ability. Classic Airlines is the world’s fifth largest airline they command 375 jets serving 240 cities with about 2300 flights per day for about a quarter of a century. Classic Airlines has around 32,000 employees. They earned about $10 million on about $8.7 billion in sales. With the uncertainty about flying Classic Airlines and the industry has seen this affect stock prices, Classic Airlines in particular has seen a 10% decrease in their share prices over the past year. Classic Airlines is also dealing with low employee morale, and the consumers’ confidence also seems to be declining as well. (Anonymous, 2007a) According to their financials for the past year, Classic Airlines would have been losing money if it were not for the $15 billion aid package passed by Congress for the airline industry (Kaye, 2002), which is resulting in a $22 million Income Tax Provision...

...Electronic health records (also known as ‘e-notes’, EMR or EHR) have commonly replaced the conventional paper records used in medical facilities. EHRs are a longitudinal electronic record of patient health information generated by one or more encounters in any care delivery setting. Included in this information are patient demographics, progress notes, problems, medications, vital signs, past medical history, immunizations, laboratory data, and radiology reports”. Some of the basic benefits associated with EHRs include being able to easily access computerized records and the elimination of poor penmanship, which has historically plagued the handwritten medical chart. This technology can offer a more consistent method for open communication among physicians, nurses, labs and other clinical staff without relying on handwritten notes stored in a single-location, electronic health records can help with the time it takes to treat someone. Electronic health records have provided a solution to a range of health care procedures, have offered cost savings and benefits, and still have greater potential for improvement through future efforts. It is evident that the EHRs have shortcomings that are commonly noted and targeted, but they have solved many more problems inherent in previous systems, they are the ideal path for development and improvement for patients and healthcare providers. Electronic health records have allowed healthcare organizations to provide quality care all of its...

...structured, take on functions and responsibilities, and are continuously evolving. As a member of a nonprofit board that is in dyer need of change in order to survive, I chose to devote this paper to the best practices of creating successful organizational change. Although change is never easy, there are many successful organizations, which have learned to deal with and adapt to the demands of the environment through engaging in organizational change. Stephen Michael, a professor of management at the University of Massachusetts, has created a model, which outlines the necessary steps for organizations to take to effectively adapt to the environment. MODEL OF ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE The first component of Michael’s model is an environmental analysis. The environment poses external demands on an organization, such as opportunities and threats. Opportunities are the trends or possible future prospects, which can aid an organization in carrying out its mission and achieving its goals. For example, if a grant became available that my nonprofit organization qualified for, the grant would be considered an opportunity. On the other hand, threats are the problems and constraints imposed by the external environment that an organization is affected by, such as an economic recession. Along with the problems or opportunities posed by the external environment, an organization must be able to account for its internal, structural strengths and weaknesses. “To respond effectively to the challenges...

...With this rapid growth of patients who are seeking health care, it is inevitable that wait times to see a healthcare provider have lengthened. For this reason, an intervention for improvement of the existing flow process must be implemented to enhance the quality of care that is provided to the patients as well as improve patient satisfaction. Lean technique was implemented by eliminating any nonvalue-added activities in the current workflow, decreasing wait times, creating a quicker throughput, and improving patient satisfaction and quality patient care. Throughout this process, the information that was gathered for the lean technique solution made the trial days of implementing lean technique successful in urgent care. A second solution was developed as a backup plan, consisting of having a dedicated nurse practitioner and a...

...to continually optimize their investments, only those marketing efforts that create real value and add to organizations profits deserve marketing investments. But in order to recognize the value added by the marketing efforts marketing managers should be able to measure marketing performance and tie it up to the organization’s overall financial performance. As a response to this growing problem, marketing managers have come up with a range of methods and framework to effectively measure and communicate the value created by marketing efforts. This paper explores some of these measures and the managerial implications for marketing managers in Nepal. Background The different frameworks put forward by marketing managers in order to measure marketing performance significantly vary in both method and reasoning. While one school of thought has argued that the value created by marketing should be quantified and apparent in the financial performance of the company, another school of thought has focused on the qualitative measures to analyze the value added by marketing activities. While barriers do exist in calculating the quantitative measures of marketing performance, Kotler & Armstrong (2012) point out that the quantitative measures, specially return on marketing...
