Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Mathematics is one of the most challenging subject areas being taught to our learners. It is composed of simple to the most complex skills which test the individual’s mind. It starts from basic numeracy to logical thinking and eventually to higher-order cognitive skills.
The people in the academe particularly Math teachers are trying their best to make the study of Mathematics be simpler and easier to the learners. They even promote positive attitude towards the subject for them to absorb and appreciate the benefits it would bring to a person.
Quality mathematics education should enable pupils to form a positive and appropriate image of mathematics (UNESCO), 2012. This should be realized in order to produce quality learners who are fully abreast with competencies in Mathematics. Despite the best efforts being exerted by teachers, there are students who still find problems and difficulties in mastering learning competencies included in the subject. These skills are necessary because these may appear in various Math-related subjects in college. It is critical that many Filipino learners encounter problems and difficulties on the competencies that they must learn. The manner of acquisition and attitude significantly affect
