...Lab Research Report 1: Procedures in the Physical Sciences Rhoda H. Jefferson Professor Cassie Prisco Introduction to Physical Science November 2, 2013 The specific challenges to making direct measurements in the fields of astronomy, chemistry, physics, or earth science are measuring global warming and climate changes, measuring how the earth rotates on its axis, and measuring the distance from the earth to the stars. Scientist have had these issues for a number of years but overcome using indirect forms to measure these challenges. For global warming, scientist used a 350-year record of precipitation in California determined by using 52 tree ring chronologies as proxies for precipitation. (www.geosociety.org/gsatoday/archive/11/12/pdf/i1052-5173-11-12-41.pdf) This method was used to determine average annual precipitation, which showed extended dry periods. These methods were not 100% because there were no baselines to compare. In this day and time to obtain a temperature that represents a large area, it requires measurements of multiple locations. Measurements are taken by thermometers, and averaged together, this can aide in determining regional trends. (http://www.thenewatlantis.com/publications/taking-the-earths-temperature) Another challenge that scientist come up against is measuring how the earth rotates on its axis. When the earth rotates on its axis, it fluctuates in relation to space. This is caused by the gravity from the sun and the moon...

...Chain of Custody in Criminal Proceedings Introduction The production of physical evidence is essential for the conduct of criminal trials. Chain of custody procedures represent the application of a legal principle intended to ensure the evidence produced at trial is the same evidence seized by law enforcement authorities related to the crime, and has not been confused with evidence related to other crimes. In addition, chain of custody procedures are necessary to ensure the evidence has not been altered or tampered with between the time of seizure and the time the evidence is produced in court. Both documentation about the way the evidence was protected as well as the legal adequacy of the procedures used by law enforcement authorities is necessary to establish chain of custody. The failure to establish a chain of custody may result in the exclusion of the evidence at trial, although in some situations involving a broken chain of custody the evidence may be admissible if it can be precisely identified by a unique characteristic such as a serial number. While the documentary requirements to establish chain of custody are relatively similar for the evidence for most crimes, there is variation in the procedures used to maintain a chain of custody depending on the type of crime and the nature of the evidence. The burden of establishing the authenticity of the evidence with chain of custody generally rests with the party seeking admission of the evidence at trial, although there...

...Information Assurance and Security - CERIAS Purdue University West Lafayette, IN 47907 USA Abstract In this paper, we present a framework for digital forensics that includes an investigation process model based on physical crime scene procedures. In this model, each digital device is considered a digital crime scene, which is included in the physical crime scene where it is located. The investigation includes the preservation of the system, the search for digital evidence, and the reconstruction of digital events. The focus of the investigation is on the reconstruction of events using evidence so that hypotheses can be developed and tested. This paper also includes definitions and descriptions of the basic and core concepts that the framework uses. 1 Introduction Since the first Digital Forensic Research Workshop (DFRWS) in 2001 [Pal01], the need for a standard framework has been understood, yet there has been little progress on one that is generally accepted. A framework for digital forensics needs to be flexible enough so that it can support future technologies and different types of incidents. Therefore, it needs to be simple and abstract. On the other hand, if it is too simple and abstract then it is difficult to create tool requirements and test procedures for each phase. For this paper, we have examined the concept of an investigation to determine what is required. The result is an event-based framework that can be used to develop hypotheses and answer questions about...

...measure,record,analyse and report financial data useful for a variety of purposes. Unfortunately, recent financial turmoil emanating from some of the uses applied to accounting reports is causing accountants and other stakeholders to question the foundations of accounting. Some ask questions like is Accounting a Science or Art? If it is a science, what is its foundation in Science? Are their theories guiding the focus of accounting scholars? Are these theories the result of empirical findings and observations? Are the findings the outcome of diligent and rigorous measurement of phenomena? Does accounting measure any phenomena? Is the accounting phenomena amenable to measurement? Inshort is Accounting a measurement Discipline? Scholars are therefore re-examining the foundations of accounting to determine its suitability as a Science. A Science Discipline is founded on theories which are prediction of phenomena. These predictions are possible because rigorous and precise measurements of phenomena is achieved using instruments or tools. Therefore measurement is critical to any science discipline. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Accounting is regarded as a Social Science. The Social Science Disciplines are also regarded as Measurement Disciplines. These disciplines have theories based on quantitative and qualitatively observed phenomena. The phenomena observed in accounting is performance of economic...

...Wellbeing brain science is the investigation of mental and behavioral procedures in wellbeing, sickness, and healthcare. It is worried about seeing how mental, behavioral, and social elements add to physical wellbeing and ailment. Mental variables can influence wellbeing specifically. For instance, constantly happening ecological stressors influencing the hypothalamic– pituitary– adrenal hub, in total, can hurt wellbeing. Behavioral variables can likewise influence a man's wellbeing. For instance, certain practices can, after some time, hurt (smoking, intemperate liquor utilization) or upgrade wellbeing (work out, consume less calories low in soaked fat). Health therapists adopt a biopsychosocial strategy. At the end of the day, wellbeing analysts...

...than people at their normal weight, about 30% of people who seek treatment for serious weight problems have difficulties with binge eating.” (WebMD, 2010) Obesity can also be genetic. If one has a family history of obesity, then their chances of becoming obese are greater than someone who does not have a family history of obesity. According to WebMD (2010), “If your biological mother is heavy as an adult, there is approximately a 75% chance that you will be heavy. If your biological mother is thin, there is also a 75% chance that you will be thin.” Also, as we age, our bodies ability to burn fat tends to decrease, and our metabolism slows down which can lead to obesity. Another factor that can cause one to become obese is lack of physical activity. “Physical activity tends to decrease appetite in obese individuals while increasing the body's ability...

...Wynne Parry, a journalist who covers the biological sciences, reports that The increasing power and accessibility of genetic technology may one day give parents the option of modifying their unborn children, in order to spare offspring from disease or, conceivably, make them tall, well muscled, intelligent or otherwise blessed with desirable traits (as cited in Parry, 2013, p. 102). Therefore, with the rapid changes in science, especially genetic science, parents may be asked unfamiliar questions about the baby that they are going to have. These questions will range from, hair color whether blonde, brunette or even white hair to the very gender itself. This also includes other traits like physical strength, body high, intelligence, hormone levels, eye color, or even immunity against diseases even if his/her parent have these diseases... Having said this, imagine that you can go to a clinic where you can freely choose the physical, mental, and emotional state of your unborn child, and genetic weakness and vulnerabilities whether in appearance or in health can be avoided or fixed. This procedure is known as designer babies. The manipulations of DNA in an organism will result in some significant changes in the genes, thus changing its ordinary structure and do the required function. Although the concept of designer babies might seem a very promising and useful prospect, there is another darker side to this practice. Gautam Naik, Science Reporter at Wall Street Journal, reported that "The...
