Professional Development of Nursing Professional: The Future of Nursing

Introduction In 2010, the United States (US) lawmakers approved the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) attempting to improve the United States health care system by focusing it’s emphasis on cost maintenance, access, and quality of care (Poghosyan, Lucero, Rauch, Berkowitz, 2010). This transformation will now necessitate a restructure of the many roles within the health care professionals, including registered nurses (RNs). In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), and the institute of Medicine (IOM) launched a two-year planned response to the critical need to assess and transform the nursing profession (Institute of Medicine, 2010). According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Changes, Advancing Health, suggest that the future of nursing is advancing with the opportunities that will transform the healthcare system by using knowledge and skills of nursing. The purpose of this discussion focuses on the impacts of the health care reform in nurses’ practice, education, and leadership.
The implications on Nursing Education
In the US, the health care system is changing dramatically. As the baby boomer population is aging, there has also been a surge of obesity triggering the complexity of chronic illness, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. These factors demand highly skilled and knowledgeable nurses in order to provide the utmost of specialized quality care. The education of nurses over the past decades is no longer adequately preparing nurses to deal with the complexity of the patient’s needs, condition, and economic background. Bachelors Degree Nurses Education has become a driving force in today’s professional arena with many jobs requiring, at minimum, certification to get an entry level position. Nursing has lead the professional pack in that an entry level nurse now carries, at minimum, an associate’s degree. The associate degree nurse still has many more certifications to earn on top of their associate degree to allow them to work in certain units. The author argues that there is and that Soldiers definitely are members of a profession. Following the Vietnam War, the Army suffered from an evident depression, particularly within the officer corps and noncommissioned officer corps, that led to a revamping of our professional institutions and doctrine. Observing this process, the late sociologist Charles Moskos theorized that the decline resulted from the Army seeming to develop the characteristics of a civilian occupation rather than the profession it had always considered itself to be. The basic distinction between these two concep-tions of the military lies in their relationship to, and legitimization by, American society. Moskos noted that society legitimizes an institution “in terms of norms and values, a purpose transcending individual self-interest in favor of a presumed higher good.
