...Conclusion This concluding chapter evaluates the implications of this research project through five sections. First, a postscript briefly recalls the process of US-North Korean interaction from the transition to the Administration of George W. Bush in 2001 to Pyongyang’s June 2008 demolition of the cooling tower at the Yongbyon nuclear facility. Secondly, and based on the findings of my empirical case study in Chapters Four and Five, I comparatively examine the strength of offensive realism, defensive realism and constructivism in explaining the extent to which US-North Korean security competition was mitigated from 1993 to 2000. The third section considers the implications of this research project’s findings for the ability of policymakers to exercise security dilemma sensibility. ...People with disabilities represent a significant minority population in the United States; however, they are relatively underrepresented in the American workforce, in spite of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. Many experts agree that the continuing unemployment of people with disabilities is due in large part to the fact that potential employers and co-workers still maintain negative attitudes toward them as a group. These negative attitudes appear to be rooted in a lack of knowledge about people with disabilities, as well as the perpetuation of erroneous stereotypes about them. Some scholars and advocates (e.g., Lee and Rodda, 1994; Unger, 2002) assert that training designed to challenge existing beliefs is the key to changing these negative attitudes. Our research sought to test that assertion by determining the effects of a brief educational intervention on individuals' knowledge about and attitudes toward people with disabilities in the workplace. Using a Solomon four-group quasi-experimental design, undergraduate students were placed into one of four conditions and completed a survey that included a knowledge assessment and the Attitude Toward Disabled Persons Scale (Yuker and Block, 1986). Results indicate that the educational intervention had a significant impact on both participants' knowledge levels and their attitudes, even after controlling for gender and prior experience with people with disabilities. Evidence from the U.S. Public Transit Industry Although performance management processes are widely assumed to be beneficial in improving organizational performance in the public sector, there is insufficient empirical evidence to back this claim. In this article, the authors examine the impact of performance management practices on organizational effectiveness in a particular segment of the public transit industry in the United States. The analysis utilizes original survey data on performance management practices comprising both strategy formulation and performance measurement in 88 small and medium-sized local transit agencies in conjunction with comparative outcome data drawn from the National Transit Database maintained by the Federal Transit Administration. The results provide evidence that more extensive use of performance management practices does in fact contribute to increased effectiveness in this segment of the transit industry. Americans' broader support for recognizing same-sex marriage, at 54%, hasn't changed since the Supreme Court's recent rulings. PRINCETON, NJ -- If given the opportunity to vote on a law legalizing gay marriage in all 50 states, the slight majority of Americans, 52%, say they would cast their vote in favor, while 43% would vote against it. Across the nation's major demographic, political, and religious groups, support for the proposed law ranges from as high as 77% among self-described liberal Americans, and 76% among those with no religious affiliation, to as low as 23% among weekly churchgoers, and 30% among Republicans and conservatives. Other groups showing at least 60% support for legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide include Democrats, adults aged 18 to 34, those who rarely or never attend a church or other place of worship, moderates, Easterners, and Catholics. Others showing less than 50% support include Protestants, adults 55 and older, Southerners, and men.
