Proficiency Level Analysis

Grouping students together in the classroom for lessons is a teaching method that has been used for many years. Teachers group students in either a heterogeneous, homogenous, in pairs, groups of 4 or 5 students, randomly or no groups. Grouping students in a heterogeneous, homogenous, pairs, randomly, no groups or groups of 4 and 5 has its pros and cons (Commins et.al, n.d.).
While reviewing the AZELLA scores and taking in consideration that the students would be doing an in class Language Arts activity I decided to group the students in both a heterogeneous and homogenous setting. Heterogeneous groups are groups that usually have students with all abilities while homogenous groups are students with the same abilities. The heterogeneous setting allowed me to group the students based there reading and writing levels since it’s a Language Arts activity they are doing. I wanted the groups to be in a heterogeneous setting for the first part of the activity so they could work with people on the same level as them. The next part of the Language Arts activity I decided to have a homogenous group with the proficient and basic students together and the intermediate and emergent students together. I believe this set up will work because of the students strengths and needs.

Conclusion

In conclusion, teachers have and will continue to group students for many reasons. Grouping students can sometimes be a challenge but it up to the teacher to make sure the students are distributed in way that will provide a variety. While it may be pros and cons to grouping students, students will and can still learn in these different

This study investigates whether a student’s English language proficiency can be associated with her performance in specific cognitive skills (knowledge, comprehension, application, and analysis) in an introductory accounting course. While the results show no association between TOEFL and performance, the mean of the English composition courses do show a significant association with knowledge and comprehension cognitive skills scores on the first financial accounting course.
