PBL Reflections Project-Based Learning is an amazing, innovative way to enhance a child’s learning potential through developmentally appropriate activities, lessons and projects. It is a well known fact that people have a greater tendency to learn more by doing, not just seeing or hearing. Children that are given the opportunity to engage in a hands-on lesson will have a greater understanding of the material. Students who understand the meaning of what they are learning retain more of the information and apply the knowledge more skillfully (1). Project-based learning allows children the chance to “learn by doing”. Project-based learning can be tailored to fit the educational needs of any elementary/middle/high school grade level. This type of social constructivism allows for the students to follow the teacher’s guided input while constructing their own ideas through hands-on activities and social interaction with peers. According to Vygotsky, the teacher considers all the traditional questions of instruction (how to organize and conduct learning activities, motivate students, assess learning), but the focus is on the students’ construction of knowledge using social interaction (2). The children can gather ideas, discuss their thoughts and develop new ideas and put their plan into action. They work together to form one cohesive and collaborative product. When I think back to my elementary/middle/high school days, most of my memories are of sitting in a desk trying to stay awake. The classes and projects I remember most, the classes I got the best grades in, were the classes with hands-on projects that allowed me to move around and socialize. I felt motivated and excited when given the chance to create something with guidance by the teacher. ...The Problem-Based-Learning Project that I completed in this class was my favorite project that i’ve done in my school career thus far. This assignment had a perfect balance of professionalism, structure, and fun. I was allowed to choose a topic I was passionate about and apply everything that I have learned from all of my English and Science teachers. I believe kids, especially students, tend to do better on projects or even tests when they enjoy the topic. We are also able to stay on task and take initiative. Not only did I learn learn new things when researching my topic, I also got to share what I learned with my peers. Completing this project taught me about myself, what interests me, and what environment I enjoy working in. Overall, I enjoyed my PBL experience. As always, there were positive and negative moments. My favorite moments were ones where everything fell into place. Once we picked our topic, it was easy for us to work together. My work ethic and drive also made my experience better. As a mother, I see the benefits of children brushing their teeth regularly. The three phases provide a straight forward step by step approach of solving issues while also thinking in depth instead of jumping to conclusions.
