Developing Research Proposals Handout

Prepared by Ted Zorn, University of Waikato

This is a handout I often give to students when I expect them to provide a research proposal for a course project. That is, it’s intended for fairly brief proposals, not a prospectus for a masters or doctoral thesis.

It gives students an example of the sort of thing I want, plus some commentary (in italics) about what I’m expecting in each section. I sometimes change the particular example given, in order to encourage them to think about particular kinds of projects. For instance, the example provided here was used in a Leadership Communication course. I’ve used the same format, but a different research project example, for a course on Organisational Communication Technology.

Feel free to adapt it to your purposes.

Proposed Research Topic:
Purposes: Alvesson (1996) claims that a situational approach enables leadership to be viewed and studied as “a practical accomplishment” (p. 476) rather than starting with a conceptualisation of leadership as whatever the appointed leader does. This approach seems particularly well suited to self-managing teams (SMTs), in which leadership is presumably shared. In this project, I will explore how members of a self-managing team enact leadership in their regular team meetings. In particular, I will focus on how SMT members influence the direction of the team as well as the relationships and identities of individual members and the identity of the team as a unit, and how their interaction is enabled and constrained by social and cultural influences (eg, organisational culture, national/ethnic culture, and gender). Such a study should give insights into the workings of SMTs, an organisational form that is rapidly gaining in popularity and acceptance. Also, the study will test the usefulness of a perspective (the

...Proposed Research Topic: It will examine how the weather conditions affect the usage of the different car models offered by the car sharing service. Purposes: For Car Sharing Models it is very important to offer cars which are most needed by the customer. One factor which influences the demand of the customers could be the weather. This question has to be answered to react on the customers needs. Due to the fact that the competitive situation in this branch is under pressure it is very important for Car Sharing Models to offer cars which are most needed by the customer. To achieve a high acceptance of the customer the planning of the buying department has to be adjusted to the customer needs. The result should answer the question if the customers choose cars by considering the weather conditions. The result could be that customers are using more of convertibles when the sun is shining. Another result could be that the people are using the X1 more when it is snowing because this model has an all-wheel drive. Moreover the customers could use the other BMW models less when it is snowing, because the rear wheel drive is less comfortable and less save on a snowy underground. Another result could be that the type of the vehicle does not depend on the weather. Sample Proposed Research Topic.

...Proposed Research Topic: A research project discovering whether or not individuals with disabilities have higher rates of unemployment Purposes: The goal of this proposal is to see if there is a correlation between higher unemployment rates and disability status. This project is important because according to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, everyone should have an equal opportunity to work. If there is a large correlation between disability status and unemployment rates, then we must question why that may be if we have laws giving them equal opportunity. Scope: I will analyze data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for years 2009-2012. The variables will be disabled/not-disabled. The persons included in the data were population age 16 and over, who are not in (prisons, long-term care hospitals, nursing homes, and active duty in the Armed Forces), that resides in the 50 States and the District of Columbia. I plan to conduct a hypothesis test to draw an inference from the two samples and create a histogram to show the raw data. The possible limitation in the data is that it was collected by a voluntary response mail in poll. That means that only those that chose to participate was included in the data. In the survey, there is a set of 6 questions where if the response is “yes” the individual is defined as disabled. There is a chance that the questions might be answered inaccurately if the question is not read properly. There are also many people who...

...The proposed market research of ESK cleaning service 1 Introduction The main purpose of writing this report is based on the market research on ESK cleaning services. The process of analyzing the balance of a new products or services through techniques such as surveys, product examining and focus groups. Researching the market allows a company to discover who their competitors is and what these clients think about products or services before it becomes available to the natives. Researching the industry may be performed by the company itself or by a third-party company that focuses primarily on general industry trends. I have chosen survey as a strategy to do the market research. ESK cleaning service provide several types of cleaning services. This will attract the customers to come to the shop for cleaning their clothes. Before setting up the company, I had given survey forms to individuals around the place and also have done analysis about the opponents and few other aspects. 2 Market trend The common route of a market or of the cost of a resource. Styles can differ long from brief, to advanced, to long lasting. If you can recognize a trend, it can be extremely successful, because you will be able to do business with the trend. This market trend will help to assess the customer care, the opponents, and the trend of overall industry, how the cleaning services will be placed. 2.1 Customer Satisfaction Marketing Techniques is easy, provide best quality of services...

...Graduate School Writing a research proposal for a PhD or MPhil application: A guide for potential students Some Schools and Departments may require you to write an outline research proposal and submit this with your application to study for a PhD or MPhil. The content and structure of the proposal will inevitably vary depending on the discipline area and the nature of the project you wish to pursue. In some cases you may be provided with some guidance in terms of what information should be included in the proposal and, if this is the case, you should read this carefully and follow it. However, where this is not the case, the general guidance, and suggested headings, provided here should help you to structure and present your ideas clearly in your proposal. Your overall aim is to produce a research proposal that is clear and coherent in every respect. You should therefore avoid the use of overly long sentences and of technical jargon. It is important that the proposed research is realistic and feasible so that the outcomes can be achieved within the scale of a typical research degree programme, which is typically three years full-time for a PhD (or two years for an MPhil). Although you should write the proposal yourself, it is best if you discuss its contents with your proposed supervisor before you submit it. Your research question For most projects there is usually one main question that you would like to address, which can sometimes be broken down into several sub-questions...

The Importance of Planning and Design of a Research Project

...Planning and Design of a Research Project A successful research project significantly enhances the justification and goals when defined as an exact statement. Once this is completed several steps are crucial for writing the research plan and executing the project successfully. A research plan generally consists of two areas: research logistics and research context and concepts. The achievement of the plan and integration of the steps can determine if the project will be successful or fail. Writing the research strategy should begin immediately when ideas are brought forth (Congdon & Dunham, 1999). The importance of a research project is not only noted by the data obtained but how the research balances out previous contributions and investigations to one’s understanding of a wide range of topics or to test a wide range of concepts, ecological theories or problems in management of biodiversity and conservation (Congdon & Dunham, 1999). Research plan and design are the foundational building blocks of a researcher’s proposed research. The plan should incorporate the focus of the research as well as why it is important and how the research will be conducted. A simple outline to follow would include the following questions for the researcher to base his/her plan upon: • What is the specific intent of the research? What are you trying to accomplish? • Why should this research be deemed important...

...MALAYSIA Nahian Ali(25651137) Sarani Tilekaratne(25770888) Anfaal Alkharusi(24728128) Monash University Malaysia(2015) INTRODUCTION Background The environment that higher educational institutions have operated in has changed dramatically over the years. Among the main precursors to these changes are alterations of the demographic structure, socio-economic changes, the development of new information and communication technologies, the new knowledge society and the debate over the role of education, of human capital and of scientific research in our societies (Fram & Camp, 1995). These changes together with a questioning of the functionality and performance of university institutions, an increase of society’s expectations with respect to the performance of public universities, as well as an increase in the demands of the various users of these services have resulted in a concern to improve the quality of teaching, research and all services that a university provides (Capelleras & Veciana, 2001). Higher education is increasingly recognized as a service industry, placing greater emphasis on meeting the expectations and needs of its participating customers, who are the students. According to Astin (1993), just like any form of business, factors related to satisfaction levels and students’ perceptions of quality will attract and retain students. Satisfaction is defined as being a consequence of the expectations and experiences of the subject and/or course.  In...

An Investigation Into Nursing Skills in Recognising Clinical Deterioration of Patients in Acute Care Setting in Saudi Arabia

...Research proposal An investigation into nursing skills in recognising clinical deterioration of patients in acute care setting in Saudi Arabia Introduction Acute care nurses are expected to demonstrate skills with regards to early detection of deterioration in patients and seek for emergency support. This is indispensable for delivering safe patient care, and thereby to save lives (Cioffi 2009). Nevertheless, ensuring patient safety in acute care setting is still a challenge in the healthcare system in Saudi Arabia (Aldossary, While & Barriball 2008; Almalki, FitzGerald & Clark 2011). Till date, no systematic approach has been undertaken to ensure that acute care nurses are aware of the emergence of new knowledge as well as technological advances that are necessary for early identification (Aldossary, While & Barriball 2008; Al-Ahmadi 2009; Almalki, FitzGerald & Clark 2011). Early identification with patients who are in need of emergency care can prevent cardiac arrest and lessen morbidity and mortality (Cioffi 2009). This study aims to obtain an in-depth understanding of the current level of competence of acute care nurses in Saudi Arabia in terms of their knowledge, skills and attitudes. The findings will be used to develop an integrative model that can provide acute care nurses with effective education and training so that they can be prepared more effectively to identify clinical deterioration at early stages. As such, the participants must be informed of the nature of the research that is to involve them. Additional and important components of ethical considerations of action research are freedom from harm, anonymity, and confidentiality. Research Proposal

...COMPONENTS OF THE RESEARCH PROPOSAL (Source: Brynard & Hanekom (1997): Introduction to research in Public Administration and related academic disciplines; J L van Schaik Academic Publishers, Pretoria, pages 24- 26) Research encompasses various components which need to be explained or described in a research proposal. The term "research proposal" indicates that a specific course of action will be followed. The following components can be regarded as steps in the writing of the research proposal. They are important and should be followed for the actual composition of the proposal: 1. Title page of the research proposal A research proposal should be submitted with a title page on which full particulars pertaining to the following appear: the name of the researcher; student number; course; and the following wording: Research proposal in preparation of a research project with the following proposed detail:"..... " (For example: "The education in Public Administration of chief directors employed in provincial government departments") 2. Introduction Emphasise the importance of the proposed research and describe the research topic or theme. This is usually done in one or two paragraphs. In all cases it should be stated whether a relationship exists between the proposed research and research undertaken before. If no such research has been undertaken previously, this should be pointed out. 3. Motivation Present, as clearly as possible, the source of interest...

The Econmist’s (2013) article acknowledges reproducibility as a core principle of science, which expresses that: “The idea that the same experiments always get the same results, no matter who performs them, is one of the cornerstones of science’s claim to objective truth. If a systematic campaign of replication does not lead to the same results, then either...
