• Description and How It Works

Genetic Engineering is the process of manually adding new DNA to an organism. The goal is to add one or more new traits that are not already found in the organism, and to enhance or modify the organism’s characteristics. The process starts by identifying a gene that controls the desired trait and using various chemicals to extract it from the DNA strands. An insertion package is prepared that includes several unrelated genes that lets the trait gene survive in an alien organism. Then, the package is forced into the host organism’s cells which is attempted using several various vectors. The most common for plants is bacteria; the insertion package is hooked onto the bacteria’s …show more content…
Some argue that this process can decrease or even eliminate many serious genetic diseases. However, others also argue that bad medical conditions may also be passed onto the new organism that came from the original organism. A common claim is that it is unnatural, but this argument rests on nature being good. Scientists argue that diseases, illnesses, and premature death are also a part of nature, making it not perfectly good. Others also say that this does not consider the consent of future generations, but neither does normal sexual reproduction since genetic makeup is random anyway.

• Personal Opinion

Genetic engineering for plants and animals is an innovative idea to get rid of disorders from these organisms. Although, performing this process in humans for medical purposes may be helpful, it should not be used for personal preferences. If one wishes to perform genetic engineering because he or she prefers someone to have different coloured hair or any other miscellaneous characteristics, it should be discouraged because this is close to playing with divine control and goes askew with morals. The research for genetic engineering should be continued, but it should be under strict watch and have limits. …show more content…
It can confirm or rule out genetic conditions that an organism may have, or help determine an organism’s chance of developing or being a carrier for this disorder. This process is performed on blood samples, hair, skin, amniotic fluid, or other types of tissue. The sample is sent to a laboratory to look for specific changes in the DNA or proteins. For newborn screening, a blood sample is taken from the baby’s heel. Unlike other genetic screenings, the results for newborn screening is only shown to the patient when it is positive. Even then, additional testing still must be performed.

• Controversy

Although screenings make opportunities for finding disorders, some argue that doctors that perform these tests are able too tailor the results into the parent’s preferences. Other are strongly against on how scientists are looking for markers in DNA for homosexuality, autism, and violence. The results may also make parents want to perform abortion, especially if the baby has a disorder. Abortion is strongly frowned upon in society, especially in religious groups. Yet, with genetic screening, children who discover about their disorders can have the option for healing early before too much damage is done.
