After the death of Augustus in forty four BC Octavian, Caesar's grand nephew, is named as heir. The senate puts efforts into molding Octavian and using him, since he was still young. Octavian, however proved to be more clever than expected and he raised an army without anyone knowing and uses it against Marc Antony. He demands to be made consuls yet later befriends Antony. They then form the second triumvirate with Lepidus publicly, in forty three BC. Later, like the first triumvirate Lepidus is forced out in thirty six BC while Octavian and Marc Antony fight for power. In thirty one BC Octavian wins. Now that Octavian is in charge he needs to be cautious. Because, if he flat out exercised all his power as dictator he would be assassinated
