...Introduction Bees are essential organisms of almost all of the world’s terrestrial ecosystems. Bees are flying insects that are in the same class as the ants and wasps among others. These small insects are responsible for pollination and wax production and honey production. They inhabit every continent except for a continent known as Antarctica. Importance of bees The insects are known for its role in pollinating a large percentage of the flowering plants. They participate in sexual reproduction that ensures cross pollination. This process ensures genetic diversity in the food chain that ensures that there is flow of energy from the primary producers to higher levels of consumers. Since green plants are source of food for other organisms, the reduction of one of the primary pollination agents, or even their possible disappearance, is of concern. The bees are on the decline due to various reasons that will be considered later on. I believe the there more pros than cons that can be obtained from the bees. Factors for reduction of bees The disappearance of bees is a very frightening scenario that is subject to an explanation. There various reasons as to why there has been a reduction of bees. ...Killer Bees Russell Montoya Eastern New Mexico University Killer Bees Introduction Many people around the world are familiar with the rap group Wu tang Clan and their nick-name the “killa bees” but people don’t really know much about the bees they are actually named after. The Africanized Honey Bee are the original name given to these bees but they have been deemed with name “killer bees”. The book titled “Killer Bees. The Africanized Honey Bee in the Americas” defines the killer bee as, “crosses of European races of Apis mellifera with the more aggressive African subspecies, A. m. scutellata” (1992). These bees originated in South Africa but in the 1950’s Brazil brought some in for honey production after which swarms escaped and traveled to the Americas and ultimately arrived in North America in 1985. Today they are mostly used for the pollination of honey in the southern states of America. Cause of Problem The difference between the Africanized honey bee and other bees is their aggressiveness. This causes a problem because these bees tend to attack and express more aggressive behavior than any other bees. Africanized honey bees traits according to Columbia.edu are "a highly defensive nature, responding more quickly and more bees sting, sensing a threat from a person or animas 50 feet or more from their nest, and perusing a perceived enemy ¼ mile or more” (2002). ...Introduction Millions of African smallholders—farmers, herders and fisherfolk—are resource-poor and suffer from food insecurity. Their low incomes mean they are unable to make investments and take on risks. Their agricultural systems are buffeted by sudden, acute shocks caused by natural and man-made hazards—drought, flooding, erosion, conflicts. Long-term trends, in part the result of international markets, national policy decisions and institutional frameworks, often move against them. The food-security problem is not merely an inability to produce enough food to keep pace with population growth. Such a simplistic reckoning fails to take into account the ecological, cultural, social and economic features which are the bedrock of sustainable agriculture. Environmental degradation and a diminishing resource base seriously affect African farmers who depend on rainfed agriculture. As critical watersheds are deforested, water supplies have become unreliable and the climate less predictable. Local actors are seldom consulted when agricultural policies are formulated. Small-scale farmers (especially women) find it hard to get credit, seeds and other inputs, and the information they need to farm their land in a profitable, sustainable way. Some governments still control the prices of key farm outputs, and unscrupulous traders manipulate the prices of others.
