As the third most popular sport in the world, there is a surprising lack of information about prosthetics that could be used to play field hockey. In all likelihood this stems from the fact that there is no field hockey (in a modified form or otherwise) in the Paralympic games (a number of countries are working on developing “Parahockey,” but this program seems to be mostly directed towards people with intellectual disabilities rather than physical ones), and additionally from it’s reputation in the United States as being sport for only women (who seem to have fewer athletic prosthetics built for them on the whole). While lower leg amputees could easily use a prosthetic meant for other field sports like soccer or lacrosse, looking into prostheses for arm amputees present a set of much more interesting dilemmas. …show more content…
Given how a field hockey stick is held (see Figure 3) prosthetic design must take into account which The TRS “Power Play” seen in Figure 1 is a terrific example of a design that could be easily changed for a left hand amputee field hockey player. The design grips the top of the stick and allows for significant stick control with a strong grip on the stick (TRS Prosthetics 2016). The TRS “Slap Shot SS” seen in Figure 2 would work better for a right hand amputee as it allows for a grip that can slide up and down the stick (TRS Prosthetics 2016). Additionally, the two prosthetics could also be used in combination for a person who is a double arm amputee. Both designs would need to be modified to fit a stick of a more circular shape and to account for differences in sizing, but these changes could be made without too much
