...Kemoya Riley Maria Labbato LBST 2101-207 4/4/16 Prostitution Debate Paper Prostitution is the occupation or act of providing sexual services with someone in exchange for payment or some other benefit. Prostitution is known to be the world’s oldest form of occupation. It dates back to around 2400 B.C. The profession is recorded to produce about one hundred billion in revenues annually throughout the world. Prostitution is considered illegal in the United States, with exception of some places in Nevada. The criminalization of the trade is a controversial issue because it is said to be damaging to not only the individuals involved in the trade but also surrounding others. According to sources, prostitution cause the spread of diseases, moral shame, and human trafficking. The amount of effort and money put into destroying prostitution hardly shows good results. Although it brings much complaint and conflict, legalizing prostitution would help limit problems for the sex workers, improve the economy and help weaken the spread of diseases. There are many reasons argued about why prostitution should be illegal. One of the most argued reasons about why prostitution should be illegal is because its morally wrong. Morals is a person’s standards of behavior or beliefs concerning what is and is not acceptable for them to do(google.com). Morals are based off of a piece of information or an experience and differs from person to person. Morality is subjective and what is considered morally...

...The sex thoughts overpower a person wellbeing which makes it hard to engage in healthy relationships. Sex addicts suffer from distorted thinking which leads to justifying and rationalizing his or her behaviors (Herkov, 2012). In addition, some sex addicts tend to put the blame on other for his or her issues. However, individuals who are addicted to sex often deny there is a problem because of the shame and guilt. The addiction first starts in the mind. Once the addiction gets into the mind it moves to fantasy, ritual, acting out, and the big shame happens. It is the shame that keeps repeated sex behaviors and isolation. Sex addicts live a double life. The double life includes: trying to have healthy relationships with those around him or her and the sex addiction as a secret. The sex addict problem is not the sex but it is the pain he or she is facing (Miller, 2005). Once the pain is dealt with or discovered, than the sex addict will be set free. There are several causes to sex addict’s behaviors. Rejection is a big cause to sex addictions which leads to full shame and feeds the addiction even more (Miller, 2005). Some other causes include: dysfunctional family structures, all types of abuse, history of family addicts, childhood exposers, uncaring or distant parents, and pain. For instance, if a child grows up without his or her parents...

...number of young girls living as teenage prostitutes. The average age of a teenage prostitute today is 13 years old, and this problem has hit communities from the impoverished to the upper middle class. The lure into prostitution has captured girls that are runaways from broken homes, as well as those who suffered emotional and sexual abuse. Although these girls are offenders, they are first victims; thus causing advocates, social workers, and policy makers to unite to establish prevention programs and provide help to those girls living as prostitutes under the hands of men who represent themselves as their pimp a way of escape. Teenage prostitution is a problem in our community that many have failed to look at the severity of its growing presence. The number of girls living a life of prostitution has greatly increased over the last few years and is now beginning to draw local and national attention. The numbers and tragic stories of these young girls lured into this lifestyle for various reasons are beginning to cause society to stop and take notice. Girls as young as eleven years of age are being forced into a lifestyle of prostitution as a means for survival. In order to begin to work on addressing the problem of teen prostitution, it is important to understand the dynamics of this cycle of lifestyle choice today and why it has become so widespread. The community has to come together to address the reasons these young girls are prostituting...

...Prostitution: A Problem of Equality, Dignity and Integrity There is much argument and debate in society about the issue of prostitution. Gunilla Ekberg, co-executive director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women states that “in order to successfully find solutions to the problem of prostitution, it is necessary to think about and discuss among ourselves what kind of society we wish to live in.” Before this discussion, however, we need to take a step back. The first question that needs to be addressed is whether we as a society see prostitution as a problem. Do we see prostitution as an inevitable, inescapable and necessary profession - a profession that has always existed as the ‘oldest profession in the world’? Or do we acknowledge that prostitution is a violation of internationally recognised human rights: equality, dignity and integrity? Is prostitution a problem? A problem for equality It is widely recognised that violence against women is antithetical to the establishment of gender equality, and that one of the most severe and devastating practices of gender-based violence is the commercial exploitation of women and girls, which includes prostitution. The United States Department of State determines that few activities are as brutal and damaging to people as prostitution. Field research in nine countries concluded that 60-75% of women in prostitution were raped, 70-95% were physically assaulted, and 68% met the criteria for post traumatic stress disorder, in the...

...Prostitution is a highly debated term. Its common definition is the exchange of sexual services for compensation, usually in the form of money or other valuables (Ditmore, 2006; Edlund & Korn, 2002; Esselstyn, 1968). Yet, there are many activities that can fall into this category, and it can be argued that getting married for the purpose of having a home and livelihood qualifies as prostitution (Edlund & Korn, 2002). Some add that to differentiate prostitution from other forms of nonmarital sexual activities, it must be devoid of emotional attachment between partners (McGinn, 1998). Others, such as Edlund and Korn, argue that an element of promiscuity must also be involved. However, the notions “devoid of emotional attachment” and “promiscuity” are also vague. A young woman maintaining a long-term sexual relationship with a “sugar daddy” may not fall in this category, while others may argue that this is indeed a form of prostitution. There is also difficulty in determining the number of partners one should have to be considered promiscuous. For example, the following was noted: A woman who had sex with more than 23,000 men should be classified as a prostitute, although 40 to 60 would also do. However, promiscuity itself does not turn a woman into a prostitute. Although a vast majority of prostitutes are promiscuous, most people would agree that sleeping around does not amount to prostitution. (Edlund & Korn, 2002, p. 183) John Ince, a lawyer and leader of the Sex Party, a Canadian...

...John-Alexander Reyes Deviant behavior 26Mar13 Paying for sex is nothing new. Prostitution has long been regarded the oldest profession. It existed before there was even money to trade. The actually act of using sex as a method to obtain resources, whether it was for food, shelter, trinkets or clothes a sexual favor for anything tangible is prostitution. It makes and interesting topic to debate when you regard that it was actually a survival mechanism for early women. The earliest recordings of prostitution were in ancient Mesopotamia. In 8th century BC there were rules written to protect the rights of prostitutes. This is a significant piece of information because it tells us several things about the working of their culture and how the actual women were treated. It first addresses the issue if it was legal or not. The inclusion into laws of the time can confirm that it was indeed legal and was actually looked as a respectable profession. The laws deal specifically with the inheritance rights of the woman who were prostitutes. The Sumerians actually required each woman in their society to sleep with at least one man in the temple of their god. This is just one of many instances of “Spiritual prostitution. This was done as a sign to show tribute to the god of hospitality. This was indeed very important to a nomadic people. Most of earliest references that most of us are familiar with come from the bible. This contains the earlier recorded history of the Jewish people....

...Child Prostitution Child prostitution refers to children and adolescents receiving money or other items of value in exchange for engaging in sexual acts or allowing sexual acts to be performed on them. Child prostitution is a form of sexual abuse. According to Child Maltreatment, published in 2008, sexual abuse is defined as a type of maltreatment that refers to the involvement of the child in sexual activity to provide sexual benefit or financial benefit to the perpetrator, including contacts for sexual purposes, molestation, statutory rape, (child) prostitution, (child) pornography, exposure, incest or other sexually exploitative activities. Both girls and boys may be prostituted. Some children have had hundreds of sex partners. They usually continue a life of prostitution into adulthood. Federal laws in the United States, as well as laws in every state, ban child prostitution. In the United States, any person who knowingly transports any child under the age of 18 years in interstate or foreign commerce or in any commonwealth, territory or possession of the United States, with the intent that the individual engage in prostitution or in any sexual activity for which any person can be charged with a criminal offense, or attempts to do so, may be fined or imprisoned. In some states, such as Maine and Wisconsin, prostituting one's child is specific grounds for the termination of parental rights. (In other states, parental rights may be terminated for sexual abuse, abandonment...

...Prostitution should be legalised to protect the workers from violence and STDs such as HIV To the Home Secretary, I am writing to express the distress I feel about the current laws of prostitution and how legalising it would protect against STDs and violence. I have three main reasons as to why prostitution must be legalised. To begin your current laws banning prostitution are ineffective. Secondly legalising prostitution would be much safer for the prostitutes and thirdly legalisation can be part of a wider education in context to prostitution, which I will explain further later on. Before I consider the three reasons I want to heighten your awareness of the current abuse statistics and the current HIV statistics. a detailed study carried out in 2004 concluded that prostitutes do indeed have an increased chance of contracting STDs such a syphilis, hepatitis B and HIV. Over all 30,000 women a year worldwide die of HIV contracted through prostitution. These shocking figures surely warrant some consideration towards legalising prostitution. So why is prohibition ineffective? It may shock you to hear that the UK has increasing rates of prostitution and could be set to overtake the USA. Due to high unemployment these women (in a low paid, low skilled job) would earn around £5.93 an hour. The women who prostitute may not have any other source of income and desperately need the money for their families. We need to become comfortable with the fact that (worldwide) people...

...and some things that weren’t meant to be seen. No one talked about sex out in the open, and very few people posed nude for photos. One the other hand, just because it wasn’t a topic that was normally discussed, does not mean it wasn’t thought about. The desire for sex is something natural, being shame or uncomfortable about the topic, still did not hinder the men from the north and south to go and find sex. At the soldiers camp they could purchase something called a “Barrack Favorite”. Which were novels that included “sexual nature”. Photographs of nudity could also be purchased. A single nude picture was 12 cents, and one dozen nude pictures sold for 1 dollar and 20 cents. The pictures were not usually white women, but blacks or Indians. These were just some of the things the soldiers liked to look at during their leisure time. They were so far away from their wives, they had to find something to keep their sexual needs occupied. Prostitution also experienced a major growth during Civil War times. Not just because the husband wasn’t there to supply the women’s sexual needs, but because of the lack of income that was coming into the household. The most popular area for prostitution was Tennessee. Before the break of the war was Tennessee recorded 207 prostitutes, however in 1863 reports claimed to have at least 1500 prostitutes. Many historians believed that the women would catch STD’s on purpose and pass them on to troops of the opposing side. In conclusion, I would be...

...victims. Yet through personal testimonies, it is seen that sexual exploitation effects male victims as much as female victims. The purpose of this paper is to look at two ways sexual exploitation affects male victims: physically and psychologically. Since there is very little research done on the physical and psychological effects of sexual exploitation on male victims, it is important to begin by showing how real the effects of sex trafficking are on male victims. In December of 2015, there were three Hungarian men who helped government officials dismantle a U.S. gay prostitution ring. These men had been lured with the promise of high paying escort jobs, but instead, they found themselves being held as sex slaves. During the trial, the victims recounted their enslavement. They had been held in captivity for 17 months in windowless rooms. They were raped, beaten, and threatened daily. They were forced into prostitution and web cam performances. Their captors kept them sleep deprived and starved. One survivor said, “After a year I was ready to take my own life. I felt worthless, unwanted and felt I could never face my family again” (Daley). Another victim said in the court written statement, “When I see something with red or purple, it reminds me of those red and purple colored rooms where I was locked in. I’m afraid that one day I’ll be woken up in this windowless room and everything starts over again” (Daley). The third victim said, “My soul is still held in captivity by them” (Daley)...

...sex trafficking? Sex trafficking, or also known as human trafficking, is the trade of actual human beings and used for the purpose of sex slavery, forced labor, commercial sexual exploitation, and other appalling things for the trafficker or more. “Sex trafficking occurs when someone uses force, fraud or coercion to cause commercial sex act with an adult or causes a minor to commit a commercial sex act” (Smith). There are also commercial sex acts which include: prostitution, pornagraphy, and any sexual performance; only if done in exchange of items like money, drugs, food, clothes, or shelter. Because there is a serious demand for an industry like this, sex trafficking is a popular business. This industry is cyclical, it starts where...

...WHY PROSTITUTION SHOULD NOT BE LEGALISED Introduction The issue of legalisation of prostitution remains a highly controversial and debatable one. A lot many times the questions put forth demand to know whether legalisation will really stop the harm to prostitutes or the so-called ‘morally-secure’ society. A stronger element of agnosticism emerges in the proposals for legalisation when it’s on ground effect depicts a consternating increment in the very same issue it seeks to check- human trafficking. Total legalisation makes prostitution, the epitome of human rights violation, as much of an occupation as any other, albeit it remains clearly distinctive from other low-status and abusive forms of employment by the vice of being the worst one. Legalisation indubitably renders the economically and socially decumbent and vulnerable position of prostitutes- bolstered. It is true that the struggle for economic survival pushes people to extreme measures where in their choice of work appears justifiably consensual. But a deeper understanding reveals that the women engaged in prostitution for economic survival are in it by ‘coerced choice’ instead of a real one. In most cases, the prostitute is poor and traumatized even before she enters such a profession. Prostitution is a deranging and extreme form of gender discrimination. It not just affirms, but backwashes male supremacy. A violation in its most characteristic forms, legalised prostitution is nothing but an infringement to the...

...Because of the displaying picture that was supposed to be promoting Thai tourism, is rather seen as a provocative image. Foreign travellers view and perceive it as a selling of the commercialized sex, and see Thailand as the sex-offer country. The picture even increases the international reputation of Thailand as a “Brothel of the world”. A number of international tourists -- especially male -- visiting Thailand as they are , apart from other reasons, motivated by sexual services that are available at their hand in bargained-price (Hall, 1996). Normally, sex workers are the most focused medium in this industry. Many people condemn and marginalise them. They also claim that prostitutes are solely responsible for the worldwide fame -- or rather shame -- for the sex industry establishment of Thailand. However, the opposition asserts that, for the sex industry to be able to reach this magnitude; this problem is more complex than we thought. In this essay, I will argue that prostitutes are not the only one to be blamed on in the sex tourism in Thailand. The history of sex tourism in Thailand started in the late 1960s -- during the Vietnam War. Thailand not only allowed American military to establish the stationary troops, but also...

...fear, promise of a better life, along with many other things to convince an individual to go with the trafficker. Trafficking is done for the exploitation of an individual this includes prostitution, slavery, and forced labour. Since the early 1990’s, the UNODC (United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime) has been working on a prevention plan for human trafficking and The Protocol to Prevent, Supress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons was developed. It states that “In addition to the criminalization of trafficking, the Trafficking in Persons Protocol requires criminalization also of persons whom attempt to commit a trafficking offence, the participation as an accomplice in such an offence, or organizing or directing others to commit trafficking” (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2012). This means that anyone who participates in human trafficking, be it the recruitment of victims or knowingly hiring a victim, will be criminalized for his or her actions. Canada is a destination for human trafficking. The highest percentage of individuals being smuggled into Canada are used for sexual exploitation, prostitution and forced labour. Males and females, children and adults can become victims of human trafficking. However, in Canada, majority of the victims are women being used for prostitution and sexual exploitation. Victims of human trafficking are often abused, and are subjected to sexual and physical assault. Most live in poor conditions and victims often suffer from illness...
