...Imagine that you were told that you weren’t good enough to continue on playing the sport that your world was revolved around because you were a girl. In the movie She’s the Man (2004), Viola Hastings is told just that. When the girls’ soccer team at her school is cut because of a lack of players, she is devastated. She seeks the help of the boys’ soccer coach, asking him to let them try out for the boy’s team. The coach laughs in their faces, saying “girls aren’t as fast as boys, or a strong, or as athletic. This is not me talking, it’s a scientific fact” (Fickman). Outraged, Viola does everything in her power to prove this, as well as many other stereotypes wrong. Viola, played by Amanda Bynes, disguises herself as her brother and try’s out for his schools’ boys’ team. “This transparently cross-dressed performance advances a distinctly conservative perspective on both gender identity and the human subject” (). She’s the Man uses a humorous approach to help viewers understand the gender roles of teenage life when Viola is able to break through the barriers of femininity versus masculinity, disproving stereotypes about romance, athletics, education, and beauty along the way. There are many different stereotypes of femininity and masculinity in the movie, but the main one focused on in the movie is romance and the different ways that each gender enacts the roles of their individual relationships. Main character Viola Hastings is in a relationship with Justin, who is a typical...

...statement, such as atheists like Hume who would argued that existence can’t be proved using reason as we need both observation and empirical evidence to prove God’s true existence. Others argue that faith doesn’t need logic in order to prove the existence of God, through believing in his existence he exists, alongside knowledge from revelation in the Bible. Kant argues that existence is not a predicate of God, it adds nothing to our knowledge of God, and so we cannot just assume that he exists. It is impossible to compare God to a perfect island, just because he appears to perfect does not mean we can assume he exists; applying logic to a being doesn’t bring it into existence. Others would argue that God’s existence is logically necessary. It could be argued that philosophers like Plato use logic and reason to prove God’s existence for example in the allegory of the cave. Anselm would have disagreed with this statement completely as he clearly thought that God could be proved by logic and reason alone. His ontological argument relies upon using logic as he deducted, he argues that God is, ‘than that which nothing greater can be conceived’ thereby if there is nothing greater than the most Supreme Being conceivable, the most Supreme Being must exist. Thus his entire argument is based upon the foundation of logic in order to prove God’s existence. Similarly Descartes would have also disagreed with this statement as he felt it was as logically necessary for God to exist in the same...

...With the Australian mining industry particularly hard-hit by the international financial downturn, one enterprising Chinese business has managed to provide a lifeline for one ailing Perth-based metal mining company, whilst also establishing a bargain basement foothold in this hugely lucrative market. The deal came as Perilya Limited, a 22-year old base metal mining company, saw its market value slashed from $1billion in 2007 to a low of just $18 million when it announced its intention to seek new funding. Its value eventually rallied to $30 million, but, despite a raft of cutbacks and lay-offs, its future looked far from certain. Australian acquisition proves rich seam for SZLN Zhang Shuijian: "seeking additional foreign partners". Shenzhen Zhongjin Lingnan Nonfemet Co (SZLN), a Shenzen-headquartered State-owned mining business took the opportunity. Realizing the potential of the struggling Australian company, SZLN invested A$ 45 million (200 million yuan) into Perilya last February and acquired a 50.1 percent stake in the business. The deal marked the first time a Chinese metal company had acquired a controlling stake in an Australian mining business. Following the acquisition, SZLN is now China's largest zinc-lead producer. The company's president, Zhang Shuijian, sees the takeover as a hugely significant for SZLN and its "going global" initiative. Zhang is very much looking to the future with his company's new acquisition. In 2010 and 2012 Perilya's existing...

...Milton Berle said, “Laughter is an instant vacation.” The person that makes me laugh is Sara Hachi. Sara makes me laugh because she always sasses me and then I sass her back. In the hallways on our way to class, we walk fast to our class after lunch, and sometimes I hold onto her backpack and she holds onto my backpack. She doesn’t like it when she has to hold onto my backpack, because I go through really skinny spaces, and then she yells at me, and I laugh. Sara and I can say the meanest things to each other, and we won’t get offended, we just say something meaner, and then we just laugh. Even when I’m having a bad day, Sara can make me feel better. In the article, “New Study Proves That Laughter Really Is The Best Medicine,” researchers...

...Thomas Aquinas believed in God and wanted to prove God's existence to anyone who would not accept his faith alone. We can prove God's existence in different ways, but we cannot prove it by examining the concept of God. Aquinas proves the existence of God in five ways. In “ Summa Theologiae” written by Thomas Aquinas, in his third article he accepts that something necessarily exists which is god. The third way is found to be the most complex out of the five ways. Aquinas states that everything can fit into a “need-not-exist” category, so if everything belongs or fits into this category then is it true, that at one time nothing did exist? Or on the other hand, would have it been impossible for anything to exist, and even now would nothing exist....

...Discuss whether it is possible to prove we are born with innate ideas An innate idea is an idea, of which, we are born with. I believe it is possible that we are born with innate ideas, although few. However, I do not believe it to be possible to prove this. G.E. Moore, Chomsky, Plato and Leibniz all tried to prove humans to have innate ideas. Alas, they could not do so without flaws in their arguments. G.E. Moore had the idea that morality was an innate idea. This is because he believed ‘good’ could be neither taught nor defined, as everyone has different opinions on good. As some people may say it good to kill a serial killer, but many people would argue that this is not. This means our ideas of what is ‘good’ or not must be innate, as they cannot be taught to us, thus our morality is innate. This is unlike a statement such as 2+2=4, as this is a state which can be taught to us and is definitely correct. It cannot be argued against as it is a necessary truth. ‘Good’, conversely, could be something that is picked up through life. That as we grow up and we are told off for doing wrong and praised for doing right, we could learn our morality. This fits in with ‘good’ still being undefinable’, as every child will have a different upbringing with different experiences and learn a different meaning of ‘good’. They will not definitely be born with the sense the idea of morality but learn it from their sense, as Hume would argue. They also learn this from inward expressions- emotions-...

...The teleological argument also known as the design argument is a posteriori basing stuff primarily on knowledge gained from external experience. The idea being that basically due to the intricacies of the world there must be a designer. The word telos from teleological means purpose and purpose links in with Aristotle’s ideas of causality. The argument has two sides one being Aquinas’s on an argument to design and Paley’s being an argument from design. Aquinas 1224-1274 argument comes from the fifth of his five ways which is him pointing out the fact that there is evidence in the world around us of the existence of God therefore showing his Empirical knowledge. Furthermore Aquinas holds the belief that humans are always working towards something, such as knowledge (act for an end), as we strive to achieve the best outcome; meaning we do not achieve that end or outcome intentionally, instead it is for a reason. Aquinas reinforced the view that something which lacks knowledge cannot move towards an end, unless guided by a being ‘endowed with knowledge and intelligence’, therefore, this shows that there must be some intelligent being that exists, pushing humans towards a goal or an end. Aquinas concluded that this being is God. Much like Aquinas William Paley made the argument about the existence of God through an argument from design. Paley, a theologian thought of the analogy through the use of a stone and a watch. He said that if you came across a stone never having seen it...

...by Anselm, to re-inforce faith but not proves God’s existence, this is stated by Anselm as Proslogian is a supplementary prayer book. However the argument itself does border on trying to proves gods existence, this argument is as follows: God is a being that which no greater can be conceived, a being that exists in reality is better than one that just solely exists in the mind, therefore god must exist in reality. Anselm himself argued that even through reason, those without faith could not truly understand god, as Anselm stated that the argument was never meant to for faith upon someone but this argument itself was only for the reassurance of faith, he himself already accepts gods existence. Anselm considered that reason alone can lead to error and therefore has to be supported by faith as it is only through faith that greater understanding can be achieved. if the believer accepts there is god then the ontological argument may be a valid argument that god’s existence is necessary. In the same way a triangle has 3 sides, for a believer that believes they understand the concept of god then for them god exists to quote Anselm: “For I believe this too, that ‘unless I believe I shall not understand’”. Therefore Anselm himself believes that it does not actually prove anything unless you have this preconceived notion about the existence of god, this is also known as faith. Karl Barth supports the idea that the argument in itself was to not prove gods existence but it is a prayer, this...

...Aquinas stated that everything works together in a particular order despite the fact that inanimate objects have no mind or rational powers to achieve this. He explained his point by using the example of an arrow, saying that for an arrow to reach its destination it must be directed first of all by the archer. In the same way ‘natural bodies’ seem to act in a regular fashion to reach a specific purpose. As they, like the arrow, are not able to direct themselves, there must be a first cause. This first cause is what Aquinas considered to be God. Another philosopher that postulated a teleological argument is Paley. Paley put forward his argument for the existence of God during the period of enlightenment (where science was being used to prove evolution). Paley explained his theory using an analogy of the watch, but drawing comparisons between features of the watch and of the universe. He stated that if a man was walking across a heath and he came across a stone he could assume that the stone came about through nature. However, if he were to come across a watch the same could not be suggested. The watch shows order (cogs, etc) and purpose (telling the time) and therefore it's not reasonable to assume that the watch came about without the agency of a watchmaker. Paley's analogy compared the watch with the...

On the other side you have Charles R, Oldham representing Hicks, as well as Edward C DuMont on behalf of the EEOC. The reason this question is so important is to make sure that innocent employers are not wrongfully sued for rightfully firing an employee, while also giving the employee a fair chance to prove discrimination....
