Prozac

Our company has been called on to provide damage control because of the recent death of a well know actor who was prescribed Prozac. The FDA has asked us to provide data that we have on the clinical studies. This is going to be very messy and we will have to be very careful about what is said and written from this point on. Our attorneys will be dealing with the litigation side in addition to the outside law firm that has an excellent reputation on Mass Torts. It is very likely that we will be sued and it could take years to resolve this. My plan is to do as much damage control as possible before we have every person that ever took Prozac calling attorneys to sue. Please do not have any conversations over the phone with reporters who are trying to get a scoop. All inquiries should be directed to the litigation department. We will be coordinating with the IT department so that the news releases and social media, such as Facebook and Twitter are all about putting the best information we have out there. We need to have all the sales reps start contacting with the medical personnel to advise them of the situation and how we intend to downplay these negative effects that everyone will start to have now that this has come to light. We will continue to advertise the other drugs in the same category as Prozac, the SSRI’s, without any mention of being in the same class as Prozac. We have our customer service reps that will handle the calls coming into the company and we will have to make sure they are well rehearsed on their comments. Anybody that calls in because they say they are having suicidal thoughts will receive immediate attention with the escalated department regarding Prozac. We will be addressing the television audience with commercials that show studies of how good it has helped people in dealing with depression. We will not be continuing the Prozac commercials quite as aggressively as in the past so it does not draw attention to the negative results. It is very prudent that we get our sales reps out to the physicians’ offices and reassure them that there is nothing wrong with the findings but they may have to be more careful in prescribing these drugs to teenagers. The FDA is going to require a black box warning on the prescription for teens but other than that we have good studies that shows how much good this drug is. This drug has been such a godsend for people that have compulsory problems and for women with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder and for people with anxiety problems. This is a great off labeling brand for us and we do not want to lose the momentum we have with the drug. The FDA will have to gather the evidence when it gets ready to present its case to the grand jury. We will continue promoting how well the medicine has worked for more than 54 million people. We will release the studies that the FDA provided us on the clinical studies and we will make them answer to the public as to why they allowed the medication to be approved if it was so bad.
When patients start calling in about the drug and its side effects, we want to make sure that they sign a release so that we can include their good results on record. We can not ask them personal questions if they do not sign the release. When our sales reps visit the physicians’ offices make sure that any information they give you does not violate the HIPAA rules so that the case is not stopped before it is started because we did not abide by the rules.
We will be working with the different departments here and everyone needs to work together. The more good news that we give to the American people will result in less lawsuits. The more that our attorneys can settle these suits out of court the better the chances we have to have some of the drugs we have in research be made public and this drug will slowly fade into the past like all of the rest of the bad drugs.
The advertising department will be handling the new ads that we will be running in light of this new information. The generic version of the drug is out and it probably would be a good idea to inform the doctors to call it by its generic form rather than Prozac. The advertising department will also be monitoring the social media websites and getting the information out that this is a good drug despite one famous person attempting suicide.
Remember that we are to be very careful about what information is given to the press, media and customers. We will be mailing all of venders the information that they need to continue with the production to assure them we are continuing production in light of this accusation.
I have put together a packet for everyone so that they can be as prepared as possible for any situation regarding the Prozac negativity right now.
Here is what the sales reps can give to the physicians regarding their social media:
How can a health care provider address social media risk?
• Establish a Committee
• Develop policies
• Set up strategies
• Conduct training
• Engage in monitoring (This is really important for the physicians in case someone needs help and they go to Facebook)
• Audit current users
• Use disclaimers (That can not stressed enough)
Here is a section on Social Media Best Practices – Policies:
• What policies need to be considered?
• Employees and for personal use
• Most policies are out date so urge them to update
• NLRB has provided a sample policy that you can give to the physicians
• Have them check how they are drafted especially in light of this new development
• For the employees who are monitoring the social media website on behalf of the company make sure they have scripts and information to relay to the patient.
• Let them know that best way to manage risk is through training
• Include refreshers on basic issues like HIPAA, in addition to problems with security on the internet
• Monitoring their site is the best control they have:
• Have guidelines and procedures in place
• Problems should be handled right away to minimize the impact
• They need to react quickly but thoughtfully
• They need to use disclaimers this is so very important
• Do not give out medical advice on social media sites
• If it is an emergency dial 911 immediately
• Have them use common sense
• Same rules apply offline as they do online in reference to HIPAA
• Protect the patients’ confidentiality
• If anything seems off or it is a weird situation consult the legal counsel right away
All right everyone you know what needs to be done. Prozac has been here a long time and it is not going anywhere soon. Its name brand recognition is right up there with Coca-Cola (DePaolis, 1994). We even have talks in the works for distributing it to veterinarians for the anxious pets of these well to do Americans. So let’s show them how good Prozac is.
