...One statistic found on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Website states that in England, “Implementing a comprehensive national smoke free law prohibiting smoking in all indoor areas of workplaces, restaurants, and bars resulted in an average reduction of 18.2% per year in the rate of hospital admissions for asthma in children under the age of 15 years.” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014). In 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a new policy advising parents to keep toddlers in rear facing car seats until the age of two. This recommendation came after years of research and the development of a child sized crash test dummy that was created by Ford Motors. The research and tests conducted discovered that “children under the age of two were 75 percent less likely to suffer severe or fatal injuries in a crash if they are facing the rear.” (Pediatrics, 2011) A third statistic that I find interesting that affects our children today is in regards to obesity. Obesity has been a long standing problem in our country due to the wide range of fast food fatty options, lack of quality food at schools, lack of exercise, and a misunderstanding by parents and children of proper nutrition. However, in 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama introduced this country to “Let’s Move.” Not only did this campaign encourage exercise in youth, it also rebuilt the food pyramid and restructured the menus in schools nationwide. According to the Centers for Disease...

Company Comparison: Raytheon (Rtn) and Textron (Txt)

...Raytheon (RTN) And Textron (TXT) Raytheon (RTN) Mission statement: “Aspiring to be the most admired defense and aerospace systems supplier through world-class people and technology”. (Raytheon.com) Background and History Raytheon was founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1922, as the American Appliance Company, by Laurence K. Marshall, Vannevar Bush, and Charles G. Smith. Marshall and Bush were engineering students, while Smith was an inventor and scientist, but they were all entrepreneurs. After failures to market an idea for a new refrigerator the trio began to focus on electronics. (Raytheon, Wikipedia.com) An idea that Smith and Bush had worked on years earlier, “a new kind of gaseous tube that would allow radios for the first time to be plugged into a wall socket and operate on electricity rather than batteries”, would be their new direction. (Raytheon Company, fundinginguniverse.com) After acquiring a patent for the idea and because an Indian company already had rights to the name American Appliance Company, Raytheon Manufacturing Company was born. (Raytheon Company, fundinginguniverse.com) The consumer demand for electronics was booming and the new radio-receiver power supply (gaseous rectifier), which immediately allow radios to be in every household for pennies of what it cost to continuously replace batteries. (History, Raytheon.com) As the competition for radio-receiving tubes began to intensify Raytheon, mainly Laurence K, Marshall, saw the need to diversify...

Assignment 1: Organizational Analysis

...Assignment 1: Organizational Analysis Keira White Professor Kim Williams BUS310 Human Resource Management May 3, 2015 When choosing a company for this assignment I wanted to choose a company that had local ties to where I live but also was a fairly large company so that I could gather the appropriate information. The company I chose is Raytheon. Raytheon is a technology and innovation leader specializing in defense, homeland security and other government markets throughout the world. Raytheon’s core manufacturing concentrations are in weapons and military and commercial electronics. Raytheon was established back in 1922, reestablished in 1928 but did not take on its current name until 1959. With a history of innovation spanning 90 years, Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration and other capabilities in the areas of sensing; effects; and command, control, communications and intelligence systems, as well as a broad range of mission support services. They are not only the world’s largest producer of guided missiles, but they are also the fourth largest defense contractor in the United States by revenue. What stands out the most to me when I think of Raytheon is the Patriot Missile from the Persian Gulf War in the early 1990s. Raytheon’s vision is to be the most admired defense and aerospace systems company through their world-class people, innovation and technology. Another thing about Raytheon that really sticks out in my mind is that...

Political Warfare In The Winter War

...Although often forgotten, the Winter War remains as one of the finest examples, in modern history, of a small defending force successfully warding off a noticeably larger attacking force. While pitily left to itself, the Winter War has undoubtedly set up the groundwork for all future conflicts involving “bush fight” warfare, commonly referred to as “guerrilla tactics”. Apart from that Political warfare, one of the key aspects of any war, was polished to its present-day state. Political warfare has many names, most common being Psychological Warfare, Psy Ops, MISO, Psy Ops and the most sounding being Propaganda. Without the Winter War, today’s fighting techniques would have been fundamentally different. According to different sources, the...

Genetics and Down Syndrome

...How Genetics Influence Down Syndrome PSY 104 Professor Vincent July 7, 2013 How Genetics Influence Down Syndrome Genetics play such an vital role in our development. Every individual carries genes from their mother and their father. Characteristics such as height, eye color, if we have curly or straight hair are all determined through the our genes and specifically our chromosomes. Many times, parents inadvertently pass genes on to their children through their DNA that may contribute to developmental disorders such as Down Syndrome. In this paper, I will explain the role of genetics and how it plays a part in development. I will also explain how the genes of two parents can influence the traits and characteristics of their offspring. Every person has genes and chromosomes located in every cell of their body. Those genes and chromosomes are what make us unique and different. Almost all of a person's traits, from their eye color to what type of hair they will have are coded in their genes (Beck, 2000). Genes and chromosomes come in pairs, with one member of each pair coming at conception from the father and the other from the mother. Normally, at the time of conception a baby inherits genetic information from its parents in the form of 46 chromosomes: 23 from the mother and 23 from the father (Skallerup, 2008). When a child has an extra chromosome for a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46, they are believed to have Down Syndrome. The genetic material children carry play...

...IQ and Learning Styles Allana Robinson PSY 104 Child and Adolescent Development Michelle Wright September 21, 2015 According to Gardner, we are all able to know the world through language, logical-mathematical analysis, spatial representation, musical thinking, and the use of the body to solve problems or to make things an understanding of other individuals and an understanding of ourselves. Where individuals differ is in the strength of these intelligences and in the ways in which such intelligences are invoked and combined to carry out different tasks, solve diverse problems, and progress in various domains. Gardner says that these differences, “challenge an educational system that assumes that everyone can learn the same materials in the same way and that a uniform, universal measure suffices to test student learning. Gardner argues that a contrasting set of assumptions is more likely to be educationally effective. I think I possess an intrapersonal learning which is understanding one’s own interests and goals. Learning through interaction and more in tune with one’s feelings. I am more independent with my learning especially with deciding to be taking online courses for my degree. (Lane, n.d.). The Theory of Multiple Intelligences Howard Gardner talks about the different types of intelligences in one of his most famous pieces, “The Theory of Multiple Intelligences.” Intelligence is a general skill that is found in variable amounts in all persons.
