For those of you who have not been here before my name is Ivy, I am the counselor here at Healthy Mind, Healthy Weight Center for Eating Disorders. Today we will be talking about Obesity/Anorexia and the reasons we eat or don’t eat. First I would like to start today’s session off talking about some of the physiological aspects of eating and why we really eat. There are many different theories of what tells us we need to eat. We get the feeling of hunger to signal when we need to eat. As we all know we provide our self with food and that food is converted into energy. Once the food enters our body it starts what is called digestion. Digestion is a gastrointestinal process that breaks down food and absorbs the vitamins, minerals, and fats into the body. Once food is digested it is converted into energy and stored in three forms; fats, proteins, and glycogen. Energy is mostly stored as fat in the body for two reasons, one it holds more energy than glycogen and two glycogen holds more water, which would make the average person over 600 pounds. There are three phases that each person goes to through to metabolize energy (Pinel, 2009). The cephalic phase is the first phase. The cephalic phase begins with the sight, smell, or thought of food. The brain weighs approximately three pounds and is made up of nerve cells which interact with the rest of the body through the spinal cord and nervous system. It contains about 75 percent water along with 100 billion neurons. Neuroscientists estimate that there are 100 trillion connections among the neurons, and nearly an infinite number of paths that neural signals can travel through parts of the brain called the morass. These nerve cells transfer information back to the center of the brain where information is processed, generated and appropriately reacted upon. The human brain gives us the ability to move, generate information, to speak and understand language, to interact with the environment, to interact with inanimate objects and to communicate with others. The brain can be divided into three basic units: the forebrain, the midbrain and the hindbrain. However, there are also five major structures of the brain. The Myelencephalon, Metencephalon, Mesencephalon, Deincephalon and Telencephalon. There are even other individuals who have to live with sleeping disorders. Sleep deprivation, and sleeping disorders negatively affects those who are experiencing these issues. Luckily, scientists have come up with many different medications to help individuals sleep better. In this paper I will be discussing a time when I was sleep deprived and how it compared to the effects of sleep deprivation which were discussed in the text. I will also be discussing the effects of long-term reduced sleep and some common sleeping disorders and some of the drug remedies which can be used. About a month ago I experienced a hard time sleeping at night and it lasted a week. I would try and force myself to go to bed at my usual time, which is at 10:00 pm, but I would just lay there wide awake. When my alarm went off I felt like I had just fallen asleep. My usual sleeping routine works perfectly for me, I usually go to sleep around 10:00 pm and wake up at 6:30 am, which gives me eight and a half hours of sleep. When I was sleep deprived I am not sure how many hours I was sleeping, but I do know that I often saw 2:00 am, which means I was getting at the most four and a half hours of sleep each night. In my life right now, I have my 3 month old granddaughter and her mother living with us as the baby was recently hospitalized due having reflux disease and is on a very strict eating regiment in order. This means we have to wake her up every two hours to feed her. I also work shifts that can be anywhere from 12-24 hours, needless to say sleep is at the bottom of the list of things to do, and I can definitely feel the effects from the lack of it. Lack of sleep does affect moods, just as your mental state can also affect sleep. Anxiety can increases agitation, which in turn can make it hard to sleep. Stress affects the ability to fall as asleep by making the body wide awake and sensitive to things such as noise. Individuals such as me who are under constant stress or may have exaggerated responses to life stressors will often time have sleep problems. For me lack of sleep makes me cranky, irritable and unable to concentrate or focus on anything. It seems that the more I want to be able to sleep, the less I am able too. I am so focused on not getting sleep, I work myself up to a point I cannot sleep at all. Sleep deprivation, can have significant cognitive risks that are associated with it.
