Bailey PSY/250 March 15, 2014 Mrs. Laura Epstein Psychoanalytic Personality Assessment In comparison and contrast the psychoanalysis theories of Freud, Jung and Adler are similar in general but each holds their own unique differences in their personal unique way. Throughout this paper, I will first define each psychoanalyst characteristics, describe the eight stages of Freud’s theory, and explain the characteristics of personality using these stages. I will also provide three real life scenarios utilizing Freud’s defense mechanisms. . Everything on this earth is comprised of different, biological make up, situations, environments, evolution and timing on earth. Each individual person’s personality is comprised and developed based on those same factors. We have read about three very important men that have given their own psychoanalytical theories on how personalities are developed and come to be. These men are Freud, Jung and Adler. This paper will explain to you my understanding and opinions and on their theories. Freud’s theory describes ID, Ego, and The Superego. In the Theory and Practice of Counseling & Psychotherapy (7th deterministic, and evolve through key psychosexual stages in the first six years of life. ...Biological and Humanistic Approach Penny Jo Watkins PSY/250 Febuary 25, 2012 David Levosky Biological and Humanistic Approach He or she can commonly recognize the aspects of Freudian psychology is the presence of the Id, Ego, and Superego. In knowing this Freud says, there are levels of consciousness that shape human personality. With the knowledge of the most basic is the Id, which can make us realize what our most basic human instincts are.The Ego is responsible for taking care of our most basic needs and the Superego dictates how we address those needs in a manner consistent with social norms. Freud also believed that sex-drive, or libido, does more to shape our personality and interactions than anything else does. He or she who is being honest with themselves could agree that sexual desires can shape our personality. Most people’s instinct to reproduce is certainly one of the greatest forces that drives anyone, or any living being. One certain instinct that is a greater force in the world, is the need to survive. Abraham Maslow is a famous psychologist who stated that people have different levels of needs that must be fulfilled before the next, higher, level of needs can be achieved (Friedman &Schustack, 2009). This is called Maslow’s Hierarchy. Maslow stated that one’s physiological needs are the most basic. Some of these needs are to survive; the need for food and water. As soon as people have these needs they feel safer, this is Maslow’s second...

...Habits I certainly have quite a few quirky habits that consume my day; a lot are associated with my OCD. So, the question is, which habit should I write about for this paper? Like everyone, I have good habits as well as bad habits and habits that I just do because of my OCD. Although I have tried many times to break a lot of the bad habits, it is not so easy. One habit that I continually try to break, is smoking cigarettes. Unlike most, I am not addicted to the nicotine and I do not crave a cigarette unless I am drinking an alcoholic beverage. Hence, this is the habit that frustrates me the most. I do not wake up wanting a cigarette and I can run all day without having one or even thinking about one. To me this habit is strange. I would think smoking cigarettes becomes a habit because of the nicotine addiction, as for me it is only when I consume alcohol. I have gone weeks even months without a cigarette and of course I was not drinking during those times. Then I have an alcoholic drink and the urge to smoke a cigarette arises. I developed this habit in high school when a group of my friends started smoking and I tried one for the first time. At first I did not like the feeling and it actually made me feel quite sick. Now as I am writing this paper I cannot remember how the habit stuck. All I can remember is that I only want a cigarette when I drink. As far as this habit relating to my personality I am not quite sure. I have thoughts related to how it relates to my life but...

...Biological and Humanistic Approaches to Personality Theories of personalities have been studied for many decades. The biological and humanistic approaches to personality have both become infamous in studying the science behind personality. Abraham Maslow developed the hierarchy of needs because he did not believe that the conditioning theories adequately portrayed the complexity of human behavior. In analyzing both the biological and humanistic theories, one can see where Maslow may have been right in that assumption. The basic perceptions of humanistic and biological theories vary significantly. There are some basic ideas behind humanistic psychology. Humanists focus on the present rather than looking at the past or toward the future. Well individuals should take responsibility for themself; regardless of the actions and every individual possess inherent worth. Even negative actions do not negate the value of the person. The achievement of personal growth and understanding is the goal of life (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). On the other hand biological theorists believe that genetics can determine a person’s personality. Some concepts state that even if biology plays no direct role in personality, the way a person looks affects how one sees himself/herself and how others interrelate with him/her. This unintended affect controls how a person develops into adulthood. Biological viewpoints teach that intelligence and genes could define a person’s personality. Temperament and mental...

One’s behavior and social interactions play highly influential part in the development of habits. Once a habit is formed it can be quite difficult to break. It requires the ability to recondition one’s self to behave differently. I struggle with a harmful habit of my own. Since the age of 14 years old I have been smoking cigarettes. Although I have managed to stop on a few occasions, ultimately I return to smoking sooner or later. I intend to analyze what caused this addiction and obtain a better understanding of why I cannot stop. Since I was a small child, I have watched both my parents smoke an innumerable amount of cigarettes. I would always tell them that smoking is bad for them and that they needed to quit. At age 12 started my rebellious phase. I did not have rules mostly and the ones that I did have were not followed. This was mostly because there were no consequences to my actions. One day while my mother was not home, I stole a cigarette from her room and decided to light up. At first I coughed of course, but then I began to like the smooth minty flavor. Soon, I began standing near the corner store and asking someone who was going...

During my first week of this course this was something that became evident. Personality is a science in itself. It is used to measure why people are the way they are. In analyzing my own personality I in turn am beginning to have a better understanding of who I really am. How would you define personality? Personality can be described in many different ways. “According to the definition by Henry Stack Sullivan, an influential 20th century psychologist, personality is the emerging relational patterns between two people” (Mayer & Korogodsky, 2011). I personally would define psychology as a number of specific character traits combined to form a specific way of being and communicating. What are some key personality features that define you? The eight basic aspects of personality are perspective, psychonanalytic, ego, biological, behaviorist, cognitive, trait, humanistic, and interactionist. (Friedman & Schustack, 2011). To fully understand one’s key personality features. In determining my own key personality features these aspects must be considered. I am innately shy, somewhat introverted, and a people-pleaser. I think these three features are key in defining my own personality. What are some key concepts or constructs...

They proponent’s of psychoanalytic theories emphasize that these unconscious experiences are not without reasons. There are some inner forces that are working to direct our behaviors in some direction. Freud was the main proponent of psychoanalytic approach. The neo-Freudians such as Jung, Adler , Erikson and Horney have also major contributions. Freud’s theory of personality Sigmund Freud is a founder of this approach. His work has profound effects on many disciplines including psychology, sociology, anthropology, art and literature. According to Freud the mind is divided into two parts; conscious mind that includes everything of which we are aware of and unconscious mind that is an epitome of feelings, thoughts, memories and urges that our outside of our conscious awareness. Most of these things in unconscious mind are unpleasant or painful. He divided the personality into three elements in his theory of personality; id, ego and super ego. Id : Id is present from birth. It’s completely unconscious and operates on pleasure principle. It needs immediate satisfaction of its impulses and desires which if not satisfied create tension and pain. It’s very...

...Behavioral and Social Cognitive Approaches to Forming Habits Duke Stevens PSY 250 November 2, 2015 Tyler Maxey Behavioral and Social Cognitive Approaches to Forming Habits Habits as defined by Merriam-Webster's Dictionary as a settled tendency or usual manner of behavior or a behavior pattern acquired by frequent repetition or physiologic exposure that shows itself in regularity or increased facility of performance. In this paper, I will analyze one of my habits, how, why, and where it was developed. Also, I will discuss the chances of continuing the habit, and attempts to break the habit. Using behavioral personality theory and components of social/cognitive theory, this paper will explain why I have this habit and why the habit was formed. I will also develop a plan applying operant conditioning to change my habit and discuss which theory best explains my personality, behavioral or social/cognitive theory. Social Cognitive Theory The social cognitive theory explains that behavior is learned by watching others do things, using the school of thought that since others are doing this behavior, one should also do this behavior to be like their peers, learning that behavior by witnessing the actual act. One example of this would be a sister and brother are playing with a new toy that requires a certain pattern of movement like a Slip N' Slide. The first sibling runs and slides down the Slip N' Slide on their stomach. The 2nd sibling observes the act, not wanting to be out done by...

...University of Phoenix Material Personality Reflection Using the textbook, the University Library, the Internet, and/or other resources, answer the following questions. Your responses to each question will vary but overall should be 700- to 1,050-words in length. 1. How would you define personality? I define personality as the combination of characteristics that make you who you are and how you are defined. A personality is just as unique and individual as are the fingerprints we are born with, even though many people may share similar characteristics within their personality, Part of having personality that makes everyone unique is their mannerisms: making hand gestures when they are talking, the pitch and tone of their voice, how they make eye contact, and the words they say to describe something all play a part of having a personality. Another feature of having personality is how someone dresses. Wearing certain clothing, such as funny shirts or bright colored cloths, may show someone who is outgoing and not closed in with people. 2. What are some key personality features that define you? Key personality features that define me would be that I am humble as a person. Going through life experiences made me appreciate everything I have and live with what I got. I also have a lot of humor, which makes me approachable and sociable. Even though I am perceived as funny, I do take everything around me serious, as I am observant, independent, intelligent...

...Amber Ryan/Stokes June 23, 2012 PSY/250 Michele Montgomery University Of Phoenix Psychoanalytical Personality Assessment Everybody is unique or special in one form or another and each personality has a theory. For many years psychologists have based theories upon individuals and I the writer will compare and contrast three well known psychologists Sigmund Freud, Alfred Alder, and Carl Jung. Sigmund Freud was one of the greatest psychologists in time he Alder and Jung’s theories were very similar but then again very different. Within these theories we will discuss characteristics with which I agree and disagree with, explore the stages of Freud’s theory explaining characteristics of personality using stage components and describe the uses of mechanisms using real life experiences. The hypothesis Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, and Carl Jung were in agreement with is that human behavior is determined by an individual’s past experiences and childhood experiences which paint his or her impression on events and the world at large. Adler believed in individual psychology, Freud believed in the theory of psychosexual development and Jung analytical psychology. Freud dichotomized three characteristics of personality to id, ego and superego. The id or “it” worships the pleasure principle its sole purpose is to satisfy desire and release tension. Our ego or “I” ordain according to the reality principle meaning we learn to adopt, plan and act to the world around...
