...Psy/270 week 5 Checkpoint: Substance Abuse The viewpoint that I agree with the most would have to be the one on stressful and unsupportive family environments are the most common to have substance abusers. This theory comes from sociocultural views. My ex-boyfriend and the father of my child was a drug-addict for the last two years of our relationship but I had hoped that after our son was born that it would slow down and then eventually stop but it never did. For a while there I kept thinking it was because of his friends and thought if they would stop doing it around him then he would stop also but that didn’t happen either we even tired moving away from the area and the people he was around but it still continued. There was always some excuse and the same apology. He eventually ended up getting a DUI and got ordered to AAA meetings. This didn’t work either because all it did was made him mad. He wasn’t ready to admit he had a problem to himself or anyone else. This was the hardest step for him. The whole point behind this essay is that when my ex was younger his dad had a drug problem and that was what he has grown-up around all his life his dad also use to beat him and things and so he went to the only thing that took the pain away and that was the drugs. People who live in poverty and stressful situations are more likely to abuse drugs. This is the theory behind sociocultural perspective. Depending on our lifestyle and our surroundings that we live in can be a major factor in whether we abuse drugs or not. When people are surrounded by drug problems in their community, and their friends and family use as well, they have a higher chance of becoming a user themselves. This does not mean that it can be avoided. Depending on your lifestyle and choice of friends, drug abuse does not have to happen just because a person lives in poverty. The first point is how much willpower the individual has. I know of several people who chose not to use or abuse drugs and they lived in or below the poverty level. Drugs are in every level of income. It does not matter if you’re rich or poor; it depends on how the individual wants to deal with his/her life situations. There are many self-help groups, support groups, friends, family, pastors and other people in our communities that are willing to help someone who are having problems with drugs. Symptoms of situational depression do not usually last for long periods of time, but certain circumstances can influence these symptoms to linger and become more severe (everydayhealth.com, 2013). Although the symptoms of situational depression is similar to some of the symptoms caused by unipolar depression and bipolar, situational depression differs greatly from these two disorders.
