It started out with the rough edges that come along with growing up in a dysfunctional household. I quickly moved from one dysfunction to an adulthood filled with greater issues. I married my childhood sweetheart, and then our lives crumbled following the death of my son. I picked myself back up again, and found my strength and purpose from the example my son laid forth. I am a mother again, and I am facing a new set of challenges that military life brings. Life is like the ever-changing seasons with its ups and downs, but there is always a summer. Beginning with my hard start at life, to where I am now, I have learned many lessons. I grew up in an extremely dysfunctional household, but with the support of my siblings I made it through. In my early years, my father suffered from drug addiction and alcoholism. After attending rehabilitation, my...

...PSY 202 Week 2 Assignment My two life events are the birth of my son and being in the military, the reason I have chosen these two events are because they have both significantly had a positive impact on my life the following paragraphs will show why I believe that these events have positively impacted my life. The first event is my son, when he was born my life was completely changed for once it was up to me to take care of another human being besides myself, I had to feed him, change his diaper, give baths and take him to the doctor for checkups. This was life changing for me because I had never had to do any of those things before. There was no more going out to parties and hanging out with friends all hours of the night, my life was totally devoted to him. It was a life changing experience that I had to change and adapt to in a short amount of time, thus impacting my life in a positive manner. Urie Bronfenbrenner proposed a theory of ecological systems, which focuses on broad, interconnected influences on human development. It proposes that we can best explain development in terms of the interaction between individuals and the environments in which they live(Bronfenbrenner, 2004) The second event would be my career in the military. I had to completely change my way of thinking because being on a military routine is not for the faint of heart, nor is it for everyone. I had to go off on my own and have a stranger telling me what to do, where to go, how to properly address...

On January 14, 2009 I gave birth to my beautiful baby girl and ever since my life has forever been altered. Giving birth for me was a multi-dimensional experience, emotional, physical, cultural, and spiritual. Becoming a mother at 22 years old was a peak experience in my life that made be grow up faster. After becoming a mother I felt a sense of maturity and self –fulfillment. Childbirth for me was both scary and joyous all at once. I was scared because I didn’t know what to expect but at the same time excited to meet this human that I had part in creating. Once she came into this world instantly there was a special bond I shared with my daughter. Life Event 2 (Joining the military): The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 played a major factor in my joining the military. ...PSY202: Adult Development and Life Assessment 1 September 2014 Reflecting on the Past: Brainstorming Activity Growing up and all through life you experience life changing events, some are positive and some are negative, but they all have a direct effect on your life. I am going to discuss five life events that were significant to me and how I feel because of the experience. The greatest event I have experienced would have to be the birth of my three daughters. I didn’t know it was possible to love someone more then I love myself until I gave birth to each one of them. Words cannot express the range of emotions you feel knowing that you created a baby. My daughters have changed my life immensely and I don’t know where I would be without them. Watching them grow up and become who they are is one of the best blessings I have been given. From the day I was born I have always been a “papa’s girl”. Being the first born grandchild, we formed a bond that lasted thirty-one years of my life. Some of my favorite memories growing up involved my grandfather from camping in the back yard to fishing, snowmobiling and remodeling their house. My grandfather taught me how to be independent so that I didn’t have to depend on a man to fix anything. The morning that he died was the worst day of my life, it felt like a piece of me died with him. It has been a year now and I still catch myself picking up the phone to ask him how to fix something or to tell him about my day. At the age of...

...LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE Professor Elizabeth Hoyle Psy202 Adult Development and Life Assessment March 31 2013 What are the goals in my life? As I got older I always set goal for myself. My number one Personal goal is to be a great Father to my son. Growing up I did not have the best role Models of what a good father was. A definition of a father to me was just a provider And that was it. I never got the love and nurture that I needed or any child deserved. But I was blessed And still blessed to have my brother in my life and even though he didn’t receive that love we Always tend to give that to each other. He was my role model and he was the definition of what a father Is and seeing how he is with his kids has showed and helped me to this day. My Professional goal is becoming a police officer and someday joining the FBI. I have Always wanted to become a person who’s willing to put his life on the line to help and Save others ever since I was young. When I was little I loved to play cops and robbers With my friends all day with our police toys it was my favorite thing to do after school. One of my biggest Reasons now to become a Police officer is mostly for my family and my community I want to be able to protect everyone as best as I can and give them a voice. There is so Much more I want to learn at Ashford so I can I apply it to my career as well as my goals. But to achieve that will be hard but if I keep my mind focus I know I will achieve it...

...Growing Pains Cheaque Gay PSY202: Adult Development 7/18/2013 A person’s childhood is usually the most important time in a person’s life. During this time they experience innocence, develop personality, they build character and they develop maturity. Many people look as their childhood as a time where everything was perfect, no worries or anything. In reality your childhood has a lot to do with our character, personality, and why we are the way we are today. Many children that come from a broken home tend to have more struggles and problems in their adult life, versus children that grew up in a stable home. Although we are all destined to go through something or deal with hard times no matter what background you come from, we all struggle in our own way. My paper will discuss the innocence of my childhood and the not so innocent. You will also see how my childhood and a big impact or the decisions and choices I made in my adult life; it all will represent the pain of growing. Although it was painful growing up, it was because of my growing pains, that I’m a better person today. As a child growing up, I can remember always being out with my parents. We did so much I almost forgot how our house looked. If we weren’t at the amusement parks, beach, my grandmother’s house, we were at another relative’s home. No matter where we were, we were always together. The unstoppable four: my mom, my pops, my sister and I. We lived in a nice single family home on the Westside of Baltimore...

...Adult Development Education is Vital for Great Decision Making PSY202 Adult Development Education is Vital for Decision Making Before learning about adult development, I was unaware of how the events in my life have shaped me. Looking at them now, I would have made better decisions if I had the knowledge of adult development that I have learned in this class. As an immigrant, I know what an opportunity I was given when I came to the United States. The education I have been exposed to in the United States has increased my situational awareness and overall decision-making abilities. I was born in Santiago, Chile to a middle income hard working family. My parents were very young when I was born so they didn’t have any experience raising a child. They were also very poor. My father struggled through medical school. During the earlier years of his career, I remember how he would go from house to house taking people’s blood pressure for donations. This is how we would eat. Due to my father’s intelligence, the University of Chile hired him as a scientist. He became very successful which is why the National Institute of Health bought all of us tickets to the United States. This was a very major transition in my life. I was nine years old when I came to the United States. Because I was so young, I learned English very quickly. I was the oldest of three girls. During this time of my life, I gained a sense of industry more then a sense...

My goal for this paper is to discuss what abuse and neglect is and what psychological impact it may take on an individual when they become older. What kind of behaviors may manifest after years of abuse and/or neglect and what can be done to prevent future generations of children from experiencing trauma? WHAT IS CHILD ABUSE/NEGLECT? There are four (4) types of child abuse: emotional abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse and neglect. The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) defines child abuse as "child maltreatment as any act of series of acts of commission or omission by a parent or other caregiver that results in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child". Physical abuse is an act by a parent or caregiver in which non-accidental injury is inflicted, such as hitting, burning, drowning, shaking, suffocating or poisoning. Sexual abuse refers to sexual activity...

I’ve gained an appreciation of who I am today, the factors that have motivated me to continue, and a deeper understanding of the path I would like to follow as I pursue future goals. In my development I believe the foundational building blocks of who I am can be traced to the nurturing that I received from multiple parental sources within my environment. I was born a black child and raised initially within a dysfunctional poor family environment. The very nature of my parent’s genetic make-up with alcohol issues, abusive tendencies and intellectual differences. Leads me to believe my life should have turned out much differently if genetic nature was more at play in my development. There for I think that for the moment I feel that nature along with the nurturing environment shaped who I am today. I feel my life is a text book argument for nature vs. nurture. My life’s journey from birth...
