...King Leonidus It was a warm August day in the year 480 B.C, when I went out to meet Xerxes' legion at Thermopylae. My force consisted of 7,000 Greek men, which was nothing at all compared to the 200,000 Persians that awaited us on our path. My Spartans and I marched on the front lines toward the fight hoping that we would spark the spirits of our Greek allies by knowing they had the battle-hardened Spartans leading them. As we marched into the pass, our eyes perceived the Persian immortals, these soldiers were Persia's exclusive fighting force and they feared nothing. They wore a type of formidable mask which was all white with obsidian indentations where their eyes were supposed to be. We formed a tenacious line with our spears pointed out in front of our shields and the rocky pass covering both of our sides. We sat there in our imperishable pack waiting for the immortals to start their advance, we knew if we broke our formation it would create an inadequate spot in our line which could be penetrated and eventually over ran by the immortals. I also had hopes that one of them would give me a lot of information, along with motivation, to write a review on using the different concepts that we have talked about in class. So way back in 2007 the American film 300, directed by Zack Snyder, and staring popular film stars such as Gerald Butler, and Lena Headey, brought millions and millions of mainly young and old men to the theaters. I personally remembered when it came out because everyone at school was talking about how amazing it was and quoting some of the lines from the film. And even with its popularity, I never did get the opportunity to watch the film, until this weekend. The General Plot of the movie is narrated by a Spartan soldier Dillios, who narrates the story from king leonidas's boy hood through the sacrifice of the 300 Greek Spartan soldiers, which sparked the war against the advancing Persian "immortals". Previous knowledge of the movie from what I had heard from others who had seen it was that it is a war movie based on a true Greek story many hundreds of years ago. ...I gave a four-star rating to "Sin City," the 2005 film based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller. Now, as I deserve, I get "300," based on another work by Miller. Of the earlier film, I wrote prophetically: "This isn't an adaptation of a comic book, it's like a comic book brought to life and pumped with steroids." They must have been buying steroids wholesale for "300." Every single male character, including the hunchback, has the muscles of a finalist for Mr. Universe. Both films are faithful to Miller's plots and drawings. "300," I learn, reflects the book almost panel-by-panel. They lean so heavily on CGI that many shots are entirely computer-created. Why did I like the first, and dislike the second? Perhaps because of the subject matter, always a good place to start. "Sin City," directed by Robert Rodriguez and Miller, is film noir, my favorite genre, taken to the extreme. "300," directed by Zack Snyder, is ancient carnage, my least favorite genre, taken beyond the extreme. "Sin City" has vividly- conceived characters and stylized dialogue. "300" has one-dimensional caricatures who talk like professional wrestlers plugging their next feud. The movie involves a legendary last stand by 300 death-obsessed Spartans against a teeming horde of Persians. So brave and strong are the Spartans that they skewer, eviscerate, behead and otherwise inconvenience tens of thousands of Persians before finally falling to the weight of overwhelming numbers. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the method for Xerxes' furnished power, manufactures its quality regarding its naval force, drove by maritime officer Themistocles. Themistocles is urged to an unwilling association together with the customary rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta who may live with its overwhelming infantry troops. However Xerxes still guidelines overwhelming in numbers over sea and range. While coming to the historical accuracy of this movie, we be clear of one thing right from the saying go: this is not in any helpful sense an authentic film. After watching the film very closely for my critique I believe there is a serious underlying theme that everyone has the right to be free and sometimes you have to stand up and make sacrifices to keep your freedom. Standing up for freedom is never an easy task as shown in 300 but, everyone deserves to be free. In discussing the storytelling, acting, cinematography, editing, sound, style and directing, the impact of society on the film, genre, a formalist approach to analysis, and the overall textual theme of 300 I will attempt to back up my belief. Storytelling 300’s narrative structure is the first-person point of view of Dilios, a Spartan solider under the command of King Leonidas. The film is presented in chronological order and takes place in Sparta and Thermopylae, Greece. The major conflict in the film is that the Persian army has come to Sparta and requests their submission or will kill them and enslave their women and children. King Leonidas makes the decision to stand up to the Persians but; is not allowed to go to war with the Xerxes, the Persian God-king, because the Ephors deny him the right. Both films portray a character that embodies the image of a hero, Prince Hector and King Leonidas and Anit-hero/villains who are greedy and inspired by wealth, fame, and or power, Achilles and Xerxes. The theme of Heroism in 300 and Troy are similar because they both exhibit a common philosophy of Immortalization of oneself vs the protection of ones homeland and people. The latter is viewed more highly because their heroic action are for the betterment of themselves and other people but goal of the former is selfish and self-centered which is seen as immoral and is often frowned upon. Whether or not any of these characters are heroes is debatable but fact remains that they all possess characteristics of a hero in addition to the same idea of “All for One” vs “One for All”.
