...Analyze 20th century quests for religious, racial, and gender equality. How did they influence artistic works of the time? The influence of artistic work was a great one in the 50’s-80’s time period. With the equality of women being able to vote, and the rights of African-Americans being able to vote, sit with white people and attend the same schools as white people this gave artist of the time a chance to be bold in every way they could be. To me art is not just paintings and sculptures but it also music and movies. Rock-n-roll was a big hit in the 50’s thanks to Elvis Presley whom to me is the greatest musical artist of all times. If it were not for him and his music then there would be no type of rock-n-roll type music. The Beatles would probably not exist nor any other rock group. If movie stars like Marilyn Monroe did not exist then there would no sex symbol for women to idolize like Anna Nicole Smith did and become famous. Without Jim and Tammy Bakker the Christian religion would not have been televised and a way for other religions to be televised and come out in the open for the world to experience. Andy Warhol experimented with film and brought out the most postmodern types of film in history. Throughout the century religious, racial and gender equality was the biggest influence in time. Come the mid 90’s time changed and people were no longer influenced by what was going on in this time period instead they just redo something and call it art. Musicians take music and...

...We have studied many different aspects and artists of Rock and Roll this semester in MMC 1702; however, the part that I found by far the most interesting is the material on Elvis Presley. More than two decades after his passing, the presence of Elvis is as prominent in our society as if he were still alive. He is known only by his first name, and that name is quoted in numerous references in today’s world (“bigger than Elvis!” etc). Elvis’ impact reaches far, far beyond his music. This is a fact that differentiates him from so many of the other notable artists in history. However, his music alone has had a great personal impact on me, and at the time of its release, changed the industry more than anyone had ever seen. He single-handedly popularized rock and roll by blending white country music with black rhythm and blues. He made his music fun to listen to and acceptable to listen to by everybody, no matter what race you were. After studying this, I’ve realized how much Elvis has changed my life. The “creation” of rock and roll has had an impact on so many artists in every single genre. Music has always been a big part of my life, and I enjoy tastes in country, rhythm and blues, and rock (in today’s usage of the terms). Furthermore, the creation of rock and roll among other things has helped spurred on the development of an international pop culture. This pop culture, through magazines, newspapers, television, and other forms of media has shaped the youth of America...

...Week 1 assignment Question: 2. Radio plays a central role in the discussions in this chapter. How does it affect each of the three styles under consideration? What role does TV play? Answer: For the style of rhythm and blues: In the 1950s, a new approach to radio disseminated rhythm and blues outside of regional black communities. In 1948, WDIA in Memphis began programming and advertising especially to the local black population, playing rhythm and blues records supported by a roster of sponsors. For the style of country and western: As far back the 1930s, mainstream pop played to a national audience, while country and western was most limited to regional radio exposure. Within a few years, local and regional radio stations across the nation were programming country music, especially WSM in Nashville and WLS in Chicago WSM broadcast the popular country-oriented program the Grand Ole Opry, while WLS produced the National Barndance. For the style of mainstream pop: NBC went coast-to-coast with its national radio network in 1928, which was an important step in blurring the regional boundaries of popular culture. Because of this, some pop styles became national, while others kept their regional identities. This can be attributed to network programming: the mainstream pop was heard frequently on network radio. By the early 1950s, the national audience for popular music had largely shifted from radio to television. This meant that radio...

...you who think Elvis is a cultural icon because of his ways of persuading his audience, are correct. In fact, I want to argue that he’s a champion cultural icon, the King of Rock and Roll, the Eternal Great. There are many reasons why this is true and I will lay these out in this paper. Elvis Presley is in fact, the ultimate cultural icon. He will never be replaced by anyone for many reasons. Thus, in this paper, I will argue that Elvis Presley is the ultimate cultural icon. For example, Elvis Presley and The Beatles represent the two poles of pop music superstardom. “On one side is the patriotic American truck driver with a voice that conquered the world over a two-decade career, and on the other hand, there are the four sharp-tongued Liverpudlians who came and went with the 60’s” (Webb). Former Beatle, John Lennon, once said, “Before Elvis, there was nothing” (Elvis Presley Quotes). “The question is, why Elvis? Why is Elvis—more so than Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., and J.F.K.—consistently held up as an ‘icon of the twentieth century’” (Doss 2)? The reason Elvis is an icon is because he made an everlasting impression during his time. He was revolutionary. He influenced the teenage culture of the fifties and his music has shaped the styles of many recent artists. Musician Rod Stewart said, “Elvis was the king. No doubt about it. People like myself, Mick Jagger and all the others only followed in his footsteps” (Elvis Presley Quotes). Presley still has admirers...

...have an enormous audience, which was never before possible. This allowed for single artists, like Jimmie Rogers and Bill Monroe, to become well known and produce iconic tracks that would be recorded as the traditional music of America. The lyrics that were used during this early America by these European migrating immigrants where about stories of freedom, life, and a search for identity. This became a significant part of the culture of the developing American people, who used this new form of media to identify themselves (historically and culturally). Since then, Anglo-American folk music has been identified as a strong source of inspiration from well known artists throughout history, such as Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, and Hank Williams, just to name a few ("Introduction to Anglo-American Folk Music”). Today, though international country singers, traditional Anglo-American folk music can be...

...Spencer Harrell (10429069) Dr. Jaime Lynn Harker English 224 2 December 2013 Sherman Alexie’s Reservation Blues is centered around Indians living on a reservation that decide to start a rock band to try and preserve what culture may be left of their Spokane tribe. One of the main reasons rock music has any significance in Reservation Blues is that it used to bring a group of men together to perform and further bring together the Indians living on the reservation. With the introduction of Robert Johnson, one of the most famous African-American blues artist, Sherman Alexie recognizes the similarities between the Native-Americans living on the reservation and African-Americans. Both of these groups of people went through many struggles and Alexie was tying them together through the use of music. “Thomas looked around at the little country he was trying to save. This reservation hidden away in the corner of the world… He held that cracked guitar tenderly, strummed the first chord, and sang that Patsy Cline song about falling to pieces.” In this portion from the novel Thomas Builds a Fire expresses the notion that he is trying to save the reservation through the use of music. Patsy Cline’s name shows up here along with many other popular music artists throughout the book. Sherman Alexie uses these artists names so that readers will understand and draw lines to the comparisons he makes throughout the novel. These music artists are also used to show that the Indians living...

...Elvis Presley once said, “You only pass through this life once, you don’t come back for an encore.” This quote definitely applied to him, as he strived to make the best of all the negative situations he experienced. Throughout his life, Elvis became an actor, singer, husband, and father. He was most known for his music and controversial dance moves. Although Elvis only lived to be 42, I feel that he accomplished many great things. Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8th, 1935 to Vernon and Gladys Presley. ...Everyone has looked at a celebrity they look up to and wished they could be more like them. I myself, have done this on countless occasions with country music singer/songwriter Miranda Lambert. Although, just because she is famous that does not mean that Miranda Lambert is much different from myself. Miranda Lambert and I both love music. We both love country music and have a soft spot for old school country music, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, among many other legends. According to About Entertainment Miranda Lambert in addition to her father, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Garth Brooks, Loretta Lynn, Reba, and many others were her musical inspirations growing up. Although, as much as Miranda and I both love country music, we also enjoy other genres of music such as Rock ‘N Roll, R&B, and Alternative. Lambert and I both look up to strong female singers, for example, Reba and Loretta Lynn. Miranda stated in an interview with Taste Of Country that “she looks up to ‘Loretta Lynn, 100 percent. She’s a living legend. One of the reasons any female artist has a career today in country music is because of her, and she’s still making great records. I’m having a blast. But I want to be like her and make records 50 years from now.’” I enjoy singing my heart out in my car, where no one can hear me, for this everyone probably would thank me for (I am tone deaf). Unlike myself Miranda Lambert actually has musical talent, she can not only sing, but she can also...
