...2. What psychological impact does workers’ compensation have on injured workers? What accounts for these impacts? Workers can experience many emotions when going through the WCB system. Fear, anxiety, depression, and shame can compound to have a lasting psychological impact on the injured worker. These stresses can be put upon the employee by disability caseworkers, employers, health care professionals, friends and colleagues; yet all are a result of the attitudes that the WCB system has perpetuated. The actual process of submitting a claim and going through the steps as outlined by the WCB can lead to a myriad of emotions. First- will my claim be approved or denied? The fear of claim denial can lead to other thoughts such as how will I pay my bills, and how will I find the money to get the treatment I need? This fear is perhaps founded on the WCB’s reputation for denying claims or providing less than adequate financial support. If the claim is accepted, workers can feel fear with the process. Fear or uncertainty of the unknown can lead to worries about if the treatments prescribed by the WCB will be appropriate or painful or dangerous (Lippel, 2007). Employees can look towards the future with worries such as what will my abilities be after the injury, what if I develop a new injury after I return to work, and what will my employer think of me (Lippel, 2007). These worries can stem from the lack of information about the WCB process or caseworkers that are not pro-active...

...The Psychological Impact of Endangerment in Institutions The feeling of insecurity due to perceptions of endangerment in establishments like the Citadel has a range of effects on social cohesion. In the Citadel, an all boys military college, a social hierarchy exists that places the students into a particular rank. During the late twentieth century, feminists, or those who advocate equal rights and opportunities for women, started to gain recognition; One of these activists is Susan Faludi, who wrote for prestigious newspapers such as The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, became a national spokesperson for women’s right after appearing on the cover of Time magazine alongside Gloria Steinem (Faludi 72). Faludi, author of “The Naked Citadel”, sought to change the old-fashioned, man dominated society through her writing on pressing issues of gender and equality by going straight into the action with a first-person account on the the culture of the Citadel. In her report, it can be seen that the fight is not simply between those who are for admitting women and those who are against it, it is also an internal battle between the boys. Perceptions of being endangered may have a positive effect on unity in such institutions by creating common goals for them to achieve, to keep girls out and to fight against the disturbance of well-established and cherished traditions, but some customs, such as hazing may make students uncomfortable and anxious, may create a barrier against...

...Psychological impacts of Japan earthquake could linger for years The Japanese are beginning to pick up the pieces after Friday's earthquake -- but it could take much longer for their society to heal Alexandra Pope, staff writer March 13, 2011 — As victims of Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami begin the long process of picking up the pieces, an expert on the country's culture and society says the psychological impacts of the disaster could be felt for generations. It could be years before the full extent of the earthquake's impacts are known The physical aftershocks of Friday's deadly magnitude 8.9 earthquake and subsequent tsunami could continue to rattle northern Japan for months. But according to Dr. Mark Watson, an assistant professor in the department of sociology and anthropology at Concordia University in Montreal, the psychological impacts of the disaster could be felt for even longer. Watson, who has spent the past decade studying social and cultural issues in Japan, says earthquakes are part of life for the Japanese, but the sheer scale of this disaster will make it difficult to overcome. “This is a once in a thousand-year event, and the devastation that’s been seen in north Japan is absolutely horrific,” he says. “How people will cope with it is an interesting question, especially given that in the 20th century they had two major earthquakes.” After both the 1923 earthquake in Tokyo and the 1995 earthquake in Kobe, Japan proved its resilience...

...Understanding Attitudes, Stigma and Counseling Methods associated with Abortions Marsha Escayg Medgar Evers College The abortion rates in the United States is higher than that in most other developed countries. Although this fact alone requires attention, looking deeper reveals additional areas of concern. According to Greene this research is based on the different confinements on abortion that have been forced under the falsification that women may be ignorant, undecided or pressured as to their choice to end a pregnancy. Of all the health decisions women make in their lifetimes, their choice to end a pregnancy is among the most individual and socially challenged. What this article does is address the gap in knowledge by describing the counseling tools and practices at one large abortion clinic in the US. It examines how confidence in decisions making varies by demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of women and pregnancy-related attributes. Furthermore it reviews women’s responses to questions aimed at identifying those with specific beliefs about spirituality or abortion. Overall what was found was that upon arrival to the clinic women had high pre-counseling confidence in their decision to terminate their pregnancy. Abortion policies concentrates on prerequisites, for example, waiting periods, state-mandated information and parental association. These laws are focused around the premise that women are unaware of the nature of the abortion and the dangers included...

...In a organization psychological contract is a essential part of positive employee relationship. It requires interaction & communication between employer & employee. Basically psychological contract is the`mutual beliefs, perceptions and informal obligations between an employer and employee (D.Rousseau,1989). It can be distinguished from the legal employment contract. It is the perception of both employee and employer, of what are their mutual obligations towards each others. It can be more influential than the formal written contract in affecting how employees behave from day to day, their motivations and their commitment to the organization. Levinson (1962), the father of the concept of psychological contract defined it as an unwritten contract. According to his concept psychological contract is the sum of the mutual expectations between the organization and employees. Psychological contracts are mental models or schemas that develop through an individual’s interactions and experiences (Levinson, 1962) The psychological contract is playing an increasingly important role in helping to define and understand contemporary employment relationship (Millward & Brewerton, 1999). The psychological contract tells employees what they are required to do in order to meet their side of the bargain and what they can expect from their job. It offers a valid and helpful framework of thinking about the employment relationship, especially against a background of a changing labour market and...

...The Physical and Psychological Impact of Breastfeeding on Mothers and Infants Although breastfeeding is older than civilization itself, it is very much a delicate topic in this country. We often hear magazines, news anchors, medical professionals, and all kinds of people comment on how much better breastfeeding is for an infant’s immune system, but these same people turn around and run breastfeeding through the gauntlet of public opinion and societal norms. It is common for mothers who bottle feed to be shamed while mothers who breastfeed are shamed for when and how they choose to do it (Jansen and de Worth, 2008). Such a normal, necessary thing, but our society is still fiercely debating about appropriateness of public breastfeeding, the superiority of it compared to bottle feeding and the tangible, provable impacts of it on child development. The way our society views breastfeeding is directly reflective of the psychology of America and often factors into whether a woman decides to breastfeed. Unfortunately, this psychology also results in ignorance about the true, full scope of breastfeeding benefits and how those benefits extend beyond just improved immune systems for the infants and accelerated loss of baby weight for the moms. Breastfeeding has a broad impact on the physical and mental/emotional development of both babies and nursing mothers. The impact of breastfeeding on physical development covers a wide range of effects, with the ...

Price, Nir Goldman, Mark A. Sephton & Mark J. Burchell http://phys.org/news/2013-09-scientists-cosmic-factory-blocks-life.html In the article it states that when icy comets collide into a planet, amino acids are created. These are the building blocks of life and from the amino acids. This means that amino acids can be created anywhere in the world with these conditions. The article also states that a couple of moons of Saturn have the perfect environment for creating amino acids if a comet hits them. The researchers stated that the comets crash into the ground, which create shockwaves that create amino acids. The scientists figured this out by using a special gun that replicates the crash of a comet. This article is related to science/biology because it helps us understand how life first formed on Earth. I think this discovery will benefit everyone around the world equally because a common question usually asked is how the world was created in a scientific sense. Scientists will be very happy with this information because it would help them keep researching for ideas to satisfy peoples questions related to this topic. Sep. 15, 2013 — Scientists have discovered a 'cosmic factory' for producing the building blocks of life, amino acids, in research published today in the journal Nature Geoscience...

...“What does impact mean to you?” My entrepreneurship professor asked us to define the term in a way that related to our personal goals. A few examples of impact that immediately popped into my head included Embrace Innovation, whose low-cost incubator saved 300,000 babies across 22 countries and Doug Rouch’s Daily Table, which sells fresh, low-cost produce to some of the 49 million Americans struggling with hunger. How did their journeys relate to my aspiring career in dentistry? I recalled shadowing Dr. Starns & Wood who volunteered tirelessly on Tuesday nights, spreading their impact on Charlottesville beyond private practice. Considering social entrepreneurship and dentistry, I defined impact as transforming as many lives possible across multiple...

...On February 15, 2013 the small asteroid 2012 DA14 was its closest to Earth. The 50 meter asteroid passed through the gap between Earth and the ring of geosynchronous satellites that orbit earth. Geosynchronous objects orbit around the earth with a period equal to one sidereal day. Asteroid 2012 DA14 passed at about 17,200 miles above the Earth’s surface. The asteroid was discovered in February 2012 by astronomers at the LaSagra observatory in southern Spain. (http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news177.html)( http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news174.html) (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/geosynchronous) An asteroid is a small planet-like body in orbit around the sun. The orbits of some asteroids take them across the paths of the planets. Asteroids are smaller than a planet but larger than a meteoroid, which is a small interplanetary object also in orbit around the Sun. If a portion of a meteoroid or other object survives the entry through the Earth’s atmosphere and reaches the Earth’s surface it is referred to as a meteorite. A meteor, also known as a shooting star, is a streak of light produced by a meteoroid that burns away in the Earth’s atmosphere. When their orbit brings them close to the sun, gigantic balls of ice and rock or comets, form a tail of dust and gas while being heated by the Sun’s rays. Scientists believe that the extinction of dinosaurs, nearly 66 million years ago, was the result of a large meteorite striking what today is Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. In...

...more at ease knowing that like that night, it wasn’t about the numbers involved so much as it was about the message being conveyed. Renate’s story is one that cannot be over looked. To hear first hand, and even second hand is so much more impacting then reading about something in books and through articles. As much as Renate impacted me, she was only a small part of the commemoration. Everything came together and flowed very nicely and I found myself more than willing to stay longer then required. My favorite part was the passion shown by everyone involved. Although I didn’t necessarily understand some of the songs and prayers, it was still powerful to say the least. One thing I will always remember, and the thing that made the biggest impact on me was an elderly man who stood next to me towards the end. This man walked in late and although he never spoke to anyone, he sang and participated, eyes closed, with such an intense facial expression of both passion and remorse. As he walked out in silence, still not speaking to anyone, is when I realized just how much this really meant to people. One of my favorite messages from the Candlelight read along given out was the idea that action is what separates belief from opinions and how beliefs are imprinted through actions. This...
