We ask ourselves these questions everyday like: What are Germs and why does one become ill? Do viruses play a part or do Poor lifestyle choices play a large role?
The Multi-factorial Model explains this; there are many reasons that an individual’s health may suffer. One’s environment, biology, socioeconomic status, sources of stress, and even personality all help to determine if someone will fall ill. Physicians and mental health professionals, as well as their patients, can benefit from this information. When an individual knows what is causing his or her health problems, he or she is better prepared to take steps to cure or prevent these problems. Maybe, like the old wives tale, it is believed that being outside with a wet head caused that persistent cold? Most of the listed reasons do play a role in whether or not an individual will become ill, but there are others issues that are contributed as well.
One of the causes of health problems in individuals is environmental factors. How does one’s environment makes him or her sick? Consideration must be given to an individual’s environment. Is there clean drinking water available? Can an individual venture outside without fear of what toxic chemicals may be taken the human body when breathing the air? Some people worry about illness with every drink of water and breathe of air they take in. The World Health Organization (2008) stated that “Thirteen million deaths annually are due to preventable environmental causes. Preventing environmental risk could save as many as four million lives a year, in children alone”.
This is an overwhelming statistic that proves environmental issues can and do affect our health. Gender can also play a role and affect an individual’s health such as men and women are susceptible to different diseases and sicknesses. For example, most everyone knows that a man cannot be affected by premenstrual syndrome but most are not aware that being male can lead to a shorter life. According to the Mayo Clinic (2008), the life expectancy of a man is five and three tenths of a year shorter than a woman’s. Knowing that one is more susceptible to a disease or illness due to his or her heredity should not be a reason to be cautious of preventative measures.
Knowledge of genetic predisposition should be a motivation to make healthy changes in one’s life as well as an individual’s behavior is another one of the many factors that determines health. With a proper diet, one can reduce his or her chances of developing certain diseases and conditions (so they say but nothing is a guarantee in becoming sick) such as hypertension and high cholesterol. Staying active is another preventative measure. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) provides the following statistics: In 2000, the most common actual causes of death in the United States were tobacco (435,000), poor diet and physical inactivity (400,000), alcohol consumption (85,000), microbial agents (e.g. influenza and pneumonia,75,000), toxic agents (e.g. pollutants, asbestos, etc. 55,000), motor vehicle accidents (43,000), firearms (29,000), sexual behavior (20,000) and illicit use of drugs (17,000). (Center for Disease Control, 2008, par.1) As one can see by these statistics alone, one’s personal choices and behaviors can affect his or health greatly. A physician can use his or her knowledge and information from his or her patient to suggest behavioral changes that can help to shorten the duration of the patient’s illness.
Along with biological and environmental factors, socioeconomic status, stressors, and an individual’s behaviors factor into his or her health as well. Prolonged stress can cause the immune system to slow down, increasing an individual’s chances of contracting even minor illnesses. When an individual knows that he or she is stressed and seeks information to help reduce that stress or discover a better way to handle it, they have made a choice to seek help in having a behavior that helps to reduce some illnesses.
Can psychology cure an illness or disease; not likely; but knowing about psychology and the Multi-factorial Model can make a disease, illness, or the condition more manageable. This can be possible when an individual knows that there are many reasons that he or she becomes ill, therefore they are able to take steps to subdue some of the systems or avoid them. For example, headache sufferers and women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome (PMS); psychology can help these individuals with these symptoms? There are a few types of headaches: muscle-tension, migraine, and cluster are some of the most common. When treating a headache, especially a tension headache, one needs to understand what could have brought on the headache? To determine the cause can help to avoid another one in the future.
There has been an increase in stress in the world today due to their jobs, the economy and just everyday activities. For example do we take time in our day to relax our muscles throughout the workday? The National Pain Foundation (2008) recognizes that psychology plays a role in treatment as evident by their statement, “approaching this condition from many angles — physically, psychologically and environmentally — is critical to effectively managing headaches”.
Psychology has helped to understand that headaches can develop due to factors that are easily controlled by the individual. Developing an effective stress-management plan can help to manage these bothersome headaches. The role that psychology has played in diagnosing PMS has made women aware of reasons they may suffer from worse symptoms than others.
Most women would agree that PMS exists and it is not just an invented condition to allow a woman a few days of excused illnesses. Some women, however, believe that PMS is a life threatening condition that disrupts their lives every month. Psychology has shown that there are instances of self-policing practices and some women have such negative thoughts about PMS and themselves that their conditions seem worse than other women’s. Medical News Today (2008) states that “It can also allow women to develop more empowering strategies for reducing or preventing premenstrual distress, and to develop an ethic of care for the self, no longer blaming the body for premenstrual anger or depression, rather, looking to life stresses, ways of coping, and relationship issues”.
Psychologically, women can bring on these more extreme cases of PMS. It is important for women to recognize PMS as a natural function in the human body.
The Multi-factorial Model is an important theory in both psychology and medicine.
Physicians and mental health professionals need to educate their patients on all aspects of their diseases, conditions, and illnesses. Making an individual aware of all areas of treatment helps to assure that a patient will be able to gain relief from his or her pain.
Overall, Psychology cannot cure a disease, but basic psychological knowledge can help to manage a disease, condition, illness to be able to manage the systems or be proactive.
