This week in clinical, I met SON’s competency 2.8 identifies health related concerns of a patient and/or family. I had a 58 yr old female patient that had a splenic abscess and a bacterial infection. As a result of her bacterial infection, a PICC line was inserted and the plan of care is to treat the infection with antibiotics for 6 weeks and surgery will follow for the abscess. I identified and addressed my patients concern by explaining to her that because she had a PICC line inserted I could remove her peripheral IV’s. I removed her IV under the guidance of my clinical instructor and also met SON’s competency 2.6 assesses the patient’s physiological response to illness and to the treatment plan.
