Gordon B. Hinckley, an American religious leader, once said, “You can't build a great building on a weak foundation. You must have a solid foundation if you're going to have a strong superstructure.” The exact same stays true for education; it’s basically impossible to pass college if one never went to school when they were younger, such as in elementary or middle school. However, in North Carolina, the precise opposite seems to be occurring: although the state has many grand colleges, such as Duke University and the University of North Carolina, the public grade schools have been taking an absolute beating from the NC government for nearly half a decade now. It bring up the question: why did the NC state government all of a sudden start pummeling public education? …show more content…
In fiscal year 2011-2012, North Carolina ended up with a deficit of 3.7 billion dollars, which, proportionate to the state’s budget of $21 billion, was one of the worst offenders in the country; in fact, it was bad enough that voters elected a veto-proof GOP (Republican) supermajority in a landslide election to the state legislature, because the GOP advocated budgets cuts to decrease the deficit. As to why the GOP targeted public education, they actually had a good reason: public education took up nearly 30% of the budget at the time, and besides, apart from Health and Human Services, which occupied about 37.5% of the budget at the time, all of the other expenditures were negligible in size, with the next largest being sub-10% of the total budget at the time. So, it was logical to slash public education first - it, as well as HHS, were the two largest available targets for budget cuts, so the new Republican supermajority struck - and they struck hard. The state legislature attacked public education on many fronts, including slashing funding for public education,

Free public education has had a fantastic effect on general education because it allows any person to become educated with very little to no money spent on their part. This helps those who are financially challenged to break the vicious cycle of poverty and become educated and financially stable. Free public education has revolutionized society and allowed for the social caste system to be degraded and for people who would have grown up to be peasants and serfs to become billionaires, CEOs,...

Gdp Growth in Latin America

...Research project: The relationship between: the annual growth rate of GDP per capita and the public expenditure in Latin America. F29 F33 F43 O19 My goal for this research project is to examine the relationships that exists in between the annual growth rate per capita and public expenditure in Latin America. What I wanted to see is if a higher growth rate of GDP meant that a higher percentage was spent in the public sector. Data was gathered from the ECLAC, The World Bank and also the International Monetary Fund. Introduction The reason I was very attracted in this research is because as someone born in South America and lately Latin America has been doing better than before, and visiting South America the past year I have seen how infrastructure has improved lately so I was very interested in seeing how big of a role public expenditure plays in countries that are developing. Expenditure on welfare, health and education are an essential part of what governments do to enhance the quality of life of their citizens and the human capital base of their societies. My focus on public and social expenditure in Latin America is mainly guided by the concern of how Governments utilizes existing policies and seeing how these theories and policies have helped increase Latin America’s GDP. In Latin America we find a great variation in social policy regimes; ranging from Uruguay and Argentina, where a large majority of the population is covered by social policy and has decent...

...collaborating to provide policies, directive, knowledge, and funds to protect these 10 NCIs, as a disruption to them will have a severe impact on national security. However, the education sector is not listed as an NCI, which leaves education sector and significant portion of Canadians under protected. This paper introduces the research and provides a discussion on the contextual background of the research concerns and problem statement. It will identify the research problem and supporting research questions, and conclude with a list of recommendation. Contextual Background Critical Infrastructure (CI) is the lifeblood of Canada, and the high availability, reliability, integrity and confidentiality of the CI is paramount in maintaining the sovereignty, national security, and economic health and wellbeing of the Canadian society. The education sector should be created as a separate NCI because recent reports and studies emphasize that education must be a national security matter (Council on Foreign Relations, 2012). Hence, the failure of education sector can pose significant threats to national security and economic growth. Problem Statement According to Statistics Canada, there are approximately 15,500 schools (elementary and secondary), 163 public and private universities, and 183 recognized public colleges and institutes. Provinces and territories reported that there were 6.5 million students enrolled in educational institutes and 610,000 instructors (Statistics Canada,...

Homeschooling

...choices of education. Amanda Shaffran Communication 220 Terri Shurtleff October 31, 2010 During his first major speech on education, President Obama said, “The future belongs to the nation that best educates its citizens” (Aasen, 2010, p.4). Education makes most people think of public schools and the structure of schools. The complaints of public schools or “traditional” schools are under- funded, overcrowded, unchallenging curriculum, and student peer pressure. Traditional schools also work in a fixed time slots and do not leave enough time for parents and children to have enough time together. Along with traditional schools being in a fix time, the curriculum is in set times, therefore, parents have turn to alternative education. Fixing the problems of educating children, the place of education is somewhere to start. For example, private schools that can be expensive with cost being around $400 per child, charter schools that basic curriculum is in the form of public schools but under no guidelines and accountability to the state, or homeschooling that has been taught for centuries in an environment based on student success. Homeschooling provides a better education than traditional school, through year-round education, one-on-one...
